Fruitful and Frugal: 7 Ways to Save Money Fast

Are you able to pay your bills and make ends meet each month but struggling to afford anything outside of your basic needs? Are you dreaming of going on vacation, buying a new laptop, or even upgrading your vehicle?

You may need to strategize your savings plan. We’re going to discuss a few ways to save money fast in order to meet your financial goals. Keep reading for our money-saving tips!

Change Your Diet

It’s easy to order a pizza or go through the drive-thru a few times a week in order to have dinner on the table. Unfortunately, with these places, you are paying for convenience.

Instead of ordering out each night, having to pay delivery fees, and tips, consider meal planning.

Each Sunday (or whatever day works for you) sit down and write out a list of meals that can be cooked quickly and that your family loves to eat. Prepare your grocery list, taking note of what can be bought in bulk to save money.

Try to incorporate ingredients that are filling, nutritious, and inexpensive. Lentils, beans, and canned vegetables can be a great base to start a tasty recipe.

Also, watch the weekly sales of your favorite grocery stores for the things your family uses. Stock up on the sale items that may be frozen.

One of the biggest benefits of this money-saving tip is the end to the question, ‘what do you want for dinner?’ and potential weight loss.

Use Your Resources

The internet allows you to look up any information you could possibly ever want. Use it to find cheap or free things to do in your area. Many cities have community calendars that will post events like art shows, free outdoor concerts, or festivals.

Another great resource at your disposal is your local library. Checking out a book is far cheaper than buying literature that you or your kids may only read once or never pick up, to begin with. Plus, physically going to the library can be an adventure in itself for your children!

There are multiple money-saving applications that offer deals, savings, and coupons simply by using them. These programs can tell you where to find the cheapest gas, offer promo codes to use when shopping online, or reward you for walking.

Cancel Cable

How much do you pay each month for cable or satellite service? If we had to guess, the bill is in the $150 range. How often do you actually watch it?

There are several streaming services available for a fraction of the cost of traditional cable or satellite. These services often include the ability to stream live sports games, the news, or other shows that you may be addicted to.

Re-Evaluate Your Wireless Plan

If you have been on the same wireless plan for two, three, or more years, you are probably paying too much. Every year (and sometimes multiple times per year,) wireless companies offer new and cheaper plans.

They do this to entice new users to switch to their company but don’t make it a practice of telling current customers about the new deals. Call your mobile phone provider and ask about their current offerings. In fact, call several companies so you can compare the cost of each.

Your current wireless phone provider won’t want to lose your business and if you can tell them about a better plan with another company, they may work a bit harder to keep you as a customer.

Go Thrifting

As an adult, you probably have a few brands of clothes that you love and are willing to pay a bit more for. This is understandable, but many thrift stores end up carrying these same brands (and sell them for a fraction of the cost.)

For growing children, the chances are high that you spend a fortune keeping them in clothes that fit and aren’t full of stains. Thrift stores are an excellent option for kids’ clothes for this reason–you can replace too-small or too-stained clothes for a very low cost.

Believe it or not, many of the clothes found in thrift stores still have their original tags!

Use Cash

It is easy to walk through a store to find items you don’t need but really want to buy. It also easy to swipe that piece of plastic when it comes time to pay for these items.

Unfortunately, all of these little items add up and take away from your savings goal. Instead of constantly swiping a card (whether it is a debit or credit card,) use cash.

Paying with cash allows you to visualize how much is being spent by actually having to hand the money over to the cashier. Swiping a card doesn’t have the same effect and can lead to spending more money.

Learning effective cash management allows you to keep more money in your account and avoid unnecessary purchases.

Opt For Off-Brands

Off-brands, generics, store brand–whatever you would like to call them–are the same product as their name brand counterparts. This is especially true for canned goods, many toiletries, and over-the-counter medicines.

Believe it or not, the companies that manufacture the brand-name products are often responsible for making the generic versions. Big box stores buy these generic brands and market them as their store’s brand.

Because they don’t have the name recognition & fancy packaging, the stores can sell it for cheaper and make money. The manufacturer makes money from the store. Basically, it’s the same product at a lower cost and no name.

Ways To Save Money Fast: Don’t Spend It

Truthfully, one of the best ways to save money fast is to make a plan to avoid spending it. If you are truly working toward a savings goal, you will need to make sacrifices.

These sacrifices aren’t easy and you may feel slightly deprived, but in the long run, you will love the sense of accomplishment when you see your bank account!
