1. Comal River โ€“ New Braunfels (Near San Antonio)

The Comal River is a fantastic spot to cool off during the hot Texas summer.

With its crystal clear water and fun tubing experiences, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Enjoy a full day of relaxation in this beautiful natural setting, complete with picnic areas and easy access from downtown New Braunfels.

Whether you’re in Austin or San Antonio, this is easy to get to.

2. Canyon Lake โ€“ Canyon Lake (Between San Antonio & Austin)

Canyon Lake is a fantastic spot for a full day of fun in the sun.

The town of Canyon Lake is located near New Braunfels and Spring Branch, about an hour outside of Austin.

Youโ€™ll love the crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, boating, or just lounging on the shore. With multiple access points and picnic areas, itโ€™s an amazing place to cool off during the Texas heat.

Canyon Lake has struggled with water levels the last couple of years, so check before you go!

3. Blue Hole Regional Park โ€“ Wimberley (Near Austin)

Blue Hole Regional Park is a stunning spot perfect for a day out in the hill country of Wimberley, just outside of Austin.

Swimming is allowed in the designated spring-fed swimming area, surrounded by ancient cypress trees. And there are a couple of good chain swings hanging from those trees!

The crystal-clear waters are cool, making it a great escape from the Texas heat. With picnic areas and large boulders, it’s an ideal location to relax and enjoy nature.

Reservations required! But if you’re a Wimberley local like me, there are cheap, no-reservation locals nights several time a week!

4. Hamilton Pool Preserve โ€“ Dripping Springs (Near Austin)

Just 30 miles west of Austin, Hamilton Pool is a breathtaking natural grotto fed by a 50-foot waterfall. While it looks like a dream, swimming is often prohibited due to falling rocks or water bacteria levels.

5. Krause Springs โ€“ Spicewood (Near Austin)

Krause Springs is a beautiful spot located about a 40-minute drive from downtown Austin.

This area boasts a stunning natural swimming pool filled with crystal-clear water, perfect for cooling off in the Texas heat. The lush surroundings and large boulders make it an ideal location for a full day of relaxation and fun.

6. Barton Springs Pool in Austin

Barton Springs Pool is a beloved spot in the heart of Austin, inside of Zilker Park, perfect for cooling off during the Texas heat.

This natural swimming pool, fed by underground springs, keeps its water temperature around 68 degrees year-round, making it a refreshing escape. With its scenic views and recreational amenities, itโ€™s no wonder this place is popular among locals and visitors alike.

7. Jacob’s Well โ€“ Wimberley (Near Austin)

Near Wimberley, about an hour from Austin, Jacobโ€™s Well is a dramatic artesian spring in the Texas Hill Country.

Itโ€™s stunning to view, but swimming is often closed due to drought or safety conditions. Always check the county website before planning your visit.

Reservations are required to swim, but I’ve hiked to it many times without a reservation (it’s only about a mile from my house).

8. McKinney Falls State Park โ€“ East of Austin

Located just a short 20-minute drive from Austin’s downtown area, McKinney Falls State Park offers a tranquil natural escape. This accessible park features beautiful limestone waterfalls and multiple recreational opportunities.

The Lower Falls section provides a spacious swimming hole perfect for families, while the Upper Falls area features smooth rock formations ideal for relaxing in the sun.

For an enjoyable experience, remember to pack water shoes, as the rocky surfaces can become quite slippery. The park makes for an excellent half-day excursion, allowing you to experience nature without venturing far from the city.

9. Inks Lake State Park โ€“ Burnet (Northwest of Austin)

Inks Lake State Park is located in Burnet, about 75 minutes northwest of Austin, in the beautiful Highland Lakes region. Itโ€™s a favorite for swimming, especially at Devilโ€™s Waterhole, where you can float in clear water, jump off rocks, or hike around the scenic cliffs.

The park also has campsites, picnic areas, and kayak rentals, making it perfect for a full-day getaway or weekend trip.

10. Devil’s River State Natural Area โ€“ Val Verde County (Remote West Texas)

Devilโ€™s River is in a remote part of Val Verde County, west of San Antonio and several hours from any major city. It’s a rugged, scenic destination for experienced adventurers.

The riverโ€™s turquoise water is stunning, but access is limited, the terrain is difficult, and swimming here typically requires advanced planning, permits, and sometimes paddling in.

A local favorite inside the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Swim-friendly when water levels are high, especially after rain. No reservations needed.

24. Lake Longhorn โ€“ League City (Near Houston)
