Sleep is defined to be an essential body function that allows the mind and body to recharge which will result to waking up alert and refreshed. There are internal and external factors that affect sleep and these would have a significant influence on the quality and quantity of sleep we could have.

Factors that have been affecting sleep are studied by sleep scientists to provide better understanding of the implications these factors could bring. Most people who are experiencing sleep issues often overlook the less obvious factors that could cause inadequate or poor-quality sleep.

Bedroom Environment

Your bedroom can directly affect the quality of your sleep. Light, temperature, noise, the stuff inside your room comprises your sleep environment. By being aware of these factors, you can easily eliminate those that can cause discomfort, distraction and stress.

Bright lights at night can impact the shifting of your internal body clock making it difficult to get a restful sleep. Background noises can also create distraction to your relaxation period although there are relaxing sounds that should be adjusted to a lower volume. Make your room free from clutter as well and adjust room temperature to a comfortable setting.

Alcohol and Caffeine

Alcohol and coffee are common beverages consumed by most people. Coffee lovers obviously consume more caffeine than others but the caffeine which is a stimulant can directly affect the body’s ability to promote sleep. It would take time for the body to metabolize caffeine depending on the quantity and amount as well. Half of your coffee intake will take about 5 to 6 hours to metabolize. On the other hand, alcohol which is wrongly use as a sleep aid can help a person to fall asleep quickly but sleep quality will be compromised.

Bed Mattress

Your mattress is a significant part of your sleeping equipment and your choice of mattress would determine the quality of your sleep. Your mattress should provide ample support and comfort.  If you are still sleeping on your old worn-out mattress and you find yourself waking up tired with some body aches then better consider buying a good quality mattress for quality sleep. Also consider adding a cool weighted blanket and a quality pillow apart from your good mattress, to make sure you get a good night sleep daily. It is recommended by sleep experts to change mattresses after 6 years under normal circumstances. However, your mattress could be a breathing ground for microbes and dust mites that could trigger allergic reactions. Aside from that, consider your sleeping position when choosing a mattress. Your mattress should provide you an unparalleled comfort as you slumber for the next 7 or more hours each night.

In our very busy and very noisy world, it is not enough that you get the right number of sleep each day. What matters more is the quality of your sleep so don’t hesitate to invest in an environment that will give you a better quality of sleep. Always remember that quality sleep means quality life. The quality of your sleep will contribute to the quality of your overall health and well-being.
