Is a Baltic Amber Teething Anklet Safer Than a Necklace?

When it comes to soothing a teething baby, many parents hear about Baltic amber teething necklaces. But they also hear about safety concerns. So can you put an amber teething necklace on an ankle?

Yes, an amber teething necklace can be wrapped around an ankle, provided it is sized properly to neither be too loose nor too tight. It provides the same benefits as a necklace without the safety concerns.

The benefits will be the same given the succinic acid is released due to the warmth of the skin.

These accessories, which usually come in the form of necklaces or anklets, are believed to release a natural pain-reliever that can help ease a baby’s discomfort.

However, as with many things related to child safety, questions and concerns arise.

The most pressing among these concerns is whether a Baltic amber teething necklace or anklet option is safer. Both have their supporters and detractors, and the conversation around them can be confusing and overwhelming. What’s the difference between the two, and is one genuinely safer than the other?

The quest for an answer leads us down an intriguing path.

The very best company for Baltic Amber teething necklaces is Baltic Proud which you can get on Amazon.

Almost 4,000 ratings for that one product (they have several) and it’s an Amazon’s Choice product, and almost every review is 5-star. Certified as 100% Authentic Baltic Amber.

Is an Amber Teething Anklet Just as Effective as a Necklace?

The concept of using amber for teething relief has been around for centuries. Ancient people in the Baltic region believed that wearing amber close to the skin could help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with teething and drooling.

This belief still holds true today, as many parents swear by the power of genuine Baltic amber beads in providing natural relief for their little ones. While most commonly worn around a baby’s neck, some parents opt for an ankle placement instead.

The idea behind this choice is that babies are less likely to grab or tug at an anklet compared to a necklace, reducing the risk of choking or injury. However, it’s essential to note that there is no scientific research supporting one placement over another in terms of effectiveness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not endorse or recommend either method due to safety concerns. Their primary worry is the possibility of the choking hazard associated with any type of jewelry worn by young children.

However, if you decide on using an anklet, ensure it has plastic screw clasps that allow for easy release in case it gets caught on something. Additionally, make sure the anklet fits properly without being too loose or tight against your baby’s skin.

While there is no definitive answer regarding whether an amber teething anklet is just as effective as a necklace, both options have their pros and cons. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and ensuring your baby’s safety above all else.

Whether you choose an anklet or necklace, always verify that your purchase contains genuine Baltic amber with a certificate of authenticity and supervise your little one while wearing it. And avoid getting Baltic amber wet.

Remember that there are also alternative teething solutions available, such as chew toys or the use of medication if recommended by a healthcare professional.

How Does Amber Help With Teething?

Amber, the fossilized tree resin that has been prized for its beauty and healing properties for centuries, is believed to have soothing effects when it comes to teething. Amber is said to possess natural analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular choice among parents seeking alternative remedies for their babies’ teething woes.

When worn against the baby’s skin, the warmth of their little body heats up the amber, causing it to release succinic acid. This organic compound is believed to be responsible for reducing inflammation and pain associated with teething.

While scientific evidence supporting these claims may be limited, many parents swear by the effectiveness of amber when it comes to soothing their babies’ gums. The theory behind this lies in the active ingredient, succinic acid, being absorbed through the skin and entering the bloodstream, which then acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.

When considering whether an amber teething anklet could offer similar benefits as Baltic amber necklaces it’s crucial to understand that much of the perceived relief comes from direct contact between the amber and the baby’s gums. But over time, the effectiveness of an amber teething necklace can diminish, so it’s best to get a new one if you see signs of wear. An anklet may not provide this same level of contact due to its placement on the lower extremity.

However, if worn snugly enough around the child’s ankle, some proponents argue that body heat could still warm up the precious stones enough to release succinic acid into the bloodstream, albeit in smaller amounts.

While there may not be concrete scientific research confirming or refuting whether an amber teething anklet would be just as effective as a necklace placed directly on a baby’s neck or chest area, some parents believe that any form of contact with the amber can provide some relief.

Just remember to consider safety risks when opting for any form of jewelry for your baby, including strangulation and choking hazards. As always, consult with your pediatrician before trying teething remedies.

Consider alternative options like chew toys or raw amber teething necklaces if you have concerns about safety or effectiveness.

Are There Any Safety Concerns With an Amber Teething Anklet?

One of the key concerns with amber teething necklaces is the risk of choking.

As with any small accessory or piece of jewelry, there is a possibility that it could become detached or broken, posing a hazard to your teething baby. Although genuine Baltic amber is typically knotted between each bead for added safety, accidents can still happen.

All that being said, when the necklace is placed on a baby’s ankle and is neither too loose nor too tight, the primary concerns that come with a necklace go away.

But there are still those who question its effectiveness.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not endorse or regulate these products as they do not qualify as medication or medical devices. Therefore, relying solely on an amber anklet instead of seeking professional advice or utilizing proven alternatives may not provide adequate relief for your little one.

Although an amber teething anklet may seem like an attractive option for soothing your baby’s teething discomforts naturally, several safety risks need attention before deciding its use. Choking hazards and proper sizing are relevant factors that must be considered when contemplating this choice for your baby.

Furthermore, while Baltic amber is believed by some to offer natural relief, it is important to acknowledge the lack of substantial scientific research supporting these claims. Consulting with a healthcare professional and exploring alternative teething solutions may be wise considerations in ensuring your baby’s safety and comfort during this period.

How Do You Size an Amber Teething Anklet?

To measure, gently wrap a flexible tape measure around their ankle, just above the ankle bone. If you don’t have a tape measure on hand, you can use a piece of string and then measure it against a ruler.

It’s important to note that the anklet should fit snugly but not too tight. You want to avoid any discomfort or restriction of movement for your baby.

Ideally, there should be enough space for one finger to slide comfortably between the anklet and your baby’s skin. This ensures that it won’t be too loose and risks falling off unintentionally.

When purchasing an amber teething anklet, be sure to check with the manufacturer or seller for their specific sizing guidelines. They may provide recommendations based on typical age ranges or offer adjustable anklets with multiple size options.

Remember, safety is key when it comes to using any teething product for your little one. Always supervise them while wearing an amber teething anklet and remove it during sleep or bath time to minimize any potential risks.

Sizing an amber teething anklet correctly ensures that your baby can benefit from the natural teething relief that baltic amber aids in providing. By finding the right fit, you can help soothe their sore gums without resorting to medication or other potentially harmful alternatives.

What Are the Safety Concerns With Amber Teething Necklaces?

When it comes to amber teething necklaces, there are some safety concerns that parents should be aware of. One of the main concerns is the risk of strangulation.

Since these necklaces are worn around a baby’s neck, there is a potential for them to get entangled in something or accidentally pull on the necklace. To mitigate this risk, it’s important to supervise your baby when they’re wearing the necklace and remove it while they sleep.

Another safety concern is the possibility of choking or swallowing small parts. Amber teething necklaces usually have small beads that can potentially break off if subjected to excessive force.

While manufacturers typically string these beads on a strong cord, accidents can happen. It’s crucial to regularly inspect the necklace for any signs of wear and tear, such as fraying or loose beads.

Some experts argue that amber teething necklaces may not actually provide any therapeutic benefits for teething babies. Despite ancient people using amber for its supposed healing properties, scientific research regarding its effectiveness specifically for teething relief is limited.

Therefore, parents should be cautious about relying solely on an amber necklace without exploring other safe and proven methods. In light of these safety concerns and uncertainties surrounding their efficacy, many parents opt for alternative teething solutions.

Some popular options include giving babies cold objects like chilled teethers or wet washcloths to chew on, which can help soothe their gums naturally. Additionally, certain over-the-counter pain relief gels designed specifically for babies can provide temporary relief from the discomfort associated with teething.

Ultimately, it’s important to consult with your pediatrician and make an informed decision based on your child’s individual needs and safety considerations.

While baltic amber teething necklaces have gained popularity among parents seeking natural remedies for their little ones’ teething troubles, it’s crucial to consider safety concerns such as strangulation and choking hazards associated with wearing jewelry around a baby’s neck.

Furthermore, the lack of substantial scientific evidence regarding their effectiveness raises questions about their benefits. Exploring other safe and proven teething relief methods, such as cold objects or baby-friendly pain relief options, may provide a more reliable solution for your teething baby.

What Are Some Alternative Teething Solutions?

Teething can be a challenging time for both babies and parents. As we explore alternative teething solutions, it’s important to remember that what works for one baby may not work for another. However, there are several tried-and-true methods that have proven effective in soothing teething discomfort.

One popular alternative to amber teething necklaces is chew toys. These toys are specifically designed to provide relief for sore gums.

They come in various shapes and sizes, allowing babies to gnaw on them comfortably. Some chew toys are even made to be chilled in the refrigerator, providing a cooling sensation that can further soothe swollen gums.

It’s crucial to choose chew toys made from safe materials such as BPA-free plastic or silicone, ensuring they do not pose any safety risks. Another effective remedy is the use of cold things.

Many parents find that offering their babies something cold to chew on can alleviate discomfort during the teething process. Wet washcloths are a great option: simply wet them with cold water, wring out any excess liquid, and then let your baby chew on it.

The combination of the cool temperature and texture provides relief for their tender gums.

Always consult with your pediatrician or dentist before trying any new methods or remedies, especially if your child has underlying health concerns or allergies. Together with guidance from trusted professionals and a bit of trial and error, you’ll find the right teething solution that brings relief to your little one’s discomfort.

Conclusion

The debate on whether a Baltic amber teething anklet is safer than a necklace is not a clear-cut issue, and opinions vary widely.

Many advocates of the anklet believe it to be a more secure option, keeping the amber away from the child’s mouth and reducing choking risks. On the other hand, some argue that both options may present similar risks and benefits, and the choice largely depends on proper use and supervision.

Ultimately, the decision rests with the parent or caregiver, armed with thorough research and careful consideration of their child’s specific needs and behaviors. As with many parenting choices, the right decision might vary from family to family, and consultation with healthcare professionals can provide further insight tailored to individual circumstances.

Regardless of the choice made, the priority must always be the child’s safety and well-being.

13 Survival Tips for a Stay at Home Mom

1. Take a shower daily

It might seem like a small thing, but when your world revolves around diapers, dirty laundry, cooking & cleaning, it can be easy to let personal hygiene go by the wayside. After all, who’s going to see us anyway?

But a daily shower (or least 3 or 4 a week) where we aren’t holding a baby lifts our spirits. It makes us feel better about ourselves.

When we experience improved self-esteem, we become more inclined to engage in activities outside our homes. Feeling better about ourselves boosts our motivation to go out and explore the world around us.

2. Find activities outside the house

The life of a SAHM can’t revolve 100% around the house.

So, it’s crucial to seek out fun things to do, social gatherings, kid hangouts, and other events that help us step outside our homes and interact with people.

Plus the more kids are out of the house, the less mess they make!

Memberships to local zoos, museums, or even the local library are all great things to get as they make it easy to go on regular field trips.

3. Connect with other moms and friends

As we’ve discussed, your wife can’t have a toddler be the sole source of conversation for 8-10 hours. That would stretch the sanity of even the best of us.

So encourage her to find meet-up groups, local neighborhood Facebook mom groups, or just connecting with friends and family.

Trust me; she needs a connection with others to maintain her sanity.

4. Spend time on a hobby

Everyone needs something they love to do just for themselves.

It doesn’t need to take tons of time or cost tons of money, but for an isolated SAHM, she needs something to do she feels passionate about that doesn’t involve being a mom or wife.

That could be a true hobby or it could be something as simple as watching the kids for an hour in the evenings so she can read a good book.

As her what she would love to do, find a way to make it happen, and then encourage her to follow through; it’s easy to make excuses, so a gentle push from you may be necessary.

5. Be comfortable setting boundaries

Some of us, husbands and wives both, have trouble saying no.

Many of us were raised to be pleasers. We love saying yes to everyone and everything. But you know what else that is?

Exhausting!

Every time we say yes to something, we are effectively saying no to something else. In the world of the stay-at-home mom, it’s not uncommon for her to say yes to everything only to find her own needs wants, and desires totally last on the priority list.

So encourage her to say no.

Make sure she feels comfortable telling you if a request you have isn’t realistic for her day. Ask her what you can do to help her with her priority list.

Stay-at-home moms never get to clock out, so our work as dads doesn’t end the moment we get home.

6. Ask for help

As with the above, for many of us, it’s hard to ask for help also.

Especially if your wife feels a sense from you that everything to do with the house and kids is “her job”, it can be very hard for her to ask for help.

But depending on the size of the home, how many kids you have, and their ages, she may need help; sometimes desperately.

As day-job dads, we may never fully understand what SAHMs go through.

The good news is we don’t have to fully understand to be empathetic and supportive. Ask your wife what help she needs. Depending on your circumstances, maybe a once-a-week cleaning person might make all the difference.

Or, as I do in our house, get the kid’s breakfasts ready in the morning, clean the kitchen, and then take the kids to school (with the toddler).

Your wife’s needs may be totally different from my ex’s, so check in. Ask what she needs, and be as supportive as you can.

7. Get memberships for households with Pre-K kids

Stay-at-home moms can thrive by getting memberships to places like zoos, museums, and amusement parks for their pre-K kids. With a membership, you have quick and easy access to fun and educational activities.

It’s a great way to entertain the kids, especially when money is tight since the membership is already paid for. These outings provide valuable experiences for the little ones while giving moms a break from routine and a chance to enjoy family time outside the home.

8. Take a night off every once in a while

Taking a night off every once in a while is essential for stay-at-home moms to thrive.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with daily responsibilities, so a break is well-deserved. Whether it’s a date night with their partner or a fun outing with friends, this time away allows moms to recharge and focus on themselves.

Additionally, it encourages a more balanced life between work and personal time, helping to lessen tension and avoid exhaustion. Enjoying these moments of personal wellbeing can make stay-at-home moms feel rejuvenated and more lively, making them more prepared to meet the challenges of their position.

9. Plan regular date nights with your spouse

Planning regular date nights with your spouse is crucial for stay-at-home moms’ well-being.

In the middle of busy schedules and parenting responsibilities, nurturing the relationship with their partner is essential. Date nights offer quality time to connect, communicate, and have fun together, reinforcing the bond between partners.

It allows moms to step away from their role temporarily, helping them feel appreciated and valued beyond being a parent. These special moments also promote a stronger support system within the family, benefiting both parents and creating a positive atmosphere at home.

10. Organize a set routine

Organizing a set routine is a valuable strategy for stay-at-home moms to maintain a sense of structure and control amidst the chaos of parenting.

Having a routine helps establish expectations and provides a sense of stability for both the moms and their kids. Use an app like TimeTree on your phone (which you can share with your husband or phone-age kids), a dry-erase board, Google Calendar, or (my personal favorite) an app like GQueues (for both mobile and desktop/laptop).

However, it’s important to remember that with young children, especially Pre-K kids, plans might not always go as intended.

Having the ability to be flexible and adaptable is crucial for thriving as a stay-at-home mom. Being open to change and adjusting to different situations helps us navigate the challenges and joys of this role effectively.

Embrace the spontaneity and go with the flow when needed, ensuring a balanced approach to parenting and maintaining your sanity.

11. Stay physically active

Keeping up with physical activity is key for stay-at-home moms to flourish.

Frequent workouts, like strolling, running, or dancing, can uplift one’s spirits by triggering the release of endorphins and lessening stress.

Studies from Mayo Clinic demonstrate that exercising can considerably better mental health and amplify energy levels.

Adding exercise to the daily schedule can offer a well-deserved pause and improve the overall lifestyle quality for stay-at-home moms.

12. Have an activity to help manage stress

Having an activity to manage stress is vital for stay-at-home moms to thrive.

Participating in practices like meditation, yoga, martial arts, or other mindfulness exercises has been proven to positively affect one’s mood and lessen stress. Research from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reveals that mindfulness exercises are terrific for lowering stress and anxiety levels.

Implementing such activities regularly can help stay-at-home moms maintain their well-being and cope with the challenges of their role with greater ease.

13. Join a book club or start one with fellow moms

Joining a book club or starting one with fellow moms is an excellent way for stay-at-home moms to thrive.

This offers a chance to link up with folks who share similar interests, exchange ideas on a variety of books, and take part in substantial conversations.

Book clubs also offer a chance to escape daily routines and immerse in captivating stories, fostering intellectual stimulation and social interaction.

Sharing the joy of reading can alleviate feelings of isolation and offer a supportive community.

Whether meeting in person or virtually, book clubs provide a much-needed break and a sense of camaraderie for stay-at-home moms seeking a fulfilling and enriching experience.

14. Keep a gratitude journal to focus on the positives in life

Keeping a gratitude journal is a powerful practice for stay-at-home moms to stay positive and find joy in everyday moments.

By jotting down things they are grateful for each day, moms can shift their focus from challenges to blessings, boosting their mental well-being. Expressing gratitude for small victories, happy memories, or simple pleasures can bring a sense of fulfillment and contentment.

This practice helps cultivate a positive outlook and reminds moms of the many reasons to be thankful. Embracing gratitude can be a valuable tool for staying resilient and finding happiness in the journey of being a stay-at-home mom.

15. Prioritize sleep

Making sleep a priority is vital for stay-at-home moms to keep up their health and handle day-to-day tasks.

Getting enough rest improves mood, cognitive function, and overall health. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can promote better sleep quality.

Napping when possible can also provide an energy boost. Adequate sleep ensures moms are refreshed and better equipped to handle the challenges of parenting and household responsibilities.

Attending to their sleep requirements is a key aspect of personal well-being, enabling stay-at-home moms to flourish and be in top shape for both themselves and their loved ones.

Final thoughts

Being a stay-at-home mom can sometimes feel isolating, exhausting, and without much recognition.

The latter is because often husbands don’t fully understand or appreciate what their wives go through during the day while they are off at work.

The lack of a daily schedule, the challenges of young kids, meal planning, and taking care of the family home can be back-breaking. And often 99% of the conversations that happen in SAHM life are with toddlers.

So a SAHM needs some excellent survival tips to not only make it through the day, but to actually learn to love all the amazing things about getting to stay home and raise their kids.

Thankfully with an understanding husband and the right priorities, stay-at-home parents can learn to enjoy the quality time with their kids while being a good role model, taking care of the house, and enjoy the occasional nap time.

SAHMs can also enter the workplace and start a career. However, it’s not always as great as people make it out to be. So enjoy these years while you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do stay-at-home moms not lose their minds?

Being home with kids can be rewarding, but it can also become daunting and tension-filled. It’s crucial for stay-at-home moms to look after themselves and discover methods to maintain their peace of mind.

One strategy to keep balanced is to ensure that you reserve some time just for you.

This could mean setting aside a few moments each day to dive into a book, go for a stroll, or simply relish some tranquil time. Having a little break from the children can help you rejuvenate and provide the vitality you need to face the remainder of your day.

It is also important to find ways to connect with other adults. Joining a local mom’s group or taking an online class are great ways to meet other people who are in similar situations as you. Talking with other moms can help you feel less isolated and provide support when needed.

Supportive husbands of stay-at-home moms don’t want our wives to just survive, right?

So how can SAHMs be happier and feel fulfilled? To be clear, no one can make anyone but themselves happy. But husbands can remove roadblocks to happiness, change their own attitude and understanding, and support their wives in their needs.

Finally, it’s important for stay-at-home moms to place their physical well-being at the forefront.

Eating healthy food, ensuring enough rest, and sticking to a regular workout routine can help to reduce stress levels and boost overall health.

Caring for your body will provide the necessary energy to handle all the tasks that come with being a stay-at-home mom.

By setting aside some me-time, interacting with other grown-ups, and maintaining physical well-being, stay-at-home moms can keep their sanity intact while still savoring the joys of spending time at home with their kids.

For newbie moms, if you suspect even the slightest possibility of postpartum depression, it’s crucial to discuss it with a healthcare or mental health professional.

How do stay-at-home moms protect themselves financially?

Stay-at-home moms face unique financial challenges.

They frequently have to depend on their spouse’s financial support, and they might not have the same perks like health insurance that a working mom who has a job outside the home does.

