Emerson Sensi Thermostat Review – Best One for Your Buck?

Looking for an honest Emerson Sensi Thermostat Review?

In my Sensi Thermostat review, I’m going to walk you through what this is. How to use it. And Why I use it.

Specifically, this is for the Emerson Sensi UP500W Wi-Fi thermostat. It gets a little confusing those as Emerson makes 2 versions of each of their 3 smart thermostats, a Pro version, and a DIY version. The pro versions come with professional installation and have a 5-year warranty instead of a 3 year.

Just to make things a little more confusing, Emerson has different model numbers for the same thermostat depending on whether you got the pro or DIY version.

I’ll also give you the pros and cons as I see them from my almost 1 year of use with 2 of them. So if you’re looking for an Amazon programmable thermostat, you’ve come to the right place!

What is an Emerson Sensi Thermostat?

Plain and simple, as you’ll see in my Sensi thermostat review, this is a wi-fi digital thermostat for your home or business. It’s also a top-selling Amazon programmable thermostat.

While it is no longer accessible via a desktop/laptop computer without one of their paid plans, you can download a free app for Apple or Android and have full access to everything you need quickly and easily.

Thus you can change temperatures or programs on the fly in real time; even if you’re halfway around the world!

Unlike many thermostats the Sensi thermostat also can be programmed to automatically switch between AC and heat depending on the ambient air temperature; great for when you live in places like me!

I live in the Austin, Texas area.  Yesterday the highs were in the 80’s.  Tonight the lows will be in the low 40’s.  With one of these, I don’t have to remember before going to bed to switch from AC to heat!

They have a couple of models including 1 that’s a touchscreen.  My only experience is with the 1F86U-42WF model, but I’m sure they are all similar.

I purchased 2 of these for my 9 to 5 job almost a year ago.  We have a large space with 2 systems at opposite ends of our building.  Thus 1 controls the rear section and the other controls the front.

How much does an Emerson Sensi Thermostat cost?

For what they do, these thermostats are amazingly cheap!  As of right now on Amazon, they are under $125.00 for the version I have with free shipping.

The touchscreen versions are just $169 and are available with free Prime shipping!

Both have 4 stars on Amazon with literally thousands of reviews.  Thus I’m not alone in my Sensi thermostat review assessment of them being great!

Sensi thermostat battery life

The Sensi thermostat uses 2 AA batteries and they ARE included when you buy one. Emerson claims the battery life is 12-24 months.  A quick check of the 2 I have shows a completely full battery bar and I haven’t replaced them since purchasing several months ago.

The screen of the display shows both battery life and wi-fi connection just like a mobile device.

Ease of installation

I have installed over a dozen thermostats in my 53 years.  Usually, they are quite easy.  You remove the old one and hook up the new wires to the same color positions on the new thermostat.

The last Honeywell smart thermostat I installed I ended up having to get a pro out as I just couldn’t get it to work.

Luckily Sensi makes it incredibly easy!  Their free mobile app simply walked me through step by step.  Since the thermostat connects to wi-fi, the app and the thermostat were in communication and that ensured a quick and easy installation.

Works with Alexa!

Sensei thermostats integrate with Amazon Alexa for voice control and Wink smart home platforms and work with Google Assistant and Google Home using the no-cost Wink app.

Setting the basics for the Sensi Thermostat

No Sensi thermostat review would be complete without giving you a good understanding of how you can use it.

You can set the thermostat to cool, heat or auto.  Auto is where it switches between cold and hot depending on the air temp.  Don’t confuse this with the fan which also switches between auto and on.

To access these basic settings from the desktop, just click the plus sign next to where you see the fan and control settings.

Then a pop-up window opens up to allow more control.  You’ll see heat icon, a cold icon, off or auto mode. You will also see the fan settings.

Need to lock the keypad to keep prying hands from messing with it? No need to buy one of those plastic housing boxes that you lock with a key!  Just set the keypad lockout to on! Now you can only change the settings from a mobile app or desktop/laptop computer.

Want to set the temp?  Even if you’re on a program you can make manual adjustments on the fly just with the up or down arrows.  If you have keypad lockout off, this can simply be done on the thermostat as well as in the app. Emerson no longer allows desktop or laptop access without their paid plan.

Ready to program it?

Click the Scheduling tab.  Now you see options for programming. Select the cool setting, heat or the auto schedule where it goes between the 2 automatically.  Just hit “create new schedule” to create yours.

Once you’ve named your new schedule and decided which type you want, a simple weekly calendar opens up.You can have 1 program that is the same every day, 1 for weekdays and another for weekends. But you can also have a different setting every day; it’s totally flexible and customizable.

You can also have as many set points throughout the day as you wish.  Just click the + set point button to add more.

Sensi Thermostat App for Mobile

The mobile version doesn’t work much different than the desktop version.

But it’s great to be able to make changes on the fly and in the moment when you’re on the go; especially if you have the keypad locked but someone needs to change the temp.

Get the app for Android or Apple right here in my Sensi thermostat review.
