Most people don’t know what options there are, but being in the know will allow you to respond accordingly to what you may face in the courtroom. This article will fill you in on what you need to be prepared to expect. Keep reading to find out more.

The Different Types of Child Custody: Sole Custody

One of the first types of custody, and the simplest to understand, is sole custody. As the name basically implies, sole custody is when only one parent gains custody of the child.

This is usually only rewarded to the sole parent if the other former spouse has been accused of and proven to have been an abusive or absent parent, or is otherwise not competent enough to aid in the raising of the child.

Joint Custody

Another common court arrangement, joint custody allows for both former spouses to raise their child. The child would split their time between the two parents’ living quarters until they are old enough to move out and be on their own.

Unlike with sole custody, both parents would have to be sound of mind and be in a financial state where they can safely and proficiently take care of their child’s needs.

Legal Custody

We could consider legal custody to be a more customizable form of custody. With legal custody, each parent gets to make long-term decisions about how their child will be raised.

Everything from where the child will reside, to how long they will be at each location to who they will be with, and even who else will help raise them outside of the parents can all be determined under this type of custody.

Of course, after you reach a custody agreement, there’s still more that you need to handle to tie up loose ends. Make sure to find out more about dealing with matters such as caring for your child after the agreement, dealing with divorce, and other matters.
