7 Tips To Help Start A Podcast In 2021

Edison Research put out a new study in early 2019. It found that 22% of respondents had watched a podcast in the past week. In fact, the “Share of Ear” for podcasts has risen 122% since 2014.

The other thing that has risen is the ability to make a successful career as a host. If you’re thinking of launching a podcast in 2021, here are some of my best podcasting tips.

7 Tips for How to Start a Successful Podcast

1. Develop a Concept

Want to know how to start a successful podcast? Develop a concept. Talking about random subjects won’t attract much of a following.

Answer some questions:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • What is your background or expertise?
  • What new perspective can you offer?

If your expertise is gaming, talk about that. Love romance novels? Same thing. Maybe you want to educate people about politics or social issues. There’s really no wrong answer, however, you must choose something.

2. Choose a Format

In order to start up a podcast, you’ll need to determine what kind of show you want to do. Here are some options:

  • Solo show
  • Co-hosted show
  • Interview show
  • Roundtable discussions
  • Documentary
  • Docu-Drama

Knowing the format will help you develop the theme of your podcast.

3. Determine Your Target Audience

Just like you need a subject, you also need to define your target audience. Be specific. A broad category will make it difficult to market your podcast.

Here are things to determine:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Marital status
  • Parental status
  • Location
  • Education level
  • Profession
  • Income level
  • Interests & hobbies
  • Political affiliation

Forbes offers some great tips for how to identify your target audience.

4. Come Up With a Great Name

The name of your podcast is part of your brand. It should say exactly who you are and what your show is about. If your podcast is going to be a humorous look at events in the news, you’d better have a funny title.

Note: Unless you’re already famous, it’s probably not a good idea to use your name.

5. Develop Your Artwork

You’ll need beautiful artwork. You want to look like a serious professional and bad artwork will sink your chances at the outset.

6. Buy the Right Equipment

You will need recording equipment for your podcast, including:

  • Microphone
  • Pop filter
  • Recording device
  • Computer (or smart device)
  • Recording/editing software
  • Call recording software (if you intend to interview guests remotely)
  • Headphones
  • USB cable

This basic list will get you started. Some businesses and individuals also hire podcast production services. They help you with audio production and editing so you can focus on more important things like show promotion.

7. Decide on a Media Host

There are actually many steps before you get to this stage, but it’s something you’ll need to determine. You’ll need a podcast hosting account or media host. The platform will allow you to store audio files so people can actually listen, download, and subscribe to your podcast.
