Remote Love: is Such a Relationship Possible and How to Save It

Long-distance relationships are a real test for couples and few people believe in them. And nothing is surprising in this: what can you expect from a relationship in which partners do not see each other for months, get used to living separately, suffer from a lack of physical intimacy with a loved one, can give in to anxious thoughts and even begin to doubt their chosen one?

It is very difficult to maintain a long-distance relationship – this is a fact. However, this does not mean that you need to give up.

How to maintain a long-distance relationship

A relationship in which both partners are psychologically mature, self-sufficient, and self-confident people who are aware of their value, take care of their personal space, live a busy life outside the relationship, and know where to direct energy and attention when they cannot be fully realized in a relationship will remain.

Make each other pleasant surprises and give things-reminders about yourself

For example, before the departure of a partner, you can hide some kind of reminder about yourself in the luggage. You can buy something and send it by mail, or take a picture of the thing and send it with the comment “it is waiting for you when you get back”.

Sending basket flower arrangements is also a good idea. We need something tangible that will help lovers to remember their physical presence in each other’s lives. It is not a problem to order delivery of flowers even in other locations as online flower delivery is available from anywhere. Pleasant little things in the form of letters, parcels, flowers, and long heart-to-heart conversations via video link will add warmth and pleasant emotions to the relationship.

Use the time apart to your advantage

Make a plan of what you will do in your free time, and what you will focus on while your partner is not around. Focus on self-development (for example, if you have always wanted to start a course in floristics, it is the best time) and improve your relationship with yourself.

Set a schedule of communication with a partner

You must communicate regularly so that other cases and circumstances do not claim your time. It is better to schedule calls or online communication at the same time. Such a schedule will create a sense of security and minimize the anxiety that invariably arises in long-distance relationships.

Try to meet in real life

After about half a year, people find it difficult to accept separation and begin to flee. As a result, if such an option exists, you should plan at least a romantic weekend. You need to schedule some activities to keep them intriguing and eventful, but don’t overdo it and leave days for spontaneity and time to just relax with each other.

Use video communication

Seeing each other is very important, so try to call each other regularly via video. It is not necessary to sit in front of a laptop for hours every day and have long conversations. You can just do your own business, periodically exchanging phrases. During this time, it will appear as if the loved one is physically present in the room.

Share your thoughts, form common goals

If it is impossible to maintain a physical connection, you can strengthen emotional, intellectual, and spiritual – share interesting materials, articles, and what you have seen and read. You can even tell each other about everyday details and form common goals. You can read a book together, or watch a movie. This will create a feeling that you are together, busy with the same thing, and supporting each other – a very important feeling when communicating at a distance.

Remember that the main thing is honesty

Without honesty, the relationship will not last long. Being apart is already hard enough, and unspoken insults will only make the situation worse.

Remember that the experience of long-distance relationships may well not only weaken but also strengthen the connection between people. It is when you are at a distance that you will be able to appreciate every minute of communication with your partner more, be more attentive to each other’s thoughts, and build a stronger emotional and mental connection.
