The meaning of life is here and it goes something like this: find a girl/guy, settle down, and forge out a solid career.
Apparently, this will make you happy.
Well, maybe the first part is right but, for lots of us, the second part is BS. Let’s face it – there is nothing worse than working from nine until five in an office. The idea of it makes some people’s skin crawl.
Are you one of these men or women? Is a traditional job not up your street? Only you know, but there are signs regardless and you can find them below.
You’re Always Tense
You’ve tried working in an office environment, and you hated every single minute. It wasn’t necessarily the people or the job but the feeling of anxiety.
It’s as if you were an animal in cage that was desperate to get out and roam the wilds of the industry. Of course, you’re no caged beast but it still felt like that and it’s no fun.
There is nothing worse than being tense and stressed out by an office job because there is nothing you can do to change how you feel.
So, you may as well avoid the inevitable in the first place and avoid being cooped up.
Every resume contains the term “flexible” yet it’s a lie. Sure, they are bendy in a corporate sense but not in the true sense of the word.
You love to take opportunities as soon as they pop up and won’t apologize.
Sometimes, this means following your career dreams and other times it means having lunch with friends on a Wednesday afternoon.
A traditional employee will freak if an employee asks to break the regimented chain, which is why a 9 to 5 isn’t for you. You need shift patterns that allow you to chop and change at a whim.
The reality of the situation is that an office job is admin-based.
Regardless of the sector, you’ll spend more time in the workplace pushing paper and pens than getting into the thick of things. Some people find this exhilarating yet you don’t agree.
You want something where you can be on the front line. Rather than raising awareness for the planet, you’d rather search for careers or jobs in the agriculture field where you make a real difference. There isn’t the same thrill when you’re stuck behind a desk staring at a computer.
You Hate Being Told What To Do
And someone, somewhere in an office will bark out orders.
Sometimes, it’s a colleague who has ideas above their station, which sucks. But, even when it’s the Big Cheese, the order sticks in your craw.
This is probably the best sign you’re not a 9 to 5 person because it means you want to be the boss. You need to be in charge, telling people what to do rather than the other way around.
Are any of these alarm bells ringing in your head right now? If so, how do you plan on making a change?