And they can face a lot of financial uncertainty if the marriage goes south and they are facing a divorce since they don’t have their own income or their own career.

Separation or divorce can be a tough and emotionally taxing ordeal for any pair, but it can be particularly hard-hitting for stay-at-home moms. Without a steady income, stay-at-home moms may find themselves in a precarious financial situation if their marriage ends.

Fortunately, there are steps they can take to protect themselves financially in the event of a divorce.

The first step is to create an emergency fund. This fund should be a separate savings account from any joint account and should contain enough money to cover basic living expenses for at least six months. If your husband watches the bank accounts like a hawk, you may need to be discrete and take smaller amounts so as not to arose suspicion.

This will provide the stay-at-home mom with some financial security if she needs to leave her home or find another place to live during the divorce proceedings.

Do be aware though, that technically while married, all accounts will be considered community property. So technically your husband would be entitled to half of that.

The second step is to create a budget and stick to it.

This will help the stay-at-home mom track her expenses and ensure that she is not overspending on unnecessary items. It will also help her identify areas where she can save money, such as cutting back on eating out or canceling subscriptions that are no longer needed. And any extra money can go right into that emergency fund.

Finally, it is important for stay-at-home moms to seek legal advice before filing for divorce from a good family law attorney. And talking to a certified financial planner can’t hurt either.

A lawyer can help them understand their rights and ensure that they receive a fair settlement in the divorce settlement agreement. They can also provide advice on how best to divide assets and debts between the two parties, as well as how child support payments should be handled.

Lastly, get a credit card in your name only and don’t use it. Just have it in the event you need it.

By taking these steps, stay-at-home moms can protect themselves financially in the event of a divorce and ensure that they have enough money for financial independence during this difficult time.

Also, consider getting a part-time job or side hustle can also ensure a little extra income that you can save away for when you really need it.

Are mom friends necessary for stay-at-home moms?

Mom friends are an important part of the stay-at-home mom experience.

Having a support system of other moms who understand the unique challenges and joys of being a stay-at-home mom can be invaluable. It can provide much-needed emotional support, advice, and camaraderie.

Mom friends can help to break up the monotony of staying at home with young children.

They can provide an opportunity for socialization and connection with other adults, which is often lacking when you’re a stay-at-home mom. Having someone to talk to about parenting issues or just to share stories and experiences with can be incredibly beneficial.

Mom friends can also provide practical help and support.

Whether it’s watching each other’s kids so one parent can run errands or just having someone to call if you need advice on how to handle a particular situation, having a network of supportive moms is invaluable.

Finally, having mom friends is important for your own mental health and well-being. It’s easy to feel isolated when you’re a stay-at-home mom, but having someone to talk to who understands what you’re going through can make all the difference in helping you feel connected and supported.

In conclusion, mom friends are an essential part of the stay-at-home mom experience.

They provide emotional support, practical help, and an opportunity for socialization that is often lacking when you’re at home with young children all day long.

Having a network of supportive moms is invaluable for your own mental health and well-being as well as for providing much-needed advice and camaraderie during this special time in your life.

  • Practical techniques such as proper burping, adjusting mother’s diet, and soothing strategies at bedtime can promote restful nights for gassy babies. Consult a pediatrician if symptoms are persistent or accompanied by other signs.

Understanding Baby Gas: Causes and Symptoms

Gas in babies is primarily caused by their immature digestive system, improper latching during feeding, certain foods, and swallowing air while feeding.

It is also worth noting that the baby’s gas tends to be more noticeable during the night due to the stillness and lack of movement. As a result, a gassy baby may experience discomfort and difficulty sleeping, leaving both parents and baby exhausted.

Some common indications of a gassy baby include burping, flatulence, and digestive difficulties.

For breastfeeding mothers, it is important to be mindful of the foods you consume, as some, like beans, broccoli, and cabbage, are known to cause gas and food sensitivities in babies. A lactation consultant can help if desired.

By understanding the causes and symptoms of baby gas, you can take the necessary steps to alleviate your baby’s discomfort and ensure a more restful sleep.

Remember, a well-rested baby is a happy baby. By addressing the root causes of gas in your little one, you are setting the foundation for a peaceful and comfortable sleep environment.

The Importance of the Right Sleeping Position for Gassy Babies

Choosing the right sleeping position for your gassy baby is crucial for their comfort and safety. In the following sections, we will discuss why back sleeping is the most recommended position for gassy babies and explore other helpful positions that may alleviate gas and ensure a good night’s sleep.

Back sleeping is considered the best sleeping position for babies, as it reduces the risk of SIDS.

Back Sleeping: The Safest and Most Effective Position

Back sleeping is considered the best sleep position for gassy babies, as it facilitates easier gas release, reduces gas pain, and diminishes the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that all babies should sleep on their backs for safe and comfortable sleep. This position not only helps your baby’s digestive system function more efficiently but also provides the necessary support for their delicate neck and spine. (source)

In addition to back sleeping, swaddling, using a pacifier, and elevating your baby’s head may also help alleviate gas and promote restful sleep.

Swaddling provides a sense of security and comfort, while a pacifier can help soothe your baby and reduce the chances of them swallowing excess air. Elevating the baby’s head can also aid in the release of trapped gas, further easing discomfort and promoting sound sleep.

By adopting the back sleeping position and incorporating these additional measures, you can help your gassy baby sleep more soundly and reduce the risk of sleep-related complications.

Other Helpful Positions to Consider

While back sleeping is highly recommended for gassy babies, other positions may also be beneficial in alleviating gas and ensuring a comfortable sleep.

One such position for a fussy baby is left side sleeping, while others include elevated head and tummy time. However, it is essential to consult a pediatrician before trying any new positions to ensure the safety and well-being of your baby.

Gentle belly massage has been found to be effective in relieving tummy troubles in babies by applying pressure to their stomachs and helping to move gas bubbles out.

Tummy time, on the other hand, can assist in relieving gas by applying pressure on your baby’s stomach and aiding in the expulsion of gas bubbles. Remember, every baby is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Always consult with your pediatrician and carefully observe your baby’s response to different positions and techniques.

By considering these alternative positions and communicating with your pediatrician, you can help your gassy baby find relief and enjoy more restful nights.

Practical Tips for Reducing Gas in Babies

Reducing gas in babies involves a multifaceted approach that includes proper burping techniques, using anti-colic bottles, adjusting the mother’s diet, and ensuring a good latch during feeding.

By implementing these practical tips, you can help your baby experience less discomfort from gas and sleep more soundly.

A proper burping position involves keeping your baby upright while gently patting their back, burping during and after feeding sessions, and trialing different positions to help expel swallowed air.

Additionally, using anti-colic bottles, such as curved bottles, bottles with collapsible bags, and ventilated bottles, can help reduce the amount of air your baby swallows during feeding.

By incorporating these practical tips into your baby’s feeding routine, you can effectively reduce gas in your little one and create a more comfortable sleep environment.

Soothing Techniques for Gassy Babies at Bedtime

Soothing a gassy baby at bedtime can be a challenge, but there are various techniques that can help ease their discomfort. For bottle-fed babies, ensuring a proper feeding position is crucial to minimize air intake and gas. After feeding, try keeping the baby in an upright position to encourage burping and release trapped air bubbles.

Gripe water on Amazon and gas drops (simethicone drops) on Amazon are popular over-the-counter remedies that can aid in gas relief. Gripe water contains soothing herbs that may calm the digestive tract, while gas drops can help break down gas bubbles in the baby’s stomach.

Another effective method is baby massage, which involves gentle strokes on the baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction to promote digestion and ease gas. Massaging in the supine position can be particularly helpful for a colicky baby.

Creating a calm and relaxing sleep environment is also beneficial. Try playing soft music or white noise to help the baby relax. Swaddling is not recommended in this context, as it may constrict the baby’s tummy and worsen gas symptoms.

When putting the baby down to sleep, ensure they are in a safe sleeping position, such as on their back. The supine position can aid in better digestion and reduce the risk of SIDS.

It is essential to be patient and observe the baby’s cues during these soothing techniques. Every baby is different, and finding the most effective method for relieving gas can require some trial and error. Always consult a pediatrician if the baby’s gas symptoms persist or worsen, as they can provide further guidance and recommendations for individual cases.

When to Consult a Pediatrician About a Gassy Baby

It is important to know when to consult a pediatrician about your gassy baby.

If your baby’s gas is persistent, causing excessive discomfort, or accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, it is necessary to consult a pediatrician. Your baby’s health and well-being should always be your top priority, and seeking professional advice can help address any underlying issues that may be causing their gas-related discomfort.

By recognizing the signs that warrant medical attention and consult your pediatrician when necessary, you can ensure your baby receives the appropriate care and support they need to overcome gas-related issues and sleep more comfortably.

Additional Sleep Strategies for Gassy Babies

In addition to the sleeping positions and soothing techniques discussed earlier, there are other sleep strategies that can help your gassy newborn achieve more restful sleep.

Creating a calming sleep environment, adjusting bedtime routines, and using sleep aids like the Huckleberry app or 23andMe DNA test can provide valuable insights into your baby’s unique sleep behaviors.

Just click that link for 23andMe to get 10% when you sign up for the DNA test.

To create a calming sleep environment, maintain a dim and quiet atmosphere, utilize white noise, and avoid stimulation before bedtime. Adjusting bedtime routines may involve providing a warm bath, massaging your baby’s tummy, and offering a pacifier or other comfort object to help them fall asleep.

By implementing these additional sleep strategies, you can further improve your baby’s sleep quality and comfort, ensuring both you and your little one enjoy more restful nights.

Summary

In conclusion, addressing the issue of gas in babies requires understanding the causes and symptoms, choosing the right sleeping positions, implementing practical tips to reduce gas, and employing soothing techniques at bedtime.

By following the advice and strategies provided in this blog post, you can help your gassy baby sleep more comfortably and peacefully.

Remember, every baby is unique, and it is essential to consult your pediatrician before trying new positions or techniques. With patience, persistence, and the right approach, you and your baby can conquer the challenges of gas and enjoy more restful nights together.

Do You Leave Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces on at Night?

Amber teething necklaces have been a topic of debate among parents, with some swearing by their effectiveness in soothing teething pain while others express concerns about their safety.  But can you leave an amber teething necklace on at night?”

Amber teething necklaces should not be worn by infants or toddlers during sleep or unsupervised periods. There is a risk of choking or strangulation if the necklace gets caught on something. It is recommended to remove the necklace and provide appropriate teething relief methods.

Always prioritize the safety and well-being of the child.

But what’s the truth behind these controversial accessories, and are they a wise choice for your little one?

Let’s dive into the world of amber teething necklaces and explore the arguments, expert opinions, and alternatives in order to make an informed decision.

Short Summary

  • Amber teething necklaces pose a choking and strangulation risk, so proper supervision is necessary.
  • Baltic amber may provide relief from teething pain but there’s no scientific evidence to support this claim.
  • When purchasing an amber necklace/bracelet, ensure it is genuine and follow safety guidelines for use with babies.

Amber Teething Necklace Safety: Nighttime Use

When it comes to using amber teething necklaces, nighttime use is a significant area of concern.

Parents should be aware that these necklaces are not entirely safe for use around a baby’s neck during sleep due to potential choking and strangulation risks. It’s essential to understand these risks and take appropriate precautions to ensure your baby’s safety.

To reduce the risk of harm, parents should never leave an amber teething necklace on their children.

Choking Hazards

A primary concern with amber teething necklaces is the choking hazard they pose. Amber beads can potentially come loose and enter a baby’s mouth, leading to a choking incident. The Canadian Paediatric Society has reported cases of children choking on beads from amber teething necklaces, raising alarms about their safety.

This risk is particularly concerning during unsupervised sleep when a baby may not be able to alert caregivers to a problem.

Strangulation Risks

Strangulation risks are another significant concern with amber teething necklaces, especially during sleep. In 2018, a study conducted in Nova Scotia revealed that some amber necklaces, including those designed for teething, posed a strangulation risk if they became caught on something. The study found that several necklaces did not open with the necessary force, increasing the potential for serious injuries.

In one case, a four-month-old infant experienced strangulation due to wearing baby wear, specifically a teething necklace, to bed, which had become twisted and obstructed airflow and blood flow to the baby’s head.

Supervision and Sleep

Supervision is crucial when using amber teething necklaces, and they should not be worn during sleep. Parents should ensure that the necklace is the appropriate size, remove it during rest or sleep, and monitor their child while wearing it.

By adhering to these safety measures, parents can minimize the risks associated with amber teething necklaces.

Understanding Amber Teething Necklaces

How Amber Teething Necklaces Work

Amber teething necklaces, specifically Baltic amber teething necklaces, are made from Baltic amber, a fossilized tree resin believed to contain succinic acid, which may help soothe sore and swollen gums.

The necklaces are intended to be worn against the skin, where the baby’s body temperature warms the amber and releases the succinic acid into the bloodstream, supposedly providing teething pain relief and amber necklaces can help with drooling too.

However, despite the many anecdotal claims of their effectiveness, and thousands of 5-star reviews, scientific research has yet to support the idea that amber teething necklaces work.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence, many parents continue to turn to amber teething necklaces as a natural remedy for teething pain. But with the safety concerns raised by experts, it’s essential to approach these necklaces with caution and consider alternative, safer methods of teething relief.

Baltic Amber and Succinic Acid

Baltic amber, a variety of raw amber found primarily in the Baltic Sea region, contains succinic acid and is believed to possess anti-inflammatory and natural analgesic properties. Succinic acid is a popular ingredient in many different types of medications. It can be found in vitamin supplements, heart medicines, and creams for relief from arthritis.

Proponents of amber teething necklaces argue that the succinic acid in the amber can help alleviate teething pain when absorbed through the skin.

Is Amber Toxic?

Natural amber is not considered to be toxic, and succinic acid is deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, it’s important to remember that amber teething necklaces should not be ingested, especially by infants, due to the associated safety risks.

Always use caution and follow safety guidelines when using amber teething necklaces with your baby.

Expert Opinions and Recommendations for Amber Teething Necklaces

Expert opinions on amber teething necklaces vary, with some pediatricians and the FDA warning against their use due to safety concerns. It’s essential to be aware of these warnings and weigh the potential risks against the purported benefits when considering using an amber teething necklace for your child.

In this section, we’ll explore the views of pediatricians, the FDA, and alternative organizations to provide a well-rounded perspective on the subject.

Pediatrician Views

Pediatricians generally do not recommend amber teething necklaces due to the risks they pose. Dr. Farah Abdulsatar, a pediatrician in London, Ontario, has stated, “There is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of these necklaces; however, there is substantial evidence that they pose a risk of harm”. (source)

The American Academy of Pediatrics has also issued a strong warning against the use of amber teething necklaces and does not endorse the use of any jewelry for infants. (source)

FDA Warnings

The FDA has issued warnings against the use of amber teething necklaces, citing safety concerns such as choking and strangulation. The FDA has received reports of children choking on beads that break off and an 18-month-old being strangled to death by an amber necklace.

These warnings highlight the potential dangers associated with using amber teething necklaces and the importance of considering alternative, safer methods of teething relief. (source)

Alternative Organizations’ Stance

Other organizations, such as the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS), also advise against using amber teething necklaces due to safety concerns. While some alternative medicine organizations may advocate for amber teething necklaces, it’s critical to investigate the safety of the product before employing it. (source)

With the warnings from experts and child safety organizations, it’s essential to explore other natural teething remedies as an alternative to amber teething necklaces.

That being said, the debate of effectiveness aside, the main (if not only) concern is around choking. So if you opt for amber bracelets or amber anklets, there really isn’t an issue.

Safe Alternatives to Amber Teething Necklaces for Teething Relief

If you’re looking for safer alternatives to amber teething necklaces, there are several options available that can provide teething relief for your baby without the associated risks.

In this section, we’ll discuss chewable toys, cold items, and gentle massages as safe alternatives to amber teething necklaces.

Chewable Toys

Chewable toys made from silicone or rubber can provide safe teething relief for babies. These toys are specifically designed to help provide teething relief and come in a variety of shapes and textures to suit your baby’s preferences. Popular options include Sophie La Girafe, Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether, Nuby 3 Step Soothing Teether Set, and Winkel by Manhattan Toy.

Always ensure that the chewable toy is made of non-toxic materials and supervise your baby during use.

Cold Items

Cold items, such as frozen fruit or a washcloth, can help soothe teething pain. For teething relief, cold items such as teething rings, a cold spoon, a frozen washcloth, frozen bagels, fruit pops, or a hard vegetable like a carrot can be utilized. These items provide a cooling sensation on your baby’s gums and can help reduce inflammation and discomfort.

It is important to remember that these items should be used with caution. Always make sure that the information is accurate.

Gentle Massages

Gentle massages on the baby’s gums can provide relief from teething discomfort and soothe sore gums. Using a clean adult finger or a damp washcloth, you can apply gentle pressure and rub your baby’s gums inside the baby’s mouth to help relieve teething pain.

This natural, hands-on approach to teething relief is both safe and effective, and it allows you to bond with your baby while soothing their discomfort.

Proper Care and Use of Amber Teething Necklaces

If you choose to use an amber teething necklace, it’s crucial to follow proper care and use guidelines to minimize the risks associated with them. In this section, we’ll discuss choosing the correct length, using breakaway closures, and regular cleaning and maintenance for amber teething necklaces.

When selecting the correct length for an amber teething necklace, it’s important to choose the correct length.

Correct Necklace Length

The correct necklace length is essential for your baby’s safety and comfort. The recommended length for an amber teething necklace depends on the age of the child. For newborns, the necklace should be between 8 and 10 inches, while for young children, the length can range from 11 to 14 inches.

Most customers find that the 12-13 inches length is ideal due to its comfort level and reduced risk of tangling or biting.

To ensure the appropriate fit and safety of an amber teething necklace, it is important to find the right balance. The necklace should not be too loose, as this could allow the child to lift it up and potentially chew on it, which is not intended. On the other hand, it should not be too tight, causing discomfort or posing a risk of strangulation.

A good guideline is to check the fit by attempting to insert two to three fingers between the necklace and your child’s neck. This ensures that there is enough space for comfort and movement while minimizing the risk of the necklace becoming a choking hazard or causing any discomfort.

Breakaway Closures

Breakaway closures, also known as “pop clasps,” are a crucial safety feature for amber teething necklaces. These clasps are designed so that the necklace breaks with minimal force, allowing the child to be freed in the event of entanglement. Two types of breakaway closures are available: a screw clasp and a pop.

Ensure that the amber teething necklace you choose has a breakaway safety clasp to reduce the risk of choking or strangulation.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prolong the life of an amber teething necklace. To clean the necklace, use lukewarm water and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh soaps or detergents that may damage the beads. After cleaning, dry the necklace carefully and polish it with clear olive oil.

Additionally, avoid contact with household cleaners and exposure to high temperatures to keep the amber in optimal condition.

Real vs. Fake Amber Teething Necklaces: Ensuring Quality

To ensure the quality of amber teething necklaces, it’s important to be able to identify genuine Baltic amber.

In this section, we’ll explore how to distinguish true Baltic amber from fake and provide tips for purchasing a quality amber teething necklace.

When shopping for an amber teething necklace, it’s important to look for amber teething bracelets as well, since they can be a great alternative or addition to the necklace.

Identifying Genuine Amber

Genuine amber jewelry can be identified through tests such as the heat test and the saltwater test. The heat test involves observing the reaction of the amber when exposed to a heat source, while the saltwater test involves submerging the amber in a saline solution and checking if it floats.

If the amber floats during the saltwater test, it can be confirmed that it is genuine amber.

All that being said, it is best if amber teething necklaces don’t get significantly wet. So take them off before bathtime, especially when swimming in chlorinated water.

Purchasing Tips

Purchasing tips for Baltic amber necklaces include researching the seller, ensuring the amber is raw, and looking for third-party certification. Assess reviews and seek out customer feedback when researching the seller, and ensure that the necklace has undergone autoclave treatment.

