How to Choose a New Sofa

Sofas are essential items to have in any home. They provide a comfortable place to sit when you’re watching a movie, reading a book, or just having a nice catch-up with your friends and family. Your sofas do go through a lot with so many people lounging on them day after day, or perhaps there are children in your home who love to jump on them when they’re feeling mischievous, or they like using the cushions to build a fort? With all of that traffic that your sofa sees, eventually, it will need replacing.

If it’s time for you to get a new sofa, here are some things to remember when you go shopping:

Style

You want your new sofa to fit in with the rest of your living room’s décor, so you should pay attention to the style of the sofas you’re looking at. For vintage-inspired living spaces, leather sofas like chesterfields are always an ideal fit, or something like a chaise longue might be a better fit? L-shaped corner sofas are also very popular choices, particularly for modern designs.

These are great because they can provide more seating, so if you do have a bigger family or like to host guests regularly, these could be the best choice for you.

Comfort

While making sure your new sofa suits your style, the more important consideration is that they are comfortable to sit on.

There are various chic designs when it comes to sofas, but not all of them are the most comfortable or supportive seats. These kinds of chairs might be OK in an office reception area, for example, but they aren’t suitable for a home environment where comfort is key. This is why it’s better to go in-store when shopping for sofas, so you can test them out before you make a purchase.

Size

Another thing you need to consider is whether or not the sofas that you’re interested in will even fit in your living room.

A modular sofa can suit both large and smaller living spaces, as they can allow you to create different seating options with each section so you can fit this into your space. However, always make sure you are taking measurements with you when viewing sofas, as they can look bigger or smaller when on display in a big showroom, so it’s hard to tell whether or not they will work in your space at home.

Maintenance

All sofas will require you to make some level of care to keep them in good shape, but some designs can be more demanding than others. If you’re someone who doesn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to sofa maintenance, pick one that requires minimal effort. You can also purchase throw rugs to put over your sofas to protect them from spills and stains.

Quality

You might not have a big budget to work with but make sure that you are choosing quality over price.

This will be much more cost-effective in the long term anyway, as buying a poor-quality sofa will only mean discomfort and it falling apart sooner rather than later. If you are trying to stick to a tight budget, consider shopping second-hand as this is a great way to get top-quality at reduced prices.

If it’s time to replace your worn-out sofa with a new one, remember these tips for when you come to choose it.
