Should You Get Your Graduating Child a New Car?

Your child is graduating from high school or college. You have never been prouder in your entire life. You have watched them struggle with their studies – working day and night, every day. And now, the big day is coming, and you want to give them a gift for their hard work.

You look back to your own past and remember the gift that your parents gave you. Some of you may have received simpler things like bags, clothes and perhaps some jewelry. These are some things that you can use for when you work. And there are who received even more expensive gifts.

But, for some reason, every graduating student has requested or received a car as a gift. Maybe it is just something that everyone wants to have. You may have even received one yourself when you were a graduate. So now the question is whether you should get one for your own child.

Pros

Getting your child a new car is something that is exciting for both parties. You get to see the look and emotion on your child’s face as you hand them over the keys to the car. And they would be tearing up with joy and excitement as they realize that they now have a car.

That alone is a good enough reason to get them a car. But wait, there is more. Once they have their own vehicle, they can finally help around the house more. Sure, chores, like cleaning, washing the dishes, and taking out the trash are already done.

They are now able to go to the grocery store and pick up some supplies for the house. They can pick up and drop off other siblings at school. They can even do the same for you when you are in no state and condition to drive.

But the best part of it all is that they are now free to wander and explore everything that life and this world have. Granted that it is land-based of course. So for that, you can check out your local Holden dealers in Auckland for any recommendations as a gift.

Cons

You obviously want the best for your child. But, with the way the current economy is, it may not be feasible to buy a new car just yet. They do not even have jobs yet. Then you would thrust them something that requires a whole lot of money to operate and maintain.

There are expenses for gas, parking, servicing, and everything else. While you may want to give them a new car, and they may want it as well, it is just not a financially sound gift. You can wait for prices to go down if you’re going to get them one. Or you can at least wait for them to get a job.

That way, you can rest easy knowing that they will be able to operate and maintain the car on their own.

Everyone deserves something special when they graduate. They worked hard to obtain that diploma. And if you are thinking of getting something grand for your own kid, think of it as their first paycheck. Those studies will come a long way and will help a lot in their future.