Additionally, confirm that the necklace is the appropriate length for your child. By following these tips, you can increase the likelihood of purchasing a quality amber teething necklace for your baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of Baltic amber teething necklaces?

Baltic amber teething necklaces are worn to help soothe sore and swollen gums with the succinic acid they contain, absorbed through the skin.

The baltic amber beads are activated by body heat and provide natural teething relief.

But that does not come from the child chewing on the beads. Amber products should not go in a child’s mouth, nor should the necklace be large enough to allow a child to chew on it.

Are there any scientific studies supporting the effectiveness of amber teething necklaces?

No scientific studies exist to support the efficacy of amber teething necklaces.

Do you leave an amber teething bracelet on at night?

Unlike an amber teething necklace, which can be a choking hazard, an amber teething bracelet or anklet does not pose any direct hazard. But always seek out the advice of your pediatrician before utilizing any medical treatment.

How many babies have died from amber teething necklaces?

I could only find one instance online of a fatality regarding an amber teething necklace.

This case was from 2016 and involved an 18-month-old child named Deacon who became unconscious while wearing it at daycare. Ironically the daycare was charged with the fatality despite the necklace being placed on the child by the parents.

It is also obvious from the photos I saw that the necklace was not sized correctly for the child as it appeared too loose. Remember you should only be able to fit 2-3 fingers in between the necklace and the child’s neck.

Obviously, the death was a tragedy, but unless there is more to the story than I saw, the daycare clearly was not at fault and the parents should have taken greater care that the necklace was the correct size.

It was also not clear if the necklace had a breakaway clasp which would have allowed it to come loose if it got pulled or tangled.

It is worth noting that various regulatory bodies, such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, have issued warnings about the potential risks associated with these necklaces. They advise against using them for infants, as they pose a choking hazard or risk of injury.

Parents and caregivers should consider alternative teething remedies that prioritize the safety of their infants.

This may include using teething rings made of safe materials, gentle gum massages, or providing chilled or frozen teething toys. Consulting with pediatricians or healthcare professionals can provide further guidance on safe and effective teething relief methods.

Do Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces Help with Drooling?

As a parent, you are constantly on the lookout for the best and safest remedies to alleviate your baby’s discomfort during teething. Among the options, amber teething necklaces have gained popularity for their potential to help with teething pain. But, does an amber teething necklace help with drooling?

Amber teething necklaces work by releasing succinic acid, a natural substance found in amber, when in contact with the warmth of the baby’s skin. This acid may have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing drooling and discomfort associated with teething.

However, there is limited scientific evidence to support these claims. It is important to note that the release of natural oils from amber is a theory and not scientifically proven. As with any alternative remedy, it is recommended to consult with healthcare professionals and consider the potential risks before using amber teething necklaces for drooling or teething pain relief.

And how exactly do they work?

This blog post delves into the science and anecdotal evidence behind amber teething necklaces, the teething process, and alternative methods for managing drooling and teething pain.

Short Summary

  • Amber teething necklaces are believed to contain natural pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, Their effectiveness is based on anecdotal evidence.
  • Alternative methods such as teething toys, cold compresses, and gum massages can provide relief from drooling or discomfort associated with the teething process.
  • Amber necklaces may also offer adults potential benefits such as improved immunity and protection against drug-resistant infections due to succinic acid they contain.

The very best company for Baltic Amber teething necklaces is Baltic Wonder which you can get on Amazon.

How Do Amber Teething Necklaces Work?

Amber teething necklaces, typically worn around the child’s neck, are made from fossilized tree resin, specifically Baltic amber, which is believed to contain the active ingredient succinic acid – a natural substance with potential pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

But some parents do opt for bracelets or anklets to eliminate any choking hazard.

The necklaces are designed to be worn by teething babies, and the warmth of their skin releases the succinic acid from the amber beads, which are then absorbed through the skin. This process is believed to alleviate inflammation, pain, and discomfort associated with sore gums and teething, due to the natural analgesic properties, ultimately reducing drooling and helping to relieve teething pain.

It is important to note, however, that the effectiveness of amber teething necklaces is primarily based on anecdotal evidence, as there is currently no scientific research to support the amber teething necklaces claim.

Many parents have reported positive results with the use of these necklaces, but without scientific backing, it is difficult to definitively attribute their success to the necklaces themselves.

The role of succinic acid in reducing drooling

The potential benefits of amber teething necklaces are largely attributed to the presence of succinic acid in the amber beads.

Succinic acid is thought to possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help alleviate drooling and teething discomfort. When the necklace is worn by a teething baby, the warmth of their skin releases the succinic acid from the amber beads, which is then absorbed through the skin, potentially alleviating inflammation and pain, and reducing drooling.

However, it is important to remember that the effectiveness of succinic acid in reducing drooling and teething pain is still a subject of debate, as there is little scientific evidence to support these claims.

Many parents rely on amber teething necklaces based on anecdotal evidence and personal experience, but without scientific research, it is difficult to determine the true effectiveness of these necklaces.

Anecdotal evidence vs. scientific research

As mentioned earlier, the effectiveness of amber teething necklaces is primarily based on anecdotal evidence from parents who have observed improvements in their baby’s teething symptoms after using the necklaces.

This anecdotal evidence suggests that amber teething necklaces may provide some relief for teething pain and drooling in some cases.

However, it is crucial to highlight that there is currently no scientific research or evidence available to substantiate the claims related to amber teething necklaces. While many parents have reported positive results, it is important to keep in mind that these experiences may not be universally applicable, and the effectiveness of amber teething necklaces may vary from one individual to another.

Also, understand that the beads do contain small amounts of succinic acid. So the controversy surrounds whether or not contact with skin is enough to release it into the body.

And the potential choking hazard is another top concern, although critics don’t seem to want to address the fact that many parents opt for a bracelet or anklet over a necklace which eliminates that concern.

Understanding the Teething Process

Teething is a natural process in which a baby’s first set of teeth emerge through the gums, usually in pairs. The signs of teething may include:

  • Tender or painful gums
  • Increased salivation
  • Inclination to chew on hard objects
  • Uncharacteristic irritability

Drooling in infants during teething is due to the inflammation and irritation caused by the teeth pushing through the gums, resulting in increased saliva production. Understanding the teething process and its associated symptoms is crucial for parents seeking effective solutions to manage their baby’s discomfort.

As mentioned earlier, amber teething necklaces are believed to help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with teething. However, it is important to explore alternative methods for managing drooling and teething pain as well, including teething toys, cold compresses, and gum massages.

Symptoms of teething

The typical indications of teething tend to include:

  • Increased salivation
  • Agitation
  • Inflamed gums
  • Skin rashes
  • Coughing
  • Biting and gnawing
  • Low-grade fever
  • Cheek rubbing
  • Ear pulling
  • Fussiness
  • Crying
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Chewing on items
  • Slightly raised temperature

Babies drool during teething due to the swelling and tenderness of their gums, as they attempt to alleviate the discomfort. In addition to the primary symptom of tooth eruption, these symptoms may also be present.

Some babies experience more severe symptoms of teething than others, as they may not be as sensitive to the associated discomfort as other babies. Regardless of the severity of symptoms, understanding the signs of teething can help parents identify when their baby is experiencing discomfort and seek appropriate remedies.

Why do babies drool during teething?

Gum irritation during teething is the primary cause of drooling in babies, resulting in an increased production of saliva. As the teeth push through the gums, inflammation, and irritation occur, leading to increased saliva production and difficulty swallowing.

While drooling can be a common and natural part of the teething process, it is crucial for parents to be aware of the possible discomfort their baby may be experiencing and seek effective remedies, such as:

  • Amber teething necklaces
  • Teething toys
  • Cold washcloths or teething rings
  • Gentle gum massages
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers (consult with a pediatrician before use)

These methods can help alleviate their baby’s teething pain and discomfort.

How to Choose the Right Amber Teething Necklace

When choosing an amber teething necklace for your baby, it is important to consider the type of amber beads used and the reputation of the seller.

Raw, unpolished amber beads are recommended for teething necklaces, as they possess the highest concentration of succinic acid, which can naturally assist in reducing inflammation in the body. To ensure that you are dealing with a reliable vendor, look for those with a proven track record and comprehensive product descriptions.

It is also essential to verify the authenticity of the amber used in the teething necklace. One way to do this is by performing a saltwater test, which involves preparing a glass of saline solution (1 part salt to 2 parts water) and observing if the amber floats in it.

Types of amber beads

Natural Baltic amber is the most widely utilized type of amber beads for teething necklaces.

In fact, a Baltic amber teething necklace is a popular choice among parents of young children. Additionally, there are various types of amber beads based on their formation or cutting.

Raw, unpolished genuine Baltic amber beads, from the Baltic region, are the suggested choice for a Baltic amber necklace, as they contain the highest concentration of succinic acid. Parents often opt for Baltic amber teething necklaces due to their effectiveness and natural properties.

Succinic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in amber, is believed to possess anti-inflammatory properties and to be a natural pain reliever, which may help alleviate drooling and teething discomfort.

By choosing raw, unpolished amber beads for your baby’s teething necklace, you can potentially maximize the benefits of this natural remedy.

Finding a reputable seller

When searching for a reliable seller for amber teething necklaces, it is prudent to inquire with the seller regarding the source of their amber, particularly when purchasing from eBay or Amazon. Confirmation of amber authenticity can be provided by a third party, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Another important factor to consider when selecting an amber teething necklace is the safety features incorporated in the design. Breakaway closures are designed to break apart if the necklace is caught or pulled too hard, while double-knotted beads prevent all the beads from falling off the necklace in the event of it breaking.

But the very best company for Baltic Amber teething necklaces is Baltic Wonder which you can get on Amazon.

Safe Use and Care of Amber Teething Necklaces

Safely using and caring for amber teething necklaces is essential for maximizing their benefits and minimizing potential risks.

Ensuring a proper fit is crucial, with the necklace measuring at least 2 inches longer than the diameter of your baby’s neck. Supervision is also imperative, as amber teething necklaces may present a choking hazard if not secured properly or if the child is left unattended while wearing one.

When it comes to cleaning and maintaining your amber teething necklace, it is advised to wash the necklace every month or so with a mild soap and allow it to dry in the sun.

The necklace may be worn while bathing but should be removed before entering a chlorinated pool. But ideally, avoid getting an amber teething necklace wet.

Proper fit and supervision

An amber teething necklace should fit comfortably, yet not too tightly, and should measure at least 2 inches longer than the diameter of the neck. This ensures that the necklace is neither too tight nor too loose, avoiding potential choking hazards.

It is not recommended to wear an amber teething necklace while the baby sleeps, as there is a risk of strangulation. Always supervise your baby while they are wearing the necklace and utilize safety features such as breakaway closures and double-knotted beads to minimize the risk of choking.

Cleaning and maintenance

To clean and maintain an amber teething necklace, follow these steps:

  1. Use a soft, clean microfiber towel.
  2. Mix lukewarm soapy water.
  3. Gently wipe the necklace with the towel soaked in the soapy water.
  4. Rinse the necklace with clean water.
  5. Pat dry with a soft cloth.
  6. Avoid using harsh soaps, detergents, and household cleaners, as these can damage the amber beads and affect their succinic acid content.

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of your amber teething necklace. It is suggested to clean the necklace regularly and replace it every two years to maintain its potential benefits.

Alternative Methods for Managing Drooling and Teething Pain

While amber teething necklaces may provide some relief for teething pain and drooling, it is important to explore alternative methods for managing these symptoms as well. Some alternative methods include teething toys and rings, cold compresses, and gum massages.

These methods may provide additional relief or work in conjunction with amber teething necklaces to help alleviate your baby’s drooling and teething discomfort.

By exploring various remedies and combining them as needed, you can create a customized approach to managing your baby’s teething pain and drooling, ensuring their comfort during this challenging developmental stage.

Teething toys and rings

Teething toys and rings are designed to provide relief to babies experiencing teething discomfort.

These toys are typically made from materials such as silicone, wood, and rubber, and some can be cooled in the refrigerator for additional relief. Teething toys and rings offer relief by enabling babies to chew and apply pressure to their gums, thus helping to alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with teething.

When utilizing teething toys and rings, it is imperative to ensure that they are constructed of safe materials and lack any sharp edges or small parts that could potentially be a choking hazard. Supervision is essential when using teething toys to guarantee your baby’s safety.

Cold compresses and gum massages

Cold compresses and gum massages can provide relief for teething pain through cooling sensations and massaging the gums. Cold compresses can help reduce inflammation and alleviate discomfort associated with teething, while gum massages can help break up any tissue or bacteria that may be contributing to pain and discomfort.

When utilizing cold compresses and gum massages, it is essential to ensure that the cold compress or ice pack is not excessively cold, as this could cause additional discomfort. Similarly, be gentle when massaging your baby’s gums to avoid causing further pain and unease.

Amber Necklaces for Adults: Benefits Beyond Teething

Baltic amber jewellery is not only beneficial for babies, but can also offer potential benefits for adults. Wearing an amber necklace may help.
  • Relieve inflammatory pain
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Alleviate arthritis symptoms
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Combat drug-resistant infections

The succinic acid found in amber is believed to provide a pain-relieving substance, with lighter-colored amber containing higher levels of succinic acid.

By wearing amber necklaces, adults can potentially tap into the natural pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties of succinic acid, providing another option for managing chronic pain and promoting overall wellness with amber jewelry.

Summary

In conclusion, amber teething necklaces have gained popularity as a natural remedy for managing drooling and teething pain in babies.

While the effectiveness of Baltic amber teething necklaces is primarily based on anecdotal evidence, many parents have reported positive results.

It is crucial to choose the right amber beads, find a reputable seller, and ensure proper fit and supervision when using amber teething necklaces. Additionally, exploring alternative methods such as teething toys, cold compresses, and gum massages can provide further relief for your baby.

Can Amber Teething Necklaces Be Worn in Water?

A Baltic amber teething necklace is composed of fossilized resin from trees and has been used for centuries as a natural analgesic to help alleviate a baby’s gums discomfort when teething.

The concept behind the healing properties of amber teething necklaces is that they contain succinic acid, which is believed to have a soothing effect on sore and swollen gums. Many parents wonder if amber teething necklaces work, and while individual results may vary, the long history of their use suggests potential benefits.

But, can these necklaces be worn safely in water?

The simple answer is yes; Baltic amber teething beads, also known as amber beads, can be worn in water. However, it is advisable to avoid long-term exposure to water, particularly hot water and chemicals found in pools and soaps, as they may affect the necklace’s appearance and efficacy.

Showering and Bathing with Amber Teething Necklaces

While it is possible to shower or bathe while wearing an amber teething necklace, it’s recommended to remove the necklace before using soap or shampoo to prevent any potential damage. This ensures that your baby’s necklace remains effective in providing teething relief and retains its natural beauty.

Swimming and Amber Teething Necklaces

Swimming (especially in a chlorinated pool) or using hot tubs with an amber teething necklace, or type of amber jewelry, is not advised due to the potential exposure to chemicals and saltwater, which can damage the necklace. Moreover, the thread on the jewelry may weaken due to frequent wetting and drying.

To ensure proper care of the necklace after swimming, rinse it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly, inspecting it for any signs of damage, such as fraying or discoloration.

Caring for Your Amber Teething Necklace After Water Exposure

Taking proper care of your amber teething necklace after water exposure is essential to maintain its effectiveness and appearance. By following a few simple steps, you can ensure your necklace continues to provide relief for your baby’s teething pain and remains a beautiful piece of jewelry.

A crucial aspect of caring for your amber teething necklace after water exposure is drying and cleaning. By doing so, you can help protect the necklace from damage and ensure its longevity, allowing your baby to continue enjoying its soothing effects.

Drying and Cleaning

To properly dry and clean your amber teething necklace after water exposure, gently use a soft cloth or toothbrush with gentle soap and warm water to clean the beads. Rinse the necklace thoroughly and dry each bead carefully with a soft cloth or air-dry it.

Avoid frequent wetting and drying of the necklace, as this could potentially weaken the stringing material.

Protecting the Necklace from Damage

To prevent any damage to your amber teething necklace, store it in a cool and dry place, avoiding any exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. This simple precaution will help ensure the necklace’s longevity and maintain its effectiveness in providing teething relief for your baby.

The Impact of Sunlight on Amber Teething Necklaces

Sunlight can have a significant impact on amber teething necklaces, especially when exposed for prolonged periods. Just like any other material, amber is susceptible to the damaging effects of sunlight, which can cause the necklace to become brittle, change color, and lose its luster.

To prevent these undesirable effects, it is essential to store your amber teething necklace away from direct sunlight. By taking this simple precaution, you can help preserve your necklace’s appearance and effectiveness in providing teething relief for your baby.

Alternative Methods for Relieving Teething Pain

While amber teething necklaces have been praised for their soothing effects on teething babies, it’s essential to be aware of alternative methods for relieving teething pain. Some of these alternatives can be safer and more effective pain relief than amber teething necklaces.

Whether you’re considering using amber teething necklaces or trying other methods, it’s always a good idea to explore all available options to find the most suitable solution for your baby’s teething pain. From cold items and chew toys to numbing gels and other remedies, there are numerous ways to help alleviate your baby’s discomfort.

Cold Items and Chew Toys

Cold items like frozen fruit, washcloths, or teething rings can help relieve teething pain for babies. Similarly, chew toys made from soft, non-toxic materials such as rubber, silicone, or cloth can help alleviate pain and discomfort.

When using cold items and chew toys, it is essential to ensure that they are hygienic, free of bacteria, and not too cold or hard for the baby.

Numbing Gels and Other Remedies

Numbing gels and other remedies such as teething tablets or natural oils can also help soothe teething pain. However, it’s crucial to consult a pediatrician before using these products, as some numbing gels may pose risks to your baby’s health.

By consulting with a professional, you can ensure that you’re choosing the safest and most appropriate option for your child.

Safety Precautions When Using Amber Teething Necklaces

Although amber teething necklaces have been lauded for their potential benefits with sore gums, it’s crucial to follow safety precautions when using them. Ensuring the proper necklace length and clasp type for an amber necklace, as well as adhering to supervision and sleep guidelines, can help minimize the risk of strangulation or choking when using amber necklaces.

By following these safety precautions, you can provide your baby with the soothing effects of amber teething necklaces while reducing any potential hazards. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the well-being of your child.

Proper Necklace Length and Clasp Type

Selecting the appropriate length (around 32 cm) and a secure clasp, such as a plastic screw clasp, can help avoid choking risks and inadvertent removal. Ensuring the necklace fits snugly around your baby’s neck without being too tight or too loose is essential for their safety.

It is important to check the necklace regularly to make sure it is secure and not too tight.

Supervision and Sleep Guidelines

Always supervise your teething baby while they wear the necklace and, as a safety precaution, remove it during sleep or naps to minimize the risk of strangulation or choking. By diligently following these guidelines, you can provide your baby with the potential benefits of amber teething necklaces while ensuring their safety.

Do I have to use an amber necklace to relieve my baby’s teething pain?

Using an amber necklace is not the only option to relieve a baby’s teething pain.

While some parents find them helpful, it is important to consider safety precautions and explore alternative methods. Instead of an amber necklace, you can try using an amber bracelet or baltic amber beads worn as an anklet. These provide the same therapeutic properties and analgesic effects without the risk of choking.

Additionally, you can soothe your baby’s teething discomfort by offering chilled teething rings or toys, gently massaging their gums with clean fingers, or using teething gels recommended by pediatricians. Always supervise your baby during teething remedies and ensure the safety of any item placed in their mouth. Consult with your child’s healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.

Why do some people claim amber teething necklaces are dangerous?

While thousands of parents rave about the health benefits of baltic amber jewelry, there have been concerns raised by some individuals regarding the safety of amber teething necklaces.

These concerns primarily stem from the potential risks associated with the use of necklaces on infants and the possibility of choking or strangulation hazards. While there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that amber teething necklaces may provide relief from teething discomfort, scientific research supporting their effectiveness is limited.

It is important to note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved or regulated amber teething necklaces as medical devices.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also does not recommend their use due to safety concerns and a lack of scientific evidence. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to exercise caution when considering the use of these necklaces and to prioritize the safety of the child.

For more information, you can refer to the FDA’s website on teething products: [https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-warns-about-safety-risks-teething-necklaces-bracelets-relieve-teething-pain-or-provide-sensory]

Additionally, the AAP provides guidelines on teething and safe teething practices: [https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/default.aspx]

It is important to consult with healthcare professionals for personalized advice and to make informed decisions regarding the use of teething remedies.

But it’s also worth pointing out that natural remedies in general due often get criticized by Western medicine and government agencies due to the lack of ability to regulate and profit off them the same way they do with pharmaceuticals.

That is not to say there are no risks with these necklaces or allopathic medicine in general as there certainly are, just as there is with more conventional medicines.

Summary

In conclusion, amber teething necklaces can be worn in water, but it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially hot water and chemicals found in pools and soaps.

Proper care for amber teething necklaces after water exposure includes drying and cleaning to maintain their effectiveness and appearance. Moreover, it is essential to store the necklaces away from direct sunlight to prevent damage.

Although amber teething necklaces have been praised for their potential benefits with drooling and teething issues, it’s crucial to follow safety precautions and explore alternative methods for relieving teething pain. By doing so, you can ensure that your baby receives the best possible care and relief from their teething discomfort.

These alternatives are much safer for babies and toddlers, as amber teething necklaces can pose a choking hazard. Additionally, amber teething necklaces have not been proven to be effective in relieving teething pain.

What safety precautions should I follow when using amber teething necklaces?

Ensure your baby is supervised at all times while wearing the necklace, keep it a safe length away from their neck to reduce the risk of strangulation, and remove the necklace during sleep.

Always take extra precautions when using a baby necklace. Make sure it is securely fastened and not too tight. Check the clasp regularly to ensure it is secure and not loose. Inspect the necklace for any signs of wear and tear.

How do I know if my necklace is genuine baltic amber?

To determine if your necklace is made of genuine Baltic amber, the best way to verify is by following these steps.

  1. Visual Inspection: Authentic Baltic amber is typically lightweight and features natural imperfections such as small air bubbles and inclusions. Look for variations in color and transparency.
  2. Warmth Test: Rub the necklace vigorously between your hands to generate heat. Genuine Baltic amber has electrostatic properties and will attract lightweight materials like tiny paper pieces or hair.
  3. Scent Test: Authentic Baltic amber emits a subtle, pleasant scent when heated. If you gently heat the surface with your hand or warm water, you may detect a faint resinous aroma.
  4. UV Test: Under ultraviolet (UV) light, genuine Baltic amber may fluoresce with a distinct yellowish or greenish glow. This test is best conducted in a darkened room using a UV light source.

If you are still unsure about the authenticity of your necklace, it is advisable to seek the expertise of a reputable jeweler or amber specialist who can provide a professional evaluation.

Short Summary

  • Pacifiers can reduce the risk of SIDS but should be used with caution.
  • Choose a pacifier made from silicone or latex rubber in newborn size for a comfortable fit and successful use.
  • Introduce it to your breastfed baby carefully following recommendations from organizations such as AAPD & ADA.

Pacifier Advantages and Disadvantages

Pacifiers have long been used to provide comfort to infants, and according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, they have been shown that their use can significantly reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), particularly during sleep.

However, pacifier use is not without potential drawbacks. Prolonged use, especially after the age of three, can lead to dental and orthodontic issues. Furthermore, various studies have indicated a correlation between pacifier use and a heightened incidence of ear infections.

When considering the use of pacifiers for breastfed babies, it is important to ensure that the chosen pacifier does not interfere with successful breastfeeding.

Nipple confusion is a potential concern, as some breastfed babies may develop a preference for an artificial nipple over the real thing. To mitigate this issue, it is crucial to choose the best pacifiers for breastfed babies that support natural suckling behavior and foster a smooth transition between breastfeeding and pacifier use.

Choosing the Right Pacifier for Your Breastfed Baby

Selecting the right baby pacifiers involve considering factors such as material, size, and shape. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice.

  • Material: Pacifiers are typically constructed from silicone or latex rubber. Silicone is the more popular choice due to its durability and hypoallergenic properties.
  • Size: Opt for a newborn-sized pacifier to ensure a comfortable fit for your baby.
  • Nipple shape: Choose a pacifier with a shape that closely resembles a mother’s nipple. This can help prevent the pacifier from slipping out of the baby’s mouth.

By considering these factors, you can find the perfect pacifier for your breastfed baby.

It’s important to note that finding the perfect pacifier may involve some trial and error. Here are some steps to help you in your search:

  1. Try out 3-4 pacifiers from different brands.
  2. Observe your baby’s response to each pacifier and choose the one that they seem to prefer and feel most comfortable with.
  3. Remember to always have a spare of your baby’s favorite pacifier on hand.

Tips for Introducing a Pacifier to Your Breastfed Baby

Introducing a pacifier to your breastfed baby can be a delicate process. It is important to follow these steps.

  1. Choose the right time for the introduction, preferably when your baby is in a calm and content state, following a feeding session.
  2. Dip the pacifier in breast milk to make the new object more appealing to your baby.
  3. Try out different types of pacifiers to increase the chances of finding the perfect fit.

Remember to be patient and persistent during this process.

It may take multiple attempts for your baby to become accustomed to the pacifier, so don’t be discouraged if breastfed babies refuse it initially. Keep in mind that some breastfed babies may develop a preference for an artificial newborn over the real thing, so monitor your baby’s feeding patterns and discontinue pacifier use if it interferes with successful breastfeeding.

Common Pacifier Concerns and Solutions

One common concern with pacifier use is nipple confusion, where breastfed babies may develop a preference for an artificial nipple over the real thing.

To mitigate this issue, ensure that the chosen pacifier supports natural suckling behavior and fosters a smooth transition between breastfeeding and pacifier use. If your baby stops breastfeeding suddenly or has trouble latching, it’s best to discontinue pacifier use. Seeking advice from a pediatrician may be beneficial in such cases.

Another concern is when to stop using a pacifier.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children cease non-nutritive sucking habits (pacifier use) by three years of age or younger, while the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children should stop using a pacifier by the age of two.

To ensure proper oral development and minimize the risk of dental issues, it is essential to monitor your baby’s pacifier use and follow these recommendations.

How to Support Teens with Gender Identity Issues

I have 2 teen daughters who have struggled with gender identity. My oldest was labeling herself non-binary and frequently changing the pronouns she wants to be called, and my middle daughter previously identified as a boy. So how can I help my teen with gender identity issues?

Parents can help teens with gender identity issues by:

  1. Listen without judgment
  2. Love them unconditionally
  3. Providing them the facts about gender that they likely aren’t hearing on social media or from friends
  4. Get them counseling
  5. Be aware of signs of depression or possible self-harm

Parents should not blindly accept a change of gender, but also shouldn’t force them to be a certain way (and risk alienating them)

But it’s not really nearly that simple.

So in this article, we’ll look at the facts surrounding true gender dysphoria. And we’ll see how that differs from what’s really going on with today’s youth, which to me, seem obsessed with labels about both gender and sexual orientation.

And we’ll talk about some proven do’s and don’ts regarding what to do if this is happening in your house.

Think your daughter’s confusion is a sign of a bigger problem?

While gender confusion and self-discovery are common for teens, sometimes it’s something more and they may need professional help to work through this challenging time.

Luckily the folks over at PrideCounseling work with thousands of kids just like yours and mine.

Get matched with licensed therapists who specialize in working with teens who identify as part of the LGTBQ+ community. Let them know of the issues and signs you’re seeing. Once you approve, you connect them with your child for online therapy they can access right on a smartphone or computer.

And, of course, they’ll let you know if they sense anything serious.

teen gender identity issues lg

Is it normal for teens to struggle with gender identity?

It is becoming more and more popular and common for tweens and teens in recent years to obsess with gender labels and switch gender identities or pronouns. That doesn’t mean it’s normal, but it has become commonplace.

My teen daughters have dozens of friends and acquaintances collectively.

And I bet that easily 60% of them (all girls) now claim to be one of the following:

  • Gender fluid (they feel free to identify as one gender or the other at will)
  • Non-binary (they believe they are neither 100% one gender nor the other)
  • Agender (they don’t identify as any gender)
  • Cisgender (a person who identifies with the gender of their birth)
  • Demigender (only partially identify with one particular gender)

And a host of other made-up terms.

If I sound frustrated, it’s because I am. Gender isn’t something we choose. It’s something we are born with. And I don’t care if a man wants to love another man or a woman, or the same for women. But I don’t just get to wake up one day, switch my pronouns to they/them, and call myself gender fluid on a whim.

I’m a guy. And nothing I say will change that.

That by no means is to claim that there aren’t people out there with true gender dysphoria. There most definitely are people out there who were born into the body of one gender who truly feel the opposite gender on the inside.

But the actual instances of that are much fewer and further between than what we are currently seeing with teens at large today. More of that below.

Can non-binary be a phase?

Non-binary is a made-up term and has been discredited by the man who first claimed to be non-binary. So it is most definitely a phase and a trend that is not rooted in any real science or medical issue and can very much be a phase.

The danger, of course, is that the longer a teen (or adult) holds on to an image, the more likely it is to stick.

As they say, “fake it, ’till you make it”. And if you do something long enough, eventually you’ll believe it and won’t know the difference.

I had an interesting discussion the other day with my oldest daughter.

She was criticizing a woman named Oli London who identifies as “nonbinary Korean”. This woman even went so far as to have plastic surgery to make her look Korean. But she was born in England and is not of Korean ancestry.

My daughter was criticizing her claiming that “you can’t just decide you want to be a different race than what you were born”. I, of course, reminded her that really wasn’t all that different than deciding to be a different gender than what you were born.

I didn’t sway her with my logic, but it did give her something to think about.

Of course, going back a few years, we also had the case of Rachel Dolezal, the ex-NAACP leader who was white but “identified” as black.

They even created the term “transracial” to describe her.

In short, we are all born a certain way, and while we can empathize with a culture, race, gender that is different from our own, and even move to an area to indoctrinate ourselves with that cultural aspect, we don’t get to just switch from what we were born just because we feel like it.

Like Lady Gaga says we were “born this way”.

That doesn’t mean a man or woman can’t be androgynous or fluctuate their gender expression. But that doesn’t actually change their biological gender.

Is gender a social construct?

The concept of gender as a social construct is an increasingly accepted perspective, emphasizing the influence of societal and cultural factors on gender roles and expectations. However, it’s important to acknowledge that some individuals hold a different viewpoint more rooted in biological considerations.

From a biological standpoint, sex is typically determined by reproductive anatomy and genetic factors.

Critics argue that biological differences between males and females play a significant role in shaping gender identity, suggesting that gender is not solely a social construct.

While acknowledging the existence of biological differences, it is crucial to recognize that gender identity extends beyond biological sex. Many argue that gender encompasses a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. This perspective emphasizes that individuals’ self-perceived gender may not align with their assigned sex at birth.

It is essential to approach discussions on gender with respect and sensitivity, acknowledging the diverse range of perspectives and experiences. Recognizing the validity of diverse gender identities and promoting inclusivity remains crucial for creating a supportive environment for individuals across the gender spectrum.

For resources and information on supporting gender diversity and inclusivity, organizations such as The Trevor Project provide valuable insights and support for LGBTQ+ individuals due to their increased risk of suicide, mental health problems, and increased substance abuse.

Understanding and appreciating the complexities of gender, encompassing both sociocultural influences and biological considerations fosters a more inclusive and informed society that values and respects the diverse experiences and identities of individuals.

The biggest issue right now is that people who challenge ideas like “gender as a social construct” is more and more ostracized and based as bigots despite the actual science being in favor that gender is determined biologically.

So who invented the term non-binary?

James Shupe was the first person to use the term non-binary. He was physically and sexually abused as a child and first came out as trans in 2013, then non-binary in 2016. However, by 2019 he reverted to being male and has since called the term non-binary “psychologically harmful legal fiction.”

So non-binary was a term made up by a guy who was sexually abused and very confused.

It’s not a real term used by science or medicine. Shupe claims he was experiencing psychosis when he opted for the term non-binary and later felt he was pushed and encouraged by mental health professionals who were too concerned about political correctness and LGTBQ backlash if they didn’t 100% support his psychotic views.

So make no mistake. The guy who made up the term is very much opposed to the concept. And we, as caring parents, should be too. Read his whole story, in his own words, here.

That doesn’t mean we can’t love our kids, even if they do identify as non-binary.

But we can still love them and support them and disagree with them. And as parents, as always, it’s our job to educate them.

They may not agree with us. And they may even get mad or think we’re somehow bigoted (which we are not) for not buying into a made-up term that has since been disowned by the guy who created it.

But we can’t just hide our heads in the sand out of political correctness either.

What does it mean if my daughter is non-binary?

A daughter who is non-binary believes she is neither 100% male nor female. Technically it is part of the larger category of transgendered, although there are many trans people and non-binary people who reject that.

So it may mean that she sometimes dresses like a boy (not unlike what we called tomboys when I was a kid).

But other times, like my oldest daughter, she may wear fake eyelashes and tons of makeup. So it’s really all over the place. She may also reject the pronouns of her and she, favoring instead they/them.

Of course, some non-binary kids want hormone treatment and puberty blockers to chemically alter their feelings about their sexual identity.

As parents, it’s critical that we avoid doing that. Once they turn 18, they’re free to pursue that. But really up until the age of 25, their brains are still very much developing, and it’s tragic to alter teens’ natural development prior to that with chemicals or gender reassignment surgery.

But some misguided parents still persist in doing that.

Why are there so many labels now for gender and sexual orientation?

Tweens and teens are obsessed with labels for gender and sexual orientation. Essentially, they are coming up with labels for every possible variation that can be thought of, as it’s a way of feeling a part of something rather than feeling alone and isolated with the normal teenage hormonal confusion.

But in the days and years following 2020 and the lockdowns, it is also a way of controlling something when so much about our kids’ lives was totally out of their control.

I already covered some of the possible gender terms above kids these days are using. But again, those are:

  • Gender fluid (they feel free to identify as one gender or the other at will)
  • Non-binary (they believe they are neither 100% one gender nor the other)
  • Agender (they don’t identify as any gender)
  • Cisgender (a person who identifies with the gender of their birth)
  • Demigender (only partially identify with one particular gender)

And here are some of the sexual orientation terms also being thrown around:

  • Asexual (not being sexually attracted to anyone of any gender)
  • Bisexual (being attracted to both men and women)
  • Gay (men who are attracted only to other men)
  • Lesbian (women who are attracted only to other women)
  • Pansexual (kind of like bisexual, but they don’t believe there are just 2 genders)
  • Questioning (those who are undecided about their sexuality)

It’s enough to make your head spin!

Of course, when I was a kid there were men and women and gays, lesbians, and straights. That’s it. 5 terms. I didn’t know about trans back then, although certainly true gender dysphoria and hermaphrodites were around.

But the only excuse for how many labels there are today and how much the media and social media, in particular, is pushing this agenda is the obvious goal of destroying the so-called nuclear family.

That puts us as caring parents, in a crucial position. And we can’t just sit back and hope for the best.

Can gender confusion be a phase?

Gender confusion can be a phase unless it is a case of true gender dysphoria or hermaphroditism. The media, social media, and peer pressure at school all have an impact on teens’ ability to see themselves and their own views on gender and sexuality.

So it can very much be a phase during the teenage years that most young people will grow out of.

But as I said above, there’s also the issue of doing it for so long they don’t know how to go back without disappointing their friend group or feeling like a phony.

So we as parents have a crucial role.

We have to support them and love them unconditionally. But we also owe them to always be honest with them and to tell the truth. Just like when they were 4 and we worked with them on reading and spelling, we still have to educate them.

They just talk back more now. But we can’t stop just because it gets difficult or unpopular.

What is gender identity disorder?

Gender identity disorder, also known as gender dysphoria, is a term previously used to describe a psychological condition where an individual experiences distress or discomfort due to a significant incongruence between their gender identity and their assigned sex at birth.

It is important to note that this term has been updated in current medical literature to reflect a more affirming and accurate understanding of transgender experiences.

Gender dysphoria refers to the distress or discomfort that can arise from this incongruence, and it is now recognized as a medical condition by reputable medical organizations. It is essential to approach this topic with sensitivity and respect for individuals who may be experiencing gender dysphoria.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), published by the American Psychiatric Association, provides diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria. It emphasizes the importance of affirming and supportive approaches in helping individuals with gender dysphoria.

For more information and a comprehensive understanding of gender dysphoria, it is recommended to refer to reputable medical sources such as the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and their Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People. The WPATH website provides valuable resources: https://www.wpath.org/.

It is crucial to note that gender identity is a deeply personal and individual experience, and the understanding and acceptance of gender diversity have evolved over time. It is essential to respect and support individuals in their self-identified gender, and to use appropriate and affirming language when discussing this topic.

What are the signs of gender dysphoria?

Gender dysphoria refers to a condition where an individual experiences distress or discomfort due to a mismatch between their gender identity and the sex assigned at birth. While everyone’s experience is unique, there are common signs and symptoms associated with gender dysphoria. It’s important to note that only a qualified healthcare professional can diagnose gender dysphoria based on a comprehensive assessment.

Signs of gender dysphoria may include:

  1. Persistent discomfort: A persistent and strong desire to be of a different gender or the persistent belief that one’s assigned gender does not align with their true identity.
  2. Discontent with one’s body: Feelings of discomfort or distress related to primary and secondary sex characteristics, such as breasts or facial hair, that do not align with one’s gender identity.
  3. Preference for opposite gender roles: Strong identification with or preference for the gender roles, clothing, and activities typically associated with the gender opposite to the one assigned at birth.
  4. Social discomfort: Difficulties or discomfort in social situations that involve gender-specific expectations, such as using public restrooms or participating in gendered activities.
  5. Emotional distress: Feelings of anxiety, depression, or general emotional distress related to the incongruence between one’s gender identity and assigned gender.

It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional who specializes in gender identity issues for a proper diagnosis and guidance. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is a widely used resource for diagnosing gender dysphoria. More information can be found on the American Psychiatric Association’s website: https://www.psychiatry.org/

Remember, each person’s experience of gender dysphoria is unique, and it is essential to provide support, understanding, and respect for individuals who may be going through this journey.

How many people have gender dysphoria?

Approximately 1.7 million people on Earth have gender dysphoria. For men, that is 1 person out of every 3,800 people, and for women, that is 1 person out of every 5,200 people.

(source)

It’s also worth noting that that same study showed a 20% increase between 1980 and 2015.

But what it does mean, given most of us know maybe 100 people, is that no one reading this should know more than 1 person with a true gender identity issue.

And yet among my daughter’s friends, I can count a dozen probably.

That tells me that something else is going on aside from true gender dysphoria. It’s also interesting that the study showed a 20% increase from 1980. That’s not in total numbers which would make sense as the overall population increases.

No, that’s a 20% increase in the percentage of people who have it.

So why is it increasing rapidly? Well, as with autism rates, we don’t have a clear answer. We just have questions and conspiracy theories.

But what is true and undisputed is that our exposure to EDCs (Endocrine-disrupting chemicals) has risen significantly.

And a study published by the US National Library of Medicine showed that “high-level fetal exposures to known EDCs . . . is associated with gender-related effects”.

They go on to note that:

“These chemicals mimic hormones, and can disrupt differentiation and development in a wide variety of ways, by duplicating, exaggerating, blocking, or altering hormonal responses.”

And those exposed to “pesticides including DDT and DDE—have been shown to have been “feminized.”

For me, as someone who worked for 20+ years for Whole Foods Market and is naturally skeptical against chemicals and pesticides, this isn’t surprising.

But I bet it is for many of you. And remember, that study is published on a US government website; not some backwoods conspiracy nut’s website.

So what are EDC’s?

According to hormone.org, “Some EDCs act like “hormone mimics” and trick our body into thinking that they are hormones, while other EDCs block natural hormones from doing their job.”

Common places to find it which make their way into households every day include:

  • DDT (pesticide banned worldwide in 2004)
  • Glyphosate (sprayed on non-organic wheat)
  • Atrazine (sprayed on non-organic corn)
  • BPA (used in plastic wrap and plastic bottles)
  • Perfluorochemicals (used in microwave popcorn bags)
  • Triclosan (used in some toothpaste and anti-bacterial soap)
  • Phthalates (used in body care products and sunscreen)

So as you can see, many of us use these products every day.

But what is the role, if any, these products and our increasing use of them, have on the fact that our teens are now more and more obsessed with gender labels, changing genders, and altering their natural biological existence?

Again, questions but no real answers. But good food for thought.

Is gender dysphoria the same as gender confusion?

No. Gender dysphoria is not the same as gender confusion. Gender dysphoria refers to a medical condition where someone was truly born in the biological body of the opposite gender from what they truly feel. Gender confusion can come about from peer pressure, sexual assault or trauma, and social media pressure and can diminish over time.

So in short, someone with true gender dysphoria may feel from a very young age that they were supposed to be the opposite gender. And while they may self-medicate in adulthood to numb their pain, they don’t ever stop feeling that way.

And many, but not all, will take hormones and/or seek surgical treatments to transition to the gender they believe themselves to be.

Gender confusion, which is what is affecting many teens and tweens right now is more about wanting to fit in, not wanting to be ostracized, and buying into an agenda being pushed by the media and social media.

And while not all will grow out of this “phase”, many will.

Final thoughts

Ultimately I love my daughters no matter what they want to be called.

And no label or pronoun is going to change that. That being said, they are biologically girls. And unless someone was born intersex (what used to be called hermaphrodite), where portions of both sex organs are present at birth or has true gender dysphoria, gender is not actually fluid and you are either a boy or a girl.

If someone wants to call themselves the other, hey; it’s a free country.

But that doesn’t change reality. And I think when we as parents and the media try and alter that reality for the sake of political correctness, we’re really doing our kids a huge disservice.

We can hold to what we know is true and love our kids unconditionally at the same time. Remember, unconditional love doesn’t mean we have to agree with everything they believe.

Breastfed babies have different sensitivities from bottle-fed babies. As a result, not every transition cup will be well-received. So, here’s how to find the best sippy cups for breastfed babies.

The best sippy cups for breastfed babies are BPA-free, easy on the gums with soft spouts or can easily transition to a built-in straw, are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning, have easy-grip sides or handles, and offer spill-resistant lids.

I had my 3rd child in late 2017 and Layla (my 3rd daughter) was breastfeeding beyond her first birthday. I tried a bunch of cups. Some spill all over the place. A few are too challenging for her to figure out and ultimately it’s been frustrating.

Bottle-fed babies often take to sippy cups more easily, whereas breastfed babies can take longer to adapt. But the right sippy cup will get your breastfed baby everything they need for hydration while giving you the peace and quiet you’ve been craving. They are affordable, safe, and likely to work for you and the baby.

No matter which sippy cup you select, make sure to get a quality cleaning kit so you can make sure the cup is clean and germ-free for your little one!

What is a sippy cup?

A sippy cup is a special type of training cup designed for toddlers who are transitioning from bottles or breastfeeding to drinking from a regular cup.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what a sippy cup is:

  • Design: Sippy cups typically have a spill-proof lid with a spout or straw, making it easier for young children to drink independently.
  • Materials: Sippy cups are commonly made of BPA-free plastic, but options with stainless steel or silicone components are also available.
  • Transition: The purpose of a sippy cup is to help toddlers learn to drink from a cup without spilling or needing constant assistance.
  • Spill-Proof: Sippy cups feature a spill-proof mechanism, such as a valve or seal, that helps prevent liquid from spilling out even if the cup is tipped or dropped.
  • Handles: Many sippy cups have handles on the sides, allowing toddlers to hold and grip the cup more easily.
  • Age Range: Sippy cups are typically recommended for children aged 6 months to 2 years, depending on their developmental stage and readiness.
  • Cleaning: Sippy cups should be easy to disassemble and clean thoroughly. Look for cups that are dishwasher safe or have parts that can be easily hand-washed.
  • Gradual Transition: As children become more proficient in using a sippy cup, parents can gradually transition to a regular cup without a lid.
  • Benefits: Sippy cups promote independence, hand-eye coordination, and oral motor skills development in toddlers.
  • Variety: There are many different brands, styles, and sizes of sippy cups available, allowing parents to choose the one that best suits their child’s needs and preferences.

Remember, while sippy cups can be helpful during the transition phase, it’s important to eventually introduce regular cups to promote healthy oral development and drinking habits in children.

But cups aren’t the only thing breastfed babies can be picky about!

Pacifiers can be tricky too! So in a recent article, I walk you through all the best pacifiers for breastfed babies. And I even cover whether the American Academy of Pediatrics says pacifiers help or hurt with SIDS prevention!

Which sippy cup is best for a breastfed baby?

Ultimately, while we’ve listed out our top 7 favorites below, the one we think is the very best sippy cup for breastfed babies is this one:

NUK Simply Natural Learner Cup (click to see the current price on Amazon)

Virtually all sippy cups have mixed reviews. I know when we’re buying stuff we all love to read reviews and pick the ones closest to 5 stars.

But with sippy cups, we’re faced with a tough crowd of sleep-deprived moms and dads with a newish baby. In other words, parents of babies and toddlers are naturally pretty picky and critical when it comes to stuff for their baby.

In that regard, it was pretty tough finding sippy cups with decent reviews (but we did). But out of all the ones we looked at and reviewed, one stands out above the rest.

Here’s what we (and other parents) LOVE about the NUK cup:

  • Spill-proof
  • BPA-free
  • Easy-grip design, with anti-slip handles
  • Safe for the baby and easy to clean by hand or by the dishwasher
  • Attractive colors and patterns
  • Soft spout, easy for the gums

It is designed for babies 6 months and older.

So let’s list each of the  . . .

Middle Class Dad best sippy cups for breastfed babies Middle Class Dad OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup in teal

If biting is a natural thing for your baby, this sippy cup is exactly what you needed, as the child needs to bite the straw to open it and drink.

Many other sippy cups share this feature, but some parents complain their children do not get the biting idea. BUT the OXO Tot Transition Cup (click to see the current price on Amazon) a great way to keep the juice or water from spilling all over the place!

In other words, observe your child’s behaviors and preferences before you buy any sippy cup.

Our favorite features:

  • Soft, comfortable, non-slip grip and removable handles so you can teach your child more control related to drinking
  • Spill-proof straw
  • Almond-shaped sippy cup makes dropping harder;
  • It comes with measurement markings, a feature seldom shared by other sippy cups
  • The hinged cap allows you to close it to create a leak-proof seal

If you listen to other parents, you should skip all sippy cups altogether and go for this one, as a six month old can get the idea in two minutes.

However, if you still breastfeed the little one, you should reconsider, because breastfeeding and straw biting do not go well together, for obvious reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should a breastfed baby start using a sippy cup?

Typically at age 6 months is when most babies are ready to start using a sippy cup. Breastfed babies, however, especially if they are still breastfeeding, may not adapt quite as quickly as bottle-fed babies. But anywhere in the 6-9 month range is about right for babies to start using sippy cups.

In a recent study by the Pediatrics Journal, they found that 9 months is the optimal age for switching a baby from a bottle (whether formula or breast milk) to a sippy cup.

In their study, they noted that parents who switched their kids from bottle to sippy cup over a 7-day stretch were 60% less likely to have a toddler still using a bottle by the time they were 2 years of age.

Generally speaking, the longer you wait to transition your child away from a bottle to a sippy cup, the more challenging the transition.

Have a gassy baby?

There’s nothing worse for your baby (and you) than a poor night’s sleep! And a baby with bad gas can lead to a lot of sleepless nights! Luckily, in a recent article, I walk you through the best sleeping positions to try if you have a gassy baby.

Just click that link to read it on my site.

Can you put formula in a sippy cup?

As a general rule, you can put ANY liquid in a sippy cup, including formula or breast milk.

However, because kids tend to walk around with sippy cups for an extended time, it’s generally best to mainly put water in the sippy cup to avoid the tooth decay that can come from the pooling of sugars present in milk and formula.

After all,  while it’s naturally occurring, milk still contains sugars. Formula and especially juice or soda also have the same issue.

Other substances other than water also require more frequent cleaning and things like breast milk or formula need to be discarded after a relatively short time because of bacteria growth.

But yes, if you have transitioned away from the bottle but your child is still on formula or breast milk, you can put them in a sippy cup.

Just make sure to monitor the time and clean it out accordingly.

Best sippy cup for 6-month-old breastfed baby

The best sippy cup for a 6-month-old-baby is the NUK 5 oz. Simply Natural Leaner cup which is spill-proof. It features a soft spout that is gentle on teeth & gums. It also has easy-to-grip handles that are removable allowing you to continue using it as your child grows.

CLICK HERE to see it on Amazon.

At 6 months, your baby is in that transition stage. They can grasp stuff, but they drop a lot. So if you’re looking to add a sippy cup to breastfeeding, or move away from breastfeeding, finding a spill-proof cup is essential.

But the handles are removable, so no need to toss this one as they get a little older. But, you also need one that’s gentle on the gums as this is when they start getting their teeth in.

My pick for the best sippy cup for a 6-month-old breastfed baby? As I mentioned, it’s the . . .

The NUK Simply Natural Learner Cup  (click to see the current price on Amazon) is inexpensive with some of the best reviews out there of any sippy cup.

What I like the best:

  • Spill-proof
  • BPA-free
  • Easy-grip design, with anti-slip handles
  • Safe for the baby and easy to clean by hand or by the dishwasher
  • Attractive colors and patterns
  • Soft spout, easy for the gums

Thousands of near 5-star reviews can’t be wrong and it’s well under $10.

What if my child refuses a sippy cup?

If a baby refuses a sippy cup, remove the spout restrictor, slowly introduce the sippy cup while continuing to breastfeed some, use a straw with the cup, and play a game where a favorite stuffed animal pretends to drink from the sippy cup.

First off, just know that all babies are different, and while many babies transition within a week, others take longer. Just because your child refuses a sippy cup doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong.

Also, know that it’s also OK to NOT use a sippy cup and just go right to regular cups with lids and straws if you wish.

Here are some proven strategies in greater detail that can help them transition:

  • Remove the spout restrictor – Some sippy cups have flow restrictors designed to make them more spill-proof. While we parents appreciate that, sometimes they restrict the flow so much the baby gets frustrated that nothing is coming out
  • Go half and half during the transition week – If you are weaning a baby off a bottle (even with breastmilk in it) try doing half their feedings with the bottle or breast during your transition week and the other half with the milk in the sippy cup
  • Put a little breast milk on the spout – Assuming your baby has been breastfed (which is what this article is geared for) it stands to reason they know and love the flavor of breast milk. So putting a little on the spout is a great way to get them more comfortable with it since it will taste familiar
  • Try a sippy cup with a straw – Babies learn to master straws pretty quickly, so if they are having a hard time with a sippy cup with a spout, try one with the built-in straw
  • Have a favorite stuffed animal pretend to drink from the cup – My daughter has a ton of stuffed animals she carts around with her anywhere. Anytime I want to get her to do something new, if I have one of her stuffed animals do it first and make it look fun, she’s MUCH more apt to want to do it
  • Try it yourself – Along those same lines, kids naturally want to do EVERYTHING they see us do (which is why our behavior matters so much). So let them see you drinking from the sippy cup and they may want to join in.

When should a child stop using sippy cups?

According to Cherilyn Cecchini, MD, a board-certified pediatrician and GoodRx contributor:

“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends fully transitioning away from baby bottles and using cups by the time your child reaches 24 months of age.”  “Sippy cups can serve as a good in between when making this transition from bottle to open cup.”

So just plan to phase them out as they get close to their 2nd birthday.

Final thoughts

In this post, we looked at the best sippy cups for breastfed babies.

Not every sippy cup is right for every baby and babies who are breastfed don’t always take to pacifiers, bottles and sippy cups easily. A happy child is always a happy parent, so choose one of these sippy cups and you’ll be well on your way! Any tips, suggestions or questions on the best sippy cups for breastfed babies?

What is the Best Time to Visit Disneyland in October (2024)

Are you ready for a spooktacular Disneyland adventure this October? With Halloween festivities in full swing and pleasant weather conditions, it’s no wonder October is a popular month to visit the Happiest Place on Earth. But is Disneyland busy in October?

In October, to avoid large crowds at Disneyland, plan to attend during weekdays rather than weekends. Later in October is generally preferable to early in the month, but avoid the weekend prior to Halloween as well as October 30th. Halloween itself tends to be less crowded.

October at Disneyland Resort: What to Expect

October is a fantastic time to plan your Disneyland trip, with Halloween season in full effect and the park adorned with delightful decorations.

The combination of thrilling Halloween-themed attractions and the comfortable Southern California weather make it an ideal month to plan your Disney vacation, whether you choose to visit Disneyland Resort or explore Disney World.

And since there are no official school holidays in October (usually), it’s one of the best months to go.

However, the popularity of the season can also lead to larger crowds, so it’s essential to plan ahead and make the most of your visit.

Halloween Season Highlights

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park go all out during the Halloween season, offering special events and attractions that you won’t want to miss.

One of the most popular events is the Disney Halloween Party, also known as the Oogie Boogie Bash, a separately ticketed event that takes place on select nights in October at Disney California Adventure. The event features exciting entertainment, unique character meet and greets, and the opportunity for guests to wear their Halloween costumes.

Another must-see attraction during October is the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, where the classic Haunted Mansion ride is transformed with a Nightmare Before Christmas theme. This unique experience is available from early September through January, so be sure to catch it during your October visit.

Weather Conditions in October

When visiting Disneyland in October, expect to enjoy generally mild and pleasant weather conditions.

With an average high temperature around 76°F and lows around 63°F, it’s the perfect time for a Disney vacation. The comfortable weather allows you to fully immerse yourself in the park’s magical atmosphere without worrying about extreme heat or cold.

Keep in mind that while daytime temperatures can still be warm, the evenings can get cooler, so it’s a good idea to bring layers to accommodate the fluctuating temperatures. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, as Southern California is known for its sunny days, even in October.

Overall, the good weather conditions in October contribute to a delightful Disneyland experience.

Factors Affecting Disneyland Crowd Levels in October

As with any popular destination, there are certain factors that can impact crowd levels at Disneyland during October. To make the most of your visit, it’s essential to understand these factors and plan accordingly.

In this section, we’ll explore the impact of fall breaks, the Oogie Boogie Bash, and Magic Key passholders on Disneyland’s crowd levels in October.

Fall Break Schedules

One factor that can contribute to increased crowds in October are fall break schedules for schools in neighboring states. As families take advantage of this time off from school, they often plan trips to Disneyland, leading to larger crowds during these periods. To better prepare for your visit, consult the Disneyland crowd calendar to avoid peak times.

To navigate the crowds during fall break, consider utilizing Genie+ and Lightning Lane services, planning your visit on less busy days, and taking advantage of rope-dropping and park hours.

Oogie Boogie Bash Party Nights

The Oogie Boogie Bash is another factor that can contribute to larger crowds during October. This popular Halloween event takes place on select nights throughout the month, drawing in additional guests looking to celebrate the season.

If you’re planning to attend the Oogie Boogie Bash, be prepared for larger crowds, especially in Disney California Adventure Park. To make the most of your Oogie Boogie Bash experience, arrive early and wear comfortable shoes to ensure you can fully enjoy the event.

If you’re feeling extra festive, you can even wear a costume to get into the Halloween spirit, but be sure to follow Disneyland’s costume guidelines for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Magic Key Passholders

A Disneyland Magic Key is a new annual pass program introduced by Disneyland Resort.

It provides passholders with various benefits and access to the theme parks throughout the year. The Magic Key program replaced the old Annual Passholder program, which was discontinued. While both programs offer admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park, there are notable differences.

The Magic Key program offers a tiered system with different levels of access, blackout dates, and discounts.

Passholders can make park reservations in advance and enjoy exclusive perks. The program also includes a reservation-based model to manage park capacity. The changes aim to provide more flexibility, manage crowds, and enhance the overall guest experience.

Magic Key passholders, particularly local residents, can also impact crowd levels at Disneyland during October. These passholders often visit the park during the mornings and evenings, taking advantage of their exclusive access during less busy times of the day.

To help plan your visit around Magic Key passholder attendance, consider consulting the Magic Key Blackout Calendar, which shows when these passholders are not able to visit the park.

Do they still have Magic Hours or Magic Mornings?

Currently, those programs, which allowed multi-day ticket holders to arrive prior to the park opening and gain access to a limited number of rides, are on hold.

As of the time of this writing, the only program available is Early Entry at Disneyland. And that is for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests only

Tips for Navigating Disneyland Crowds in October

To make the most of your Disneyland visit in October, it’s essential to have strategies in place for navigating the crowds. In this section, we’ll discuss the benefits of utilizing Genie+ and Lightning Lane services.

Planning your visit on less busy days can also help you avoid crowds. Taking advantage of rope dropping and park hours can also be beneficial.

Utilizing Genie+ and Lightning Lane Services

Genie+ and Lightning Lane services, along with park hopper tickets, are fantastic tools for reducing wait times at popular attractions during busy October days. These services allow you to bypass the standby line on select attractions and access unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads.

To use Genie+ and Lightning Lane services effectively, plan ahead and purchase your party ticket in advance, arrive early to the park, and familiarize yourself with the Genie+ system before your visit.

Genie+ replaced the old FastPass system.

Planning Your Visit on Less Busy Days

When planning your October Disneyland visit, consider scheduling your trip during less busy days.

The best days to visit Disneyland Resort in October are typically Mondays and Wednesdays, followed by Tuesdays and Thursdays. By visiting during these less busy days, you can enjoy shorter wait times for attractions and a more relaxed atmosphere.

To further enhance your experience during the best time to visit, arrive early in the morning when the park is less crowded. This will allow you to enjoy popular attractions with minimal wait times and ensure you have a magical experience.

Rope Dropping and Park Hours

Rope dropping, or arriving at the park before it officially opens, is a great strategy for experiencing popular attractions with shorter wait times. By being among the first guests in the park, you can take advantage of the lower crowd levels during the early morning hours.

Park hours in October typically see the park opening at 8:00am and closing at 10:00pm. By familiarizing yourself with the park hours, you can plan your visit accordingly, ensuring you have ample time to experience all the attractions and festivities that Disneyland has to offer during your October visit.

Special Disneyland Events and Attractions in October

In addition to the Halloween festivities, there are several special events and attractions unique to October that you won’t want to miss. The Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay and the plethora of Halloween-themed food and merchandise throughout the park are sure to make your visit extra special.

From spooky decorations to special treats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at theme parks. Whether you’re looking for a frightening adventure or a fun family outing, Disneyland is the perfect place to celebrate the season.

Haunted Mansion Holiday Overlay

The Haunted Mansion Holiday is a must-visit if you’re visiting in October. It features a Nightmare Before Christmas theme, making it a popular attraction. This unique experience sees the classic Haunted Mansion ride transformed with beloved characters from the film and a festive holiday atmosphere.

The overlay begins in early September and runs through January, so make sure to catch it during your October visit to Disneyland.

Halloween-Themed Food and Merchandise

Disneyland offers a variety of Halloween-themed food and merchandise throughout the park during October. You’ll find mouth-watering treats such as pumpkin cheesecake, Mickey bat cookies, and Cookies & Candy Sundaes, perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

In addition to the festive food offerings, Disneyland also has a wide selection of Halloween-themed merchandise available. From t-shirts and hats to mugs and pins, there’s something for everyone to commemorate their spooktacular visit to the park during October.

Preparing for Your Disneyland October Visit

As you plan your Disneyland visit in October, it’s important to prepare for the unique experiences that await. Packing appropriate clothing and accessories for the fluctuating temperatures, as well as considering costume tips for the Oogie Boogie Bash, will ensure a worry-free and enjoyable vacation.

Layering is key for cooler evenings, and a light jacket or sweater is recommended. For the Oogie Boogie Bash, costumes are encouraged, and guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Disney characters.

Clothing and Accessories

When packing for your October Disneyland visit, be sure to bring layers for the varying temperatures. Shorts or capris, t-shirts, tank tops, light jackets, or sweatshirts are all suitable options for daytime and evening wear. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll be walking around the park for hours on end.

Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for those sunny California days. Bringing a small backpack or bag to store your belongings can also provide added convenience during your visit.

Oogie Boogie Bash Costume Tips

If you’re attending the Oogie Boogie Bash, you’ll likely want to wear a costume to fully embrace the Halloween spirit. When planning your costume, be sure to adhere to Disneyland’s costume guidelines and prioritize comfort for a night of fun.

In addition to following the guidelines, consider the weather when planning your costume. Opt for materials that are breathable and comfortable to wear throughout the event. With a little creativity and preparation, you’ll be sure to have a spooktacular time at the Oogie Boogie Bash!

Summary

In conclusion, visiting Disneyland in October promises a magical experience filled with Halloween festivities, unique attractions, and unforgettable memories.

On the plus side, Disneyland is one of the smallest Disney parks.

But that can also mean a large number of people in a smaller space compared to Walt Disney World. But I do love the fact that you can walk from Disneyland to California Adventure given Disney World is so large and spread out that you have to use transportation between parks.

By planning your visit with the tips and information provided in this blog post, you can navigate the park with ease and make the most of your enchanting Disneyland adventure.

Top 10 Recent Disney Movies for Toddlers

When it comes to (somewhat) recent Disney movies, there are 10 films that stand out as particularly delightful for toddlers. With a combination of fun animated characters, catchy songs, and lovable animals, these Disney films provide an enjoyable experience for young children.

Some of these movies include The Lion King, Beauty, and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story (all 4), Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, Moana, Frozen I and II, The Princess and the Frog, and Ratatouille.

Each of these films offers a unique and engaging experience that will keep your little ones captivated and entertained.

1. The Lion King (animated version only)

Who can forget the memorable characters and captivating story of The Lion King?

This classic Disney movie follows the life of Simba, a young lion who learns about responsibility and courage while trying to reclaim his kingdom from the treacherous Scar. With iconic voice talents like James Earl Jones and catchy songs such as “Hakuna Matata,” The Lion King has become a favorite among many generations.

As one of the first Disney movies many of us watched as kids, it holds a special place in our hearts and is sure to delight your own child as well.

To be fair, the new CGI-live action Lion King is great! But because the animals look real and due to its PG rating (the original is G), it may not be ideal for many toddlers.

2. Beauty and the Beast (animated version only)

Another timeless Disney film that captivates toddlers is Beauty and the Beast. This beautifully animated movie tells the enchanting story of Belle, a young woman who finds herself in a magical castle with a mysterious beast. As their friendship blossoms, Belle discovers the true meaning of inner beauty and the power of love.

With its heartwarming message and charming characters, Beauty and the Beast is a cute movie that will surely capture your toddler’s imagination and become one of their favorites.

As with the above-mentioned Lion King, the live-action Beauty and the Beast is also great. But let’s be honest, the cartoon beast is already a little too scary for some toddlers. The live-action even more so.

3. Aladdin (original version)

Adventure, romance, and magic await in the world of Aladdin.

This beloved Disney film follows the journey of a street-savvy young boy named Aladdin who discovers a magical lamp containing a powerful genie. With the help of his newfound friend, Aladdin embarks on a thrilling quest to win the heart of the beautiful Princess Jasmine and fulfill his dreams.

Not only is Aladdin a critical and commercial success, but its delightful characters and catchy songs make it one of the best Disney movies for toddlers to enjoy.

As with many remakes, the newer live-action version is PG as opposed to G, and could be too scary for some.

4. Toy Story (all 4)

The Toy Story franchise, brought to life by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, has captured the hearts of both children and adults alike. These delightful films follow the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and their toy friends as they face various challenges, learn valuable life lessons, and strengthen their bonds of friendship.

With its engaging storylines, endearing characters, and timeless messages, Toy Story is a fantastic choice for toddlers who will be entertained and inspired by these iconic animated films.

Now to be honest, Toy Story 1 is a little scarier and more adult than the others, particularly around the character Sid and his penchant for blowing up or torturing toys. But all are rated G.

5. Finding Nemo and Finding Dory

Dive into the underwater world of Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, where heartwarming stories of family, friendship, and self-discovery unfold. In Finding Nemo, Marlin, a clownfish, embarks on a courageous journey to reunite with his son Nemo, with the help of the unforgettable Dory, a blue tang fish with short-term memory loss.

Finding Dory, on the other hand, follows the lovable Dory as she sets off on her own adventure to find her long-lost family. These captivating films, filled with vibrant colors and lovable characters, are perfect for entertaining toddlers and teaching them the importance of perseverance and love.

6. Moana

Set sail with Moana, an inspiring Disney film that introduces a strong and independent heroine who breaks away from the traditional princess mold. The movie follows Moana, a young girl chosen by the ocean itself, as she courageously sets out to save her island and her people.

Along the way, Moana encounters the legendary demigod Maui and discovers her own inner strength and identity. With mesmerizing ocean and island backdrops, as well as unforgettable songs, Moana is a must-watch Disney movie for toddlers who will be captivated by this empowering tale.

7. Frozen I and Frozen II

The enchanting world of Frozen I and Frozen II has quickly become a favorite among young children. These magical movies follow the story of sisters Elsa and Anna as they navigate the challenges of love, family, and self-discovery.

With powerful messages about sisterhood and self-acceptance, as well as iconic songs like “Let It Go,” the Frozen franchise offers an unforgettable experience for toddlers who will undoubtedly fall in love with the characters and their extraordinary adventures.

And EVERY toddler loves Olaf!

8. The Princess and the Frog

Venture into the lively world of The Princess and the Frog, a Disney movie that combines classic fairy tale elements with a fresh and modern twist. This heartwarming story follows Tiana, a hardworking and ambitious young woman, as she unexpectedly finds herself transformed into a frog after a chance encounter with a prince under a magical spell.

As Tiana and Prince Naveen work together to break the curse, they learn important life lessons about love, friendship, and the value of hard work. With its engaging plot and delightful characters, The Princess and the Frog is a fantastic movie for toddlers who will be entertained by this magical tale.

9. Ratatouille

Ratatouille is a charming Disney movie that follows the adventures of Remy, a rat with a passion for cooking and an extraordinary sense of taste. Despite the odds against him, Remy teams up with a young chef named Linguini to pursue his dream of becoming a great cook.

This delightful film teaches valuable life lessons about determination, friendship, and the importance of not judging someone by their appearance. With its witty dialogue and engaging storyline, Ratatouille is an excellent choice for keeping toddlers entertained and inspired.

10. Tinkerbelle Movies

The Disney Tinkerbell movie series consists of several enchanting films that are perfect for toddlers. With a G rating, these movies are designed to be family-friendly and suitable for all ages.

Each film follows the adventures of Tinkerbell and her fairy friends, exploring magical worlds and teaching valuable lessons about friendship, bravery, and the power of believing in oneself. The colorful animation, catchy songs, and engaging storytelling captivate young audiences, providing entertainment while imparting positive messages.

  • Tinker Bell (2008)
  • Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009)

  • Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy (2014)
  • Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2015)

7 Classic Disney Movies for Toddlers

For a trip down memory lane, there are seven classic Disney movies that continue to delight and captivate toddlers. These timeless films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Jungle Book (1967 version), and The Aristocats, have entertained generations of children with their enchanting stories, endearing characters, and unforgettable songs.

Each of these classics offers a unique and engaging experience that will bring joy and nostalgia to both you and your little one.

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

As Disney’s first full-length animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs holds a special place in the hearts of many. This enchanting tale tells the story of a kind-hearted princess who finds refuge in the forest with seven lovable dwarfs after escaping the clutches of her wicked stepmother.

With its pioneering animation techniques, memorable characters, and iconic songs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a beloved classic that continues to captivate toddlers and adults alike.

Now to be fair, the wicked queen does get scary when she transforms into the old woman with the apple. So use your best judgment.

2. Bambi

Bambi is a heartwarming Disney movie that tells the story of a young deer as he grows up in the forest, learns important life lessons, and experiences love, loss, and friendship.

This timeless film offers a gentle introduction to the concept of death and provides an opportunity for parents and toddlers to discuss important topics such as grief and love in a meaningful and engaging way. With its beautiful animation and touching story, Bambi is a perfect choice for young children.

Of course (spoiler alert), Bambi’s mother dies, so do expect a few tears!

One thing I wondered for years was why do parents always die in Disney films?

Well, I looked into it and wrote an article about it. What really surprised me was the real-life tragedy in Walt Disney’s life that inspired the parents’ deaths in many of the Disney films.

Just click the link to read it on my site.

3. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Join Pooh and his friends in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, a delightful collection of stories that celebrate the timeless themes of friendship, love, and adventure.

These charming tales follow Pooh and his best friend Christopher Robin as they embark on whimsical adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood, learning valuable lessons about cooperation, teamwork, and the beauty of embracing differences.

With its lovable characters, enchanting storylines, and heartwarming messages, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a treasured classic that will captivate toddlers and inspire their imaginations.

4. Peter Pan

Embark on a magical journey to Neverland with Peter Pan, a Disney classic that introduces the enchanting world of a boy who never grows up and his captivating adventures with other children.

This timeless film encourages young viewers to recognize the benefits of growing up, taking on one’s place in adult society, and cherishing family relationships. With its exciting scenes, unforgettable characters, and inspiring themes, Peter Pan is a perfect choice for entertaining and educating toddlers.

To be fair, there are some racial stereotypes portrayed in the movie which is why it now comes with a disclaimer. That is particularly true of the offensive musical song titled, “What Makes the Red Man Red?”.

But we also have to remember the prevailing mindset of the era in which the movie was made (1953), and understand that the offensive will go unnoticed by most toddlers. But we can also use it as an educational opportunity for discussion.

5. Cinderella

Introduce your toddler to the magical world of Cinderella, a heartwarming Disney movie that tells the story of a young woman who, with the help of her fairy godmother, is able to attend a royal ball and find true love with Prince Charming. This enchanting film teaches valuable lessons about kindness, perseverance, and the power of a positive attitude, making it an ideal choice for young children.

With its delightful songs and lovable characters, Cinderella is a classic Disney movie that will surely capture your toddler’s heart. The Cinderella sequels are certainly toddler-appropriate. But they aren’t very good either. So if you’re watching with them, it might be best to skip them.

6. The Jungle Book (1967 version)

Venture into the wild with The Jungle Book (1967 version), a beloved Disney classic that follows the captivating story of Mowgli, a young boy raised in the Indian jungle by wolves, as he bravely attempts to escape the clutches of the man-eating tiger Shere Khan.

Along the way, Mowgli learns important life lessons about friendship, courage, and self-discovery, making The Jungle Book a timeless favorite for toddlers who will be enthralled by its exciting adventures and unforgettable characters.

As with other live-action remakes, I don’t recommend the new version of the Jungle Book for toddlers as the animals and some of their aggression, can be too much for our little ones.

7. The Aristocats

Whisk your toddler away to the charming world of The Aristocats, a delightful Disney movie that follows the adventures of a group of aristocratic cats as they navigate the ups and downs of life in high society.

With its catchy music, endearing characters, and heartwarming story, The Aristocats is a wonderful choice for toddlers who will be entertained by the antics of these lovable felines and their inspiring journey to find their place in the world.

The movie features a host of memorable characters, including the brave and loyal Thomas O’Malley, the elegant Duchess, and the mischievous kittens Marie, Berlioz, and Toulouse. With colorful animation, catchy songs, and positive messages about friendship and family, The Aristocats create colorful animations, catchy songs, and positive messages about friendship and family.

My (now 5-year-old) former toddler loves this movie so much she has not one, but two stuffed animals of the character Marie.

7 Modern Disney and Pixar Movies for Toddlers

For a taste of some of the latest and greatest Disney and Pixar films, there are eight modern movies that are perfect for entertaining and inspiring toddlers. These captivating films include Inside Out, Cars (all of them, but especially the first), Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Coco, The Little Mermaid (both versions), Encanto, and Raya and the Last Dragon.

Each of these movies offers a unique and engaging experience, showcasing the incredible storytelling and breathtaking animation that Disney-Pixar is known for.

1. Inside Out

Take a journey inside the mind with Inside Out, a groundbreaking Disney-Pixar film that explores the complex world of emotions and how they shape our lives. Centered around the emotions of a young girl named Riley, this movie offers an engaging and entertaining way for toddlers to gain a better understanding of their own feelings.

Inside Out features vibrant colors, delightful characters, and inspiring messages. Out is a perfect choice for helping young children navigate the ups and downs of their emotional world.

2. Cars (all of them but especially the first)

Rev up your engines and embark on an exciting journey with the Cars franchise, a series of action-packed Disney-Pixar films that follow the thrilling adventures of Lightning McQueen, a rookie race car who discovers the value of friendship and teamwork.

With engaging storylines, unforgettable characters, and heartwarming messages, the Cars movies are perfect for toddlers who will be captivated by the high-octane action and inspired by the powerful themes of camaraderie and personal growth.

I was personally less than thrilled with Cars II. But Cars III kind of got them back on track. But for sure the 1st Cars movie will be a big hit. The spin-off series called Planes, while cute, never really measured up. So only the die-hard fans need to go there.

3. Tangled

Unravel the captivating story of Tangled, a Disney film that reimagines the classic tale of Rapunzel with a modern twist. This enchanting movie follows the adventures of a young girl with magical hair who embarks on an incredible journey to discover the world beyond her tower and find her true family.

With its engaging plot, vibrant animation, and inspiring messages about courage and self-discovery, Tangled is a perfect choice for entertaining and enlightening toddlers.

Now I know they did a short film and TV show, but why did we never get a full-blown sequal????

4. Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet

Join the lovable video game character Ralph in Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet, two exciting Disney movies that explore themes of friendship, acceptance, and the impact of technology on our lives. In these action-packed films, Ralph sets out on thrilling adventures in the real world and the digital realm, learning valuable lessons about teamwork and self-worth along the way.

With their engaging storylines and inspiring messages, these movies offer a great introduction to technology and social media concepts for toddlers.

5. Coco

Experience the vibrant world of Coco, a heartwarming Disney-Pixar film that tells the story of a young boy named Miguel who embarks on a magical journey to the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather and uncover the truth about his family’s past.

With its stunning animation, unforgettable characters, and inspiring themes of family and cultural traditions, Coco is a perfect movie for toddlers who will be captivated by the colorful landscapes and touching story.

Now it is worth pointing out that Coco came out about 3 years after the lesser-known non-Disney film The Book of Life. And it seems too coincidental that both are so similar.

And in my opinion, The Book of Life, produced by Guillermo del Toro is the better choice. But both are great.

6. The Little Mermaid (both versions)

Dive into the enchanting underwater world of The Little Mermaid, a beloved Disney movie that follows the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human and finding true love. Whether it’s the original animated film or the live-action remake, both versions of The Little Mermaid captivate audiences with their inspiring messages about self-discovery, courage, and the power of love.

With its unforgettable songs and memorable characters, this movie is a must-watch for any toddler who dreams of exploring the wonders of the deep.

My 5-year-old loves both the original and the newer one.

But do bear in mind the 2023 version is way too long for many toddlers (2 hours and 15 minutes) and it’s rated PG as opposed to the original’s G-rating.

7. Encanto

The Disney film “Encanto” is an enchanting movie that is suitable for toddlers and the entire family to enjoy.

With a PG rating, the film offers engaging storytelling, vibrant animation, and memorable songs. Set in a magical Colombian town, “Encanto” follows the adventures of the Madrigal family and their unique abilities. The movie celebrates the importance of family, self-acceptance, and embracing one’s individuality.

While it may contain some mild action and thematic elements, it is appropriate for toddlers with parental guidance. “Encanto” provides a delightful and heartwarming experience for young viewers, introducing them to diverse cultures and positive messages in an entertaining and accessible way.

Making it a perfect choice for toddlers who will be captivated by the colorful animation, captivating story, and unforgettable characters.

Disney Movies to Approach with Caution

While there are many wonderful Disney movies that are perfect for toddlers, there are also a few films that may be better suited for older children or approached with caution. These movies include Dumbo (either version), Sleeping Beauty, Zootopia, and Raya and the Last Dragon.

Some would also likely put Pinocchio on the list for the scenes of kids smoking and the word “jackass” being used a few times

Each of these films contains content that may not be suitable for all toddlers, so it’s important for parents to carefully consider their child’s age and interests before introducing these movies into their family movie night lineup.

1. Dumbo (either version)

Dumbo, both the original and the more recent live-action remake, is a heartwarming story of family and friendship that features a lovable elephant protagonist with oversized ears. However, some scenes in both versions of the film may be too intense for very young children, such as the scene where Dumbo accidentally gets drunk or the dramatic circus fire.

As with Pinocchio and Peter Pan, the original (1941) also contains some racial stereotypes that are considered inappropriate by today’s standards. The remake from 2019 features some revealing clothing, and strong language. Both versions depict animal cruelty and violence.

Parents should use their discretion when deciding whether to introduce this film to their toddlers, keeping in mind their child’s sensitivity to certain themes and images.

2. Sleeping Beauty

While Sleeping Beauty is a classic that features a beautiful princess, a charming prince, and an enchanting fairy tale world, it also contains some frightening scenes that may not be suitable for very young children.

The villain, Maleficent, is particularly menacing, and the climactic battle between the prince and the dragon can be quite intense. Along those same lines, the live-action spin-offs centered around Maleficent (both great movies) are also likely too intense for toddlers.

Parents should consider their child’s age and sensitivity to scary content before introducing this film to their little ones.

3. Zootopia

I love this movie!!

Zootopia is an engaging Disney movie that explores themes of acceptance and understanding, making it a valuable film for older children to watch. However, some scenes in the movie may be too intense for very young children, such as a chase sequence involving a savage animal or the darker elements of the film’s mystery plot.

Parents should use their discretion when deciding whether to introduce this film to their toddlers, considering their child’s age and sensitivity to certain themes.

4. Raya and the Last Dragon

I also love this movie, and my then 4-year-old also loves it.

Raya and the Last Dragon is an action-packed Disney movie with a strong focus on courage and friendship. While this film may be engaging and inspiring for older children and adults, some of the action sequences and intense scenes may be too much for very young children.

Parents should carefully consider their child’s age and sensitivity to such content before introducing this film to their little ones.

Summary

In conclusion, there is no shortage of Disney movies that can captivate and inspire toddlers.

From recent blockbusters to timeless classics, these films offer a wide variety of engaging stories, lovable characters, and valuable life lessons for young viewers to enjoy.

While some Disney movies may be best suited for older children or approached with caution, the majority of these films provide a magical and unforgettable experience for the whole family. So gather your little ones, grab some popcorn, and embark on a magical journey through the world of Disney that will create memories to last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Disney movie to introduce a toddler?

The best Disney films to show your toddler first include The Jungle Book (1967 version), Frozen, Cars, and Toy Story 2.

Avoid showing toddlers under age 2 any Disney movies as their attention span will not likely sustain the film and some scenes may be too intense. But, the American Academy Of Pediatrics recommends toddlers under age 15 months not be shown any TV at all. (source)

Toddlers love animated movies.

They also love singing characters and talking animals. So right out of the gate that might seem like there are a lot of great choices for toddlers to watch.

Also, let’s review exactly what ages define the toddler years.

Toddlers are any child between 12 months and 3 years. At that point, they move to the pre-k category. Toddler, of course, refers to the fact that kids wobble and toddle a bit when they are first learning to walk.

The other thing to note is that toddlers’ attention spans are fairly short.

So it’s not uncommon for them to get bored and want to do something else long before a movie is done. So for that reason, it’s not usually a great idea to take them to the movie theatre. If you do, finding showtimes close to nap time work best.

That being said, my youngest daughter Layla, currently almost 6, sat through all of Toy Story 4 when it came out (she was almost 2) and loved it.

The other area where things get dicey is with kid movies that have scary scenes.

Snow White, for instance, scared my older daughters even when they were 5 and 6. The scene in Frozen with Marshmallow, the giant ice monster, used to really scare Layla when she was a little younger. She otherwise LOVES Frozen and is now past being scared.

The Ursula scenes in The Little Mermaid or the bear scenes in Brave could also be too scary for toddlers.

The best first movies for toddlers would be animated, on the short side, have songs, and a minimum of dark or scary things. Here are my suggestions, blending both Disney and Pixar:

  • The Jungle Book (1967 version)
  • Finding Nemo or Finding Dory
  • Cars
  • Toy Story 2
  • Frozen

What movies do 2 year olds like to watch?

Young children love fun and enjoyable stories! From ‘Finding Nemo’ to ‘The Peanuts Movie’, there is a wide range of animated movies that will delight your two-year-old.

Let the adventures begin!

What age is Dumbo 2019 suitable for?

The Dumbo remake of 2019 is rated PG and is not suitable for viewers under age 7. While some of the questionable content from the original Dumbo film is not in the new version, the film does feature minor incidents of nudity and profanity in addition to scenes too intense for younger viewers.

For example, the pink elephants are in the new version, but there’s no drunk Dumbo or hallucinations.

They also cut the song “Song of the Roustabouts” which was considered the most racist part of the original film. That original scene depicts black characters hammering railroad ties while putting up circus tents and calling each other “hairy apes”.

The bad news for Tim is that Rotten Tomatoes only gives it between 46%-51% for their critics and audience opinion.

The film is rated PG which vaguely means, according to the Motion Picture Association of America, “Some material may not be suitable for children. Parents urged to give “parental guidance”. May contain some material parents might not like for their young children.”

Lastly, the IMDB parents guide shows:

  • Sex & nudity – 2 instances
  • Profanity – 2 instances
  • Frightening scenes – 2 instances

So I would not recommend the new Dumbo for toddlers.

Is Moana suitable for a three-year-old?

Moana is rated PG, however, most parents will find it appropriate for a three-year-old. The PG rating comes from some intense scenes involving scary sea creatures. There is also some implied, but not fully vocalized profanity.

Overall, it’s a great movie and I have no real qualms with it. But there are some scenes that would be considered frightening for young kids.

There’s also a scene where Maui cuts off a sea creature’s arm and then the arm grows back.

Language-wise, you hear most of the phrase “son of a bitch”, and while the phrase gets cut off at the end, the whole phrase is clearly implied. There’s also a very scary lava monster as well.

Overall IMDB notes it has 6 “frightening & intense scenes” and the opening scene with Maui is scary as well before we learn that he’s friendly.

Ultimately while some parental guides I saw, say the film isn’t appropriate for kids 8 and younger, I would say it’s probably fine for 4 and above.

So Moana is questionable for toddlers. But I will say we watch it with my toddler and she loves it.

What age is appropriate for Lion King?

The original Lion King movie is appropriate for ages 3 and higher due to its G-rating, despite a few intense scenes such as the death of Mufasa. The Lion King remake from 2019 is rated PG, and not appropriate for viewers under age 6 due to more graphic scenes of animals fighting and being killed.

So, first off, we need to talk about both the original Lion King (rated G) or the 2019 version (rated PG).

The animated version from 1994 is a Disney classic. While Mufasa, Simba’s dad, does get killed in the opening scene, it’s sad, not gory.  Scar and the hyenas are a little scary.

But much of the film is fun, light-hearted, and often centered around the hilarious antics of Timon and Pumbaa, the meerkat and warthog duo that sing “Hakuna Matata“.

I would absolutely say the original Lion King is totally appropriate for all ages, including toddlers.

The new Lion King, however, as I mentioned, is PG.

While it is technically animated, it’s all CGI, so it looks like real animals (just ones that talk and sing). The film technically tells the same story, but the fact that it looks real gives it an altogether different feel.

The parental guide on IMDB notes mostly “violence and gore”.

Specifically, those scenes are:

  • Scar (the bad guy) slashing open and eating a gazelle
  • A lion’s bloody chin following a meal
  • Scar throwing Mufasa to his death
  • Fighting lions clawing and biting other animals

As I said, technically those scenes are in the original, but looking realistic due to the CGI makes the scenes more intense.

Personally, I think no younger than 6 for the new version of the Lion King; definitely not toddlers.

Is Tangled good for toddlers?

Tangled is appropriate for toddlers. This film, which tells the story of Rapunzel, is rated PG due to the frequent use of frying pans as a weapon, and a few slightly scary characters. But the addition of a cuddly chameleon named Pascal and heartfelt songs will endear this film to most toddlers.

My whole family, including my now 5-year-old, loves Tangled!

Many movie review sites list it for ages 5 and up, and it is rated PG for the cartoon-ish violence with frying pans. In most cases, the violence is on par with Looney Tunes slapstick than it is scary.

My little one also loves the songs and Pascal the chameleon who constantly changes colors.

Mother Gothel is a little scary-looking, especially when she ages, and of course, she isn’t really Rapunzel’s mother but, in fact, a kidnapper.

The only other thing of possible concern is the Snuggly Duckling tavern where lots of rowdy men are drinking steins of what I assume is beer.

But most of the movie, storylines, and scenes are not done in an overtly scary or adult manner. Honestly, the adult content that is there is so subtle it will go right over any kid’s head.

So I vote yes for Tangled!

Can Kids Eat Food Cooked with Wine? [Cooking Alcohol 101]

I have a toddler who loves to eat, and I do occasionally make recipes that call for wine to be cooked with the food. So I’ve wondered can toddlers eat food cooked in wine?

Food that has been cooked with wine (or beer) for 90 minutes or more is perfectly safe to give to toddlers. Contrary to popular belief, all alcohol does not cook off when cooked and some methods leave up to 85% of the alcohol remaining. But avoid giving young children food cooked with liquor.

But there’s a great deal more to know about cooking with wine (or beer) and does the alcohol cook out. So we’ll explore if it cooks out and if so, how long and high of a temp that takes.

I’ll also take a look at whether there’s any difference between white and red wine and cooking wine, what the most appropriate cooking methods for making sure the alcohol dissipates, and we’ll talk about some non-alcoholic substitutes if you prefer to go that route.

That way, you can rest easy knowing your kids aren’t accidentally ingesting alcohol.

Let’s get going!

Table of Contents:

Does wine cook out of food?

Not fully is the short answer.

Most of us, myself included have long heard the urban myth that cooking removes alcohol. Most people have never questioned that either.

But it’s not really accurate. Traces of alcohol do remain by the end of the cooking process.

Back in the ’90s, the Nutrient Data Lab, which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a study titled “Alcohol retention in food preparation”.

In that study, they used 6 different recipes and cooking methods to test the theory. As you can see in their chart, some recipes like pot roast only had 4-6% of the alcohol left when serving.

But a Grand Marnier sauce, by comparison, which had the alcohol added to the sauce mix at 195° degrees, retained up to 85% of the alcohol; not what you want for your toddler!

So how much alcohol remains? Check out their handy chart.

So what accounts for the differences in alcohol retention?

The study found that the type of heat used made all the difference.  Simmering seemed to produce the best results. So if you’re making a fancy dinner with a wine reduction sauce or pasta sauce that has been simmered for hours, you’re likely going to be just fine.

Pot roast is a great example of that having been simmered for 2 1/2 hours.

The oysters, on the other hand, were baked a higher temperature, but for far less time with much less direct heat. So it makes sense that they still retained almost half the alcohol of when the dish started cooking.

But as the study concludes, “the assumption that all alcohol is evaporated when heat is applied during cooking is not valid.”

The factors they found that influence alcohol cooking off the most include:

  • Type of heat source
  • Lighting the alcohol on fire results in much smaller alcohol loss
  • The type of cooking vessel (pot, pan, etc) can also affect alcohol loss
  • An alcoholic beverage with a higher alcohol content

So if you are cooking with alcohol and planning on feeding it to your toddler or other kids, pay close attention to those things! Some alcohol cooks out, but certainly not all. And in some cases, a large percentage of it remains.

How long should you boil wine to remove the alcohol?

As a general rule, when boiling regular wine on the stovetop, it takes about 30 minutes for the alcohol to cook off.

Alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water. The boiling point of alcohol is 186.8°, compared to water which boils at 212°. Technically, products can be considered non-alcoholic when the alcohol content reaches .5%. So how long does that take?

Well as we learned in the above section, that depends on the heat source, cooking time, and a few other factors.

This handy chart courtesy of the US Department of Agriculture may help in getting you some answers though for other cooking methods and how much alcohol remains:

Alcohol Burn-off Chart – US Dept of Agriculture
Preparation Method Percent Retained
alcohol added to boiling liquid & removed from heat 85%
alcohol flamed 75%
no heat, stored overnight 70%
baked, 25 minutes, alcohol not stirred into mixture 45%
Baked/simmered dishes with alcohol stirred into mixture:
15 minutes cooking time 40%
30 minutes cooking time 35%
1 hour cooking time 25%
1.5 hours cooking time 20%
2 hours cooking time 10%
2.5 hours cooking time 5%

To be totally safe when cooking foods with wine, have the end of the cooking time be at least 2 hours. Make sure to add the wine at the start of that to ensure only a trace of alcohol remains by the end of cooking.

Thinking about a Crock-Pot?

The slow cooker’s lower temperatures mean it will take a LOT longer for alcohol to burn off. Plus when you have the lid locked, there’s nowhere for that steam (which will have a trace of alcohol) to go.

So personally, I would only do this in a slow cooker if I was doing something like chili overnight for several hours and not using that much alcohol to begin with.

Can you use wine as a basting liquid when feeding kids?

Basting is when you pour a liquid over meat while it is cooking. So an example might be pouring small amounts of white wine, every 15 minutes, on a whole chicken you are roasting in the oven.

Since this is largely running off the food and into the pan, as long as you stop doing that for the last hour of cooking, you will be just fine.

And if you make a reduction sauce from the juices in the pan, it is probably best to not give that to your toddler.

Can toddlers eat food cooked in beer?

The most common thing might be beer cheese soup or chili, both of which I have made and added beer to.

We know from the sections above that slow simmering of alcohol in a larger pot of skillet produces the best results in terms of cooking off alcohol. Beer also only has 14 grams of alcohol per a 12-fluid-ounce can or bottle.

Now, I fully admit I’ve given my young kids chili I’ve made with a can of beer in it. I’ve also used a little beer in some batters for deep frying too. And when I make risotto, I always use some wine in addition to chicken broth.

I was still operating then under the assumption that cooking removes the alcohol, which we now know as false.

And nothing bad happened (at least as far as the alcohol goes).

But for maximum safety for your kids, simmer food on the stovetop for at least 30 minutes if not 1 or more hours and use the least amount of alcohol possible for your recipe.

Can young kids or babies eat food with wine in it?

It’s best not to give babies or toddlers any food that’s been cooked with liquor. But generally speaking, beer or wine can be ok. But again, the cooking method varies greatly in terms of how much less alcohol remains in the food when it’s time to eat.

The longer you cook food that you’ve added alcohol to, the lower the percentage of alcohol remaining when you serve it.

For example, soups, or sauces with wine or beer for simmered for 90 minutes or more will see most of the alcohol cooked off.

A small amount of alcohol may still be present, but it’s likely going to be well under the .5% classification for non-alcoholic. The higher the burner on your simmer, the faster the alcohol will evaporate.

Whatever alcohol that’s still present is not likely to cause harm to anyone, including babies. But of course, if you want to be 100% sure, avoid giving babies or toddlers anything cooked with alcohol.

But I’ve followed those steps with my 3 kids without any issues whatsoever.

However, it’s worth pointing out that if you add alcohol later in the cooking process a much higher amount of alcohol will remain in the finished dish.

That’s especially true if you just add the alcohol to hot food or liquid and then remove it from the heat. And it’s even truer for a hot dish where you are flambéeing or lighting the alcohol on fire.

While that might look like it’s literally burning up the alcohol, your finished dish might actually have up to 75% of the alcohol still in the dish.

Tips on evaporating alcohol from foods when cooking

Alcohol is a common ingredient in many dishes, but sometimes it’s necessary to remove it. Whether you’re cooking for someone who doesn’t drink alcohol or simply trying to reduce the alcohol content of your dish, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to evaporate alcohol from foods while cooking.

1. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate naturally

If you’re cooking a dish that requires simmering or braising, the alcohol will naturally evaporate over time as the liquid reduces. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the dish, but it’s the easiest and most foolproof way to remove alcohol.

2. Use high heat to speed up evaporation

If you’re short on time, you can use high heat to speed up the evaporation process. This is especially useful if you’re cooking with wine or another liquid that has a low alcohol content. Simply turn up the heat and let the liquid simmer until the alcohol has evaporated.

3. Add water or other liquids to dilute the alcohol

Adding water or other liquids to your dish can help dilute the alcohol and reduce the overall alcohol content. This is a good option if you want to retain the flavor of the alcohol but need to reduce the amount of alcohol in the dish.

4. Use a lid to trap the alcohol vapor

When cooking with alcohol, a lot of the alcohol will evaporate into the air. You can trap some of this alcohol vapor by using a lid on your cooking vessel. This can help to retain the flavor of the alcohol while reducing the overall alcohol content of the dish.

5. Flame the alcohol to burn it off

If you’re using a high-proof alcohol like vodka or rum, you can flame the alcohol to burn it off. To do this, heat the alcohol in a pan until it begins to vaporize, then carefully ignite the vapors with a long match or lighter. The flames will burn off the alcohol, leaving behind the flavor of the alcohol without the alcohol content.

6. Stir it often

Stirring your dish often helps to aerate the dish and ensures that all of the alcohol gets thoroughly mixed in as that all of it comes into close contact with the heat coming from under the pan.

7. Use a large skillet or wide pot

A larger surface where more of the food and cooking alcohol have more access to air will help speed up the evaporation process compared to using a taller and less wide pot or skillet.

What are the effects on children from meals cooked with alcohol?

It’s common for alcohol to be used as an ingredient in cooking, especially in dishes like stews, sauces, and marinades.

While the alcohol itself is usually cooked off during the cooking process, some residue may still remain in the finished dish. This can be a concern for parents who may be worried about the effects of alcohol on their children.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful to children, especially those under the age of 15. Children’s bodies are not able to process alcohol as efficiently as adults, which means that even a small amount can have a significant impact on their developing brains and other organs.

Some of the potential effects of meals cooked with alcohol on children may include:

  • Impaired coordination and judgment
  • Reduced cognitive function and memory
  • Behavioral problems and mood changes
  • Sleep disturbances and nightmares
  • Increased risk of alcohol abuse later in life

While the amount of alcohol that remains in a dish after cooking can vary widely depending on the recipe and cooking method, it’s generally recommended that parents avoid giving dishes containing alcohol to children.

If a dish does contain alcohol, it’s best to err on the side of caution and either avoid serving it to children altogether or wait until the dish has cooled and the alcohol has evaporated before giving it to them.

While meals cooked with alcohol may be a tasty addition to a meal for adults, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks to children. Parents should take steps to limit their children’s exposure to alcohol in any form, including through food, in order to promote healthy development and reduce the risk of long-term harm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is beer bread OK for kids?

Yes is the short answer.

Most types of beer bread will see alcohol content of at or well below .5% alcohol remaining in the final product, which classifies as non-alcoholic.

But that being said, if you want to err on the side of no alcohol whatsoever, you can make beer bread with any carbonated beverage, apple juice, or flavored water.

Also, bear in mind that your average beer bread recipe would likely make up to 8 servings with only 1 beer. So not only will most of the alcohol evaporate during the 1-hour baking process, but divided across 8 servings, it would still be a small amount of alcohol.

So for me and my family, I’m not worried about giving my toddler or older daughters beer bread.

Is wine vinegar OK for toddlers?

Wine vinegar, such as white wine vinegar, has a little wine flavor, but if there are any traces of alcohol, they are so minimal that it will be just fine for toddlers. Plus, due to the acidic nature of vinegar, you also aren’t likely using much, so there isn’t enough alcohol to do anything.

What are some good non-alcoholic substitutes?

If you just want to avoid any potential health problems but you still want something that provides the same function of wine in what you’re cooking, there are some things that can make a good substitute.

The easiest way to get that flavor would be to use a wine vinegar combined with broth (to even out the tartness).

But there is one other thing with tasty flavor that would be a good idea if you can find it.

It is called saba, or sometimes saba balsamic. It’s cooked grape juice but it (unlike wine) was never fermented. So it has that flavor but was never turned into wine or vinegar.

It’s a bit of a specialty food item so local grocery stores are unlikely to have it. However, there is this great one on Amazon I really like. So check that out and see what the current price is on Amazon.

Why do we cook some foods with alcohol?

Alcohol has been used in cooking for centuries and is often added to different dishes for its unique flavor and ability to enhance other flavors. It can also help to tenderize meat, preserve food, and act as a cooking medium for certain ingredients.

When alcohol is added to a dish, it can help to break down and dissolve fats and other substances, which can help to create a more flavorful and well-balanced dish. It can also help to enhance the aroma of certain ingredients and give the dish a richer, more complex flavor profile.

Alcohol can also be used as a cooking medium for certain ingredients, such as fruits and vegetables. For example, when apples are cooked with a small amount of brandy or rum, the alcohol helps to bring out the natural sweetness and flavor of the fruit.

Another reason why alcohol is used in cooking is its ability to preserve food.

When alcohol is added to a dish, it can help to kill bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause food spoilage. This is particularly important in dishes that are meant to be stored for a longer period of time, such as stews, soups, and sauces.

Overall, alcohol is a versatile ingredient that can add a lot of flavor and depth to a wide range of dishes.

While it’s important to be mindful of the potential risks of serving alcohol to children or individuals with certain health conditions, it can be a valuable addition to any cook’s toolkit.

Can kids drink cooking wine?

Cooking wine is a type of wine used in cooking to add flavor to dishes.

While it may look similar to regular wine, it is not intended for drinking as it often contains a higher amount of salt and preservatives, and is not subjected to the same regulations as regular wine.

Children and Cooking Wine

Cooking wine should never be given to children as it still contains alcohol, even if in slightly lower amounts.

Alcohol consumption can be harmful to a child’s development and may lead to serious health problems. If a recipe calls for cooking wine, it is recommended to use a non-alcoholic substitute or to let the dish simmer for a longer period to evaporate the alcohol content.

Some parents do choose to begin introducing their teens to alcoholic drinks prior to legal drinking age to eliminate the mystery, control their consumption, and remove the allure of it being an illicit substance.

But for those parents who choose to do that, regular wine will taste far better than any cooking wine.

Alcohol Content in Cooking Wine

The alcohol content in cooking wine varies depending on the type and brand.

However, the alcohol level is generally a little bit lower than regular wine due to the addition of salt and other ingredients. Nonetheless, it still contains alcohol and should be used in moderation.

Differences Between Regular Wine and Cooking Wine

Regular wine is made for drinking and is subject to strict regulations regarding its production and labeling.

On the other hand, cooking wine is not intended for drinking and may contain additives such as salt, vinegar, or other flavorings to enhance its taste. Additionally, cooking wine often has a longer shelf life due to the added preservatives.

In short, cooking wine is low-end wine that probably never tasted great to begin with that gets salt and preservatives added.

Top chefs would never cook with cooking wine as most believe (quite rightly) that you shouldn’t cook with a wine you wouldn’t drink. And while most of us don’t have the luxury of buying a $30-40 bottle of wine just to cook with a $10 bottle will still be infinitely better than any cooking wine.

Or just cook with leftover wine that is still drinkable but maybe a little past it’s prime.

Acceptable for Adults to Drink

While cooking wine is not intended for drinking, adults may choose to drink it. However, it won’t taste as good as regular wine due to the added salt and other ingredients.

What are the best alternatives to alcohol in recipes that call for alcohol?

Alcohol can be an important ingredient in many recipes, but for various reasons such as cooking for kids, it’s not always suitable or desirable to use it. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to alcohol that can be used in cooking to achieve similar flavors and effects.

One safer option for alcohol in cooking is vinegar. That can be:

  • apple cider vinegar
  • wine vinegar
  • balsamic vinegar

But lemon juice works great too.

Both of these acidic liquids can help to cut through fats and add brightness to dishes, much like alcohol can. They can also be used to deglaze pans and create flavorful sauces.

Another alternative is to use non-alcoholic wine or beer.

These products are made with the same basic ingredients as their alcoholic counterparts, but the alcohol has been removed through a specialized process. They can be used in recipes that call for wine or beer, but may not be suitable for dishes where alcohol is a critical component.

Apple cider, grape juice, or other types of fruit juice can also be used as a substitute for wine in cooking. They both have a similar sweetness and acidity to wine and can be used in dishes like beef stew, white wine sauce, tomato sauce, and marinades.

Finally, for those who want to avoid any form of alcohol, there are many alternative ingredients that can be used to add flavor to dishes. Spices, herbs, and aromatic vegetables like onions and garlic can all help to create complex and flavorful dishes without the use of alcohol.

Overall, there are many options for substituting alcohol in cooking. The best option will depend on the recipe and personal preferences, but there are plenty of options available for those who want to avoid or limit their use of alcohol.

If substituting vinegar, just be aware that will add a lot of acidity to the dish which alcohol won’t.

So don’t do a 1-1 substation. Instead, consider diluting it with water or broth and consider adding a little honey to balance the acidity.

Final thoughts

In this article, we took a look at cooking with alcohol and serving that food to kids.

After all, while alcohol in recipes can make for some yummy food, no parent wants to accidentally give alcohol to their child. So we looked at whether the alcohol truly cooks off, and if so, how long and how high of a temperature that takes.

Ultimately, we answered the question of can toddlers eat food cooked in wine with the answer of yes. But how much alcohol is used, the type of food, and how long it’s cooked for are big factors in the overall safety. Pregnant women should also observe the same things.

27 Surprising Characteristics of a Narcissistic Mother

characteristics of a narcissistic mother Rapunzel and Mother Gothel dolls Middle Class Dad

My ex-wife struggled with her relationship with her mother, and it’s made us wonder if her mom is a narcissist. So we decided to look into all the characteristics of a narcissistic mother.

The characteristics of a narcissistic mother include being defensive, using fear & intimidation to control the child, being quick-tempered, blaming the child for everything, forcing the child to be the responsible one, but putting on a front to others of appearing to be a perfect family.

No parent is perfect. We all have moments where we just want our needs to come first, just for once.

However, getting what you want every once in a while when trying to balance work, life, kids and a spouse is not the same thing as being a narcissist.

So whether you’re wondering if you, as a mom or parent might be a narcissist, or whether you think your own mother might be, you’re in the right place. That is especially true for adult children of narcissists.

In this post, we’re diving deep into narcissistic traits and narcissistic behaviors, and how they affect us and those family members around us.

But I encourage you to review all 27 signs below to get a better understanding of whether your mother or father is a narcissist.

characteristics of a narcissistic mother Rapunzel and Mother Gothel dolls Middle Class Dad

So let’s review the . . .

27 Characteristics of a Narcissistic Mother You Probably Didn’t Know

1. They damage any relationships you have with others

Whether friends or romantic partners, the characteristics of a narcissistic mother definitely include sabotaging all your relationships. This ensures that no one becomes more important to you than her.

2. The narcissistic mother puts themselves above everyone else

Their own needs come first, always and without exception.

3. They blame the child (or others) for everything wrong in their life

They can justify any action and are quick to deflect blame onto others (often the child).

4. This parent often has unachievable expectations for the child

They often set goals and expectations that are completely unrealistic, thereby ensuring the child will fail to achieve them.

5. Her feelings are the only feelings that really matter

Lacking empathy, the characteristics of a narcissistic mother definitely include a lack of caring for what others think or feel.

6. The narcissistic parent can justify any decision

They become masters of manipulation and always justify any decision they make.

7. She believes she is incapable of making mistakes

Along those same lines, the narcissistic parent truly believes they don’t make mistakes.

8. She routinely invades your personal space an doesn’t respect boundaries

This parent doesn’t respect boundaries and creates insecurity in her children by invading their personal space.

9. This parent projects their own mistakes, insecurities, and issues onto others

Everything bad is always someone else’s fault; often the child or the other parent. No matter what the scenario, they become masters of projecting issues onto others.

10. In cases with more than one child, the narcissistic parent may well favor one child over another

Favoritism among children is common as it creates insecurity in one and a false sense of security in the other. Ultimately that makes both children easier to control.

11. The narcissistic parent creates a co-dependent relationship with the child

Co-dependency is defined as having an unhealthy emotional dependence on another. In this case, the narcissistic parent makes the child completely dependent on them through fear, manipulation, and guilt.

12. They discipline the child not to teach a lesson but to get even

The characteristics of a narcissistic mother definitely include being mean, vindictive and petty. They often punish the child to get even and not as a consequence or lesson.

13. This parent often will take credit for your accomplishments

To keep the child down, the parent often takes credit for good grades, talent or sporting achievements.

14. The narcissistic parent may open credit accounts in your name or otherwise legally take advantage of you without your consent

Not caring about anyone but themselves, and perhaps justifying that you somehow owe them, this parent may open credit or bank accounts in your name or otherwise fraudulently conduct transactions in your name. If they do tell the child, they will justify why it was necessary or why they had the right.

15. She is constantly putting down or criticizing her children

Shame and ridicule are common tactics used by narcissistic parents.

The more they damage the Child’s Self-Esteem (click to read my article on how to improve it), the easier the child is to manipulate and control.

16. They use fear and intimidation to control the child

The characteristics of a narcissistic mother often include controlling the child through fear tactics. Being mean, yelling and constantly belittling are all normal behaviors for this parent.

17. You were forced to take on the parental responsibility in the house

Many children of narcissistic parents often find themselves having to be the adult in the house. While the narcissist definitely is in charge, the child may be the one having to pay bills, look after other siblings and do whatever is necessary to keep the house running.

18. They get defensive quickly and often

The narcissistic parent is very quick to take any statement the wrong way. They may respond explosively to even the slightest suggestion of fault or wrongdoing.

19. The narcissistic parent often pushes their child to achieve their own dreams instead of what the child wants

Many a narcissistic parent puts their own failed or unrealized goals and dreams onto the child. In this process, the child’s own desires are intentionally ignored or ridiculed.

20. She will make you think you are the crazy one using a manipulation tactic called gaslighting

Gaslighting is a process of manipulation where the parent uses emotional abuse to get the child to question their own sanity. They may deny remembering events or actions in an attempt to sow seeds of doubt in the mind of the child.

21. This parent puts up a front of the “perfect family” to all outsiders

Having the appearance of a perfect family is of utmost importance to the narcissist. Whether the family is actually well-functioning matters little as long as it appears that way to educators, clergy, and neighbors.

22. The narcissistic mother teases and makes fun of her children

The characteristics of a narcissistic mother also include putting her children down by mocking, making fun of and teasing them in a cruel way.

23. She will lie to her children or others routinely

It should go without saying that a narcissistic parent will lie to her children or anyone else to get what she wants. Everything is secondary to her own needs and she will do whatever is necessary to get what she wants.

24. They lack empathy

Empathy is truly feeling what someone else feels; to figuratively walk in their shoes. A narcissist lacks the ability to really do that. Thus they never really understand or care about how others feel.

25. The narcissistic parent loses their temper quickly

Because the narcissist is driven both by insecurity and a need to control others, they have a tendency to lose their temper quickly when things don’t go exactly as they planned.

26. She only doles out affection as a reward for your compliance

The narcissistic mother doesn’t truly love her kids as we do.

But she will show affection when it is a means to an end. In other words, she will be affectionate as a reward for the child behaving the way she wants. But she will do this infrequently enough to where the child is ultimately starved for genuine affection and connection.

27. The narcissist uses guilt trips to get the child to comply

Guilt is a close ally of a narcissistic parent. Guilt is a form of manipulation where the parent says things to the child that make them regret an action or a choice. Ultimately it damages the child’s self-esteem and makes them easier to control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the traits of a narcissistic mother?

If you have seen the Disney movie Tangled, the character Mother Gothel, the non-birth mother of Rapunzel, is an excellent example of a narcissistic mother.

Mother Gothel shows us her true colors while being hidden from Rapunzel for most of the movie. We’ll get into all 27 characteristics of a narcissistic mother below, but here is a quick overview of some of the most common traits of a narcissistic mother:

Narcissistic Trait How It Shows Up
Won’t admit fault Never apologizes, blames others
Lacks empathy for others Seemingly oblivious to how her actions affect others, uncaring
Creates co-dependency Uses fear & manipulation to ensure you remain dependent on her
Switches from happy to angry quickly Driven by ego and a need to control, the narcissist can explode quickly when things don’t go their way

How does a narcissistic mother behave?

A narcissistic mother or parent is affected by narcissism, sometimes called narcissistic personality disorder.

Usually, narcissistic parents are uncomfortably close to their kids in an unhealthy way. They may also be jealous of or threatened by, the child growing up and starting their own life.

As I said, none of us are perfect, but just by identifying an underlying issue, we’re now halfway to fixing it.

In the case of almost any mental health issue, getting to the root cause is crucial. Then, and only then, can we begin to move forward with healing from it.

If you are the child of a narcissistic parent then learning how to set boundaries is crucial.

For the narcissist themselves, working with a therapist and finding ways to take responsibility for past actions is also crucial.

Emotional abuse is a key component of this relationship.

Narcissistic mothers strive to control the child and everything they do, using fear, guilt, and manipulation to achieve that control.

Ultimately the narcissistic parent is driven by low self-esteem.

They seek to inflate their own feelings of self-worth at the expense of the child and others around them. They tend to lack empathy and have a general lack of concern for how their own actions affect those around them.

The narcissistic parent may also employ the Authoritarian Parenting Style (click to read my article of the signs), which can also be driven by low self-esteem.

That parenting style, arguably the most damaging way to parent, is identified by a very top-down, command-and-control style that leaves little room for flexibility or creativity with the child.

How do you deal with a narcissistic mother?

The key here is boundaries.

Let me say that again. Boundaries. Boundaries are crucial for your own sanity, mental health, and overall well-being.

Remember, you can’t change your narcissistic mother (or father). In fact, you can’t change ANYONE. The only thing you can really change in this world is your own actions, statements, and thoughts.

The idea of having control over anything else is an illusion.

You may well love your narcissistic mother. And you hope she loves you. But if we’re talking about a true narcissist, there’s literally nothing you can do that’s going to change them.

So you have to be strong.

You have to understand that there will be times she uses some of the following tools to manipulate you:

  • Guilt
  • Fear
  • Shame
  • Criticism

She may well play the martyr (“no one loves me”), or say things like “you never want to spend time with me”. Those things will tug at your heartstrings. They WILL make you feel guilty.

You have to train yourself to recognize those signs and to limit your interaction with her. In some cases, it may even mean cutting them out of your life.

Dave Ramsey once said, and he was talking about personal finance but it applies here: “to be clear is to be kind“.

Tell your mother what behaviors you are not willing to tolerate. Let her know the consequences if she behaves that way. Then stick to your guns and follow through. You won’t cure her narcissism, but she can learn to not push you away.

What is malicious mother syndrome?

This is a term often used to describe a mother (or either parent) during divorce proceedings.

The term was first coined by psychologist Ira Turkat in describing a pattern of unusual behavior during a divorce. That being said, the term malicious mother syndrome is not currently recognized by mental health professionals as an official diagnosis. So more often it is simply a legal or descriptive term.

Malicious Mother Syndrome or Malicious Parent Syndrome has 4 major identifying points:

  1. They attempt to punish the other parent in the divorce by alienating the children from the other parent
  2. These parents may work through the courts to limit or deny custody or even visitation to the other parent
  3. A Malicious mother may lie to their children about the other parent
  4. Malicious parents have no other underlying conditions on which to excuse this behavior

Ultimately the narcissistic mother and the malicious mother share some commonalities.

In both cases, they want what they want at everyone else’s expense and they are oblivious to how their own actions and needs impact the lives of others, especially their child.

Do narcissists love their children?

Ultimately the answer is no. A narcissistic mother or parent cannot truly love another person.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a narcissistic personality disorder is:

“a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others.

But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that’s vulnerable to the slightest criticism.”

A key component to love is empathy; the ability to truly put ourselves in the shoes of another and identify with how they feel.

Thus since one of the characteristics of a narcissistic mother is the lack of the ability to empathize with how others are feeling, they ultimately lack the ability to love.

If you aren’t sure how to cultivate empathy, start by developing Empathetic Listening Skills (click to read my article). That can truly serve you in your family, work, and all relationships.

Can a narcissist feel guilty?

While the characteristics of a narcissistic mother may include the ability to feel regret, they often lack the ability to feel remorse.

What’s the difference between remorse & regret?

Regret simply means you wish you hadn’t done or said a particular thing. In other words, the narcissist may regret having done something, and they may recognize their actions hurt someone else.

But ultimately their sense of regret has nothing to do with the pain they caused another.

They feel regret because the action ultimately somehow hurt or inconvenienced them. Remorse, on the other hand, is tied closely to empathy.

Remorse is understanding and feeling how our own actions affected another.

When you feel remorse you truly wish you hadn’t taken the action that caused the other pain because you truly understand and feel how it affected them.

As we said above, the characteristics of a narcissistic mother include a lack of empathy. So, the narcissistic parent never really feels true remorse.

Do narcissists get jealous?

Yes is the short answer.

But they use it as a manipulation tactic. It’s not truly driven out of fear and insecurity the way it would in the rest of us.

Remember, a true narcissist is incapable of true love. It doesn’t register. So every relationship they have, be it with family, friends or their children is more of a transaction. Just like at the store, they pay for something and want something in return.

They don’t enter relationships out of a need for companionship.

It’s to gain control, boost ego, or appear “normal”. So if the child of a narcissist suddenly starts to assert their independence, the parent will appear jealous.

In truth, the parent isn’t jealous. They are just angry that their child isn’t doing precisely what they wanted them to do. They fear losing control and it’s an ego blow; nothing more.

How do you tell if your parents are narcissistic?

Ultimately if you are wondering if your mom or dad (or both) are narcissists, you’ll see some, but probably not all, of the 27 characteristics I outline below.

But some of the most common ways to tell include:

  • They exaggerate their own accomplishments (to make themselves look more successful)
  • Setting goals for you are driven by their own desires (without regard for what you want)
  • They love to play the martyr (“oh, don’t worry about me”)
  • Criticizing you just enough so you always know they are boss (which boosts their own self-esteem)
  • They use guilt to manipulate you into doing things
  • There is little flexibility with their rules and they see any questions as a threat

Should you get professional help to deal with a narcissistic mother?

Dealing with a narcissistic mother can be a difficult and emotionally draining experience.

It is important to recognize that mental health issues can arise from this type of parenting, and it is important to seek professional help if needed. A traumatic event such as narcissistic parenting can cause emotional pain that can have long-term effects on an individual’s mental health.

The first step in seeking professional help is to recognize the signs of narcissistic parenting and the emotional pain it causes.

It is important to be aware of the psychological abuse that may be present in this type of relationship, as well as any other signs of emotional distress. Once these signs are identified, it is important to seek out professional help in order to address the issue and begin healing from the trauma.

Professional help can provide emotional support and guidance in dealing with a narcissistic mother.

A therapist or counselor can provide insight into how best to cope with the situation, as well as provide strategies for managing emotions and stress levels.

They can also provide resources for further support, such as support groups or online forums where individuals can share their experiences and receive advice from others who have gone through similar situations.

It is important to remember that seeking professional help does not mean giving up on your relationship with your mother; rather, it means taking steps toward healing from the trauma caused by narcissistic parenting.

A qualified therapist can provide an opportunity for growth and understanding, which can lead to healthier relationships in the future.

Taking this first step towards healing is essential for those dealing with a narcissistic mother, as it will allow them to move forward in their lives without being weighed down by the emotional pain caused by their past experiences.

Can you get a narcissistic parent to change?

Narcissistic parents can be difficult to deal with, and it can be hard to get them to change.

Narcissistic fathers, in particular, can be very difficult to deal with as they often want to be the center of attention and have difficulty understanding the needs of others.

But a narcissistic mother is also equally challenging to deal with.

Narcissistic people often have certain personality traits that make it hard for them to form healthy relationships with other human beings.

For those who have grown up with a narcissistic parent, it can be especially difficult to cope with their behavior as an adult.

A daughter of a narcissistic mother may have a hard time forming healthy adult relationships as she gets older due to the lack of emotional support she received from her mother growing up. Similarly, a son of a narcissistic father may find it hard to trust people and form meaningful relationships due to his father’s inability to show genuine love and affection.

It is possible for narcissistic parents to change, but it is not easy.

But it also depends greatly on whether they have actually been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder by a licensed professional, or if they just display some narcissistic characteristics.

Changing our behavior requires a lot of patience and understanding on the part of both parties involved.

The first step is for the parent in question to recognize their own behavior and take responsibility for it. They must also be willing to work on changing their behavior and developing healthier ways of interacting with others.

The child or adult child must also be willing to work on their own issues related to their parent’s narcissism.

This includes learning how to set boundaries, communicate effectively, and develop healthier relationships with other people in their lives. It is important that both parties are willing and able to work together in order for any real progress or change in behavior from the narcissistic parent can occur.

In conclusion, while it is possible for narcissistic parents to change, it is not easy and requires a lot of effort from both parties involved. It is important that both the parent and child are willing and able to work together in order for any real progress or change in behavior from the narcissistic parent can occur.

But ultimately as my old, late friend Mark used to say, “there’s no better predictor of future behavior than past behavior.” Mark was very high up in HR at my old employer and had great wisdom, insight, and vision.

Should you cut a narcissistic mother or father out of your life?

When it comes to dealing with a narcissistic parent, the decision to cut them out of your life is not an easy one.

Narcissistic abuse can be incredibly damaging, and daughters of narcissistic mothers often struggle with their emotional needs and sense of self. It is important to recognize the signs of a narcissistic parent, such as unrealistic expectations and verbal abuse, in order to make an informed decision about whether or not cutting them out of your life is the only way.

Having good self-esteem is essential for anyone who has experienced narcissistic abuse.

It can be difficult to build up your sense of self when you have been subjected to a parent’s unrealistic expectations and verbal abuse. However, it is possible to learn how to value yourself and recognize your own worth. Taking time for yourself and engaging in activities that make you feel good can help you build up your self-esteem.

It may also be beneficial to seek professional help if you are considering going no-contact with a narcissistic parent.

A therapist or counselor can provide support as you work through the process of making this difficult decision. They can also help you develop coping strategies for dealing with any feelings that may arise as a result of cutting off contact with your parent.

Ultimately, the decision whether or not to cut a narcissistic parent out of your life is yours alone.

It is important to consider all aspects before making this decision, including how it will affect both you and your family members.

If you decide that cutting off contact with your parent is the best option for you, then it is important to remember that it does not mean that you are giving up on them or that they do not matter anymore; rather, it means that taking care of yourself and protecting yourself from further harm should come first.

Final thoughts

  • Can a narcissist mother love their child?
  • Can a narcissist feel guilty?
  • What is a narcissistic mother?

It’s not easy living with a narcissistic parent, but it’s also not easy being the narcissist. Healing, boundaries, and clear communication all play a crucial role in working through a parent-child relationship with a narcissistic mother or parent.

Ultimately as the child of a narcissist identifying how the Traits of a Toxic Person (click to read my article) affect you is crucial to your own health, healing, and well-being.

Do you have a narcissistic mother?

I am not a doctor, a psychiatrist or mental health professional. I do, however, have decades of managing hundreds of people, am both a son and a parent, and do have direct experience in dealing with narcissists. This post, like all my posts, is based on my research, opinions, and observations. If you need medical or professional advice you should seek out a qualified professional in your area.
