How to Build a Deck Step by Step with Pictures

nice deck with a chiminea how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

I’ve wondered how to build a deck for years! So I set about learning how to build a deck step by step and took pictures during the process.

To build a deck, start by:

1. Placing concrete deck blocks about every 3-5′. They don’t need to be level with each other but should be level with the ground, so shovel the ground as needed.
2. Place 4×4 posts in each concrete block going up
3. Run 2″x6″ between the 4×4 posts & cut off any excess post above the level board
4. Run wood braces between the 2×6 boards
5. Attach deck boards running opposite the 2×6 boards
6. Stain

Make no mistake, my friend Dave, who had done it before, was the brains of the operation. But in helping him, while he is certainly VERY skilled, I came away realizing just how easy it would be for most folks to build a deck too.

So in this post, I’m going to detail everything involved in how to build a deck step by step with pictures.

Yes, you can get fancier.

You could add fancy railings. And you could have multiple levels, etc.  I’m not a master carpenter. But I can tell you that a somewhat basic deck has transformed our backyard into someplace we love to hang out now. It’s also a great way to increase your home’s value.

That was not the case before I decided to build a deck.

Ready to build your deck? Jump right to my recommended tools and supplies page (click to see it)! I only recommend the very top-rated tools and items, taking the worry and hassle out of figuring out what to buy.

You can get everything you need quickly and easily by ordering on Amazon or pre-ordering with Lowes or Home Depot and having it ready for pickup.

How long does pressure-treated wood last?

When wood rots, it’s usually an issue with moisture.

Typically when you buy lumber at a Home Depot or Lowe’s, it’s treated lumber. To pressure treat lumber, companies inject a preservative into the wood. That is designed to resist rot, fungus, and termites.

However, it doesn’t make wood water-resistant. So pressure treated lumber still soaks in and loses moisture depending on the weather. Over time, this causes pressure treated lumber to move, crack, and bend.

So, once your deck is done, while you can leave it natural, applying a water-repelling stain will definitely help your deck last longer.

In terms of how long the pressure treated wood will last, many companies offer lifetime warranties. But the reality of you remembering which brand of lumber you bought 10 years earlier, having the receipt and trying to get compensated for some rot in your deck is fairly unlikely.

That being said, 15 to 20 years is about right for most decks.

The range will be based on how much direct sunlight the deck gets, whether you’re near the ocean and the damaging effects of saltwater, or if your area gets more rain than normal.

Can I build a deck directly on the ground?

Yes is the short answer.

In some cases, if your back door is low to the ground, a ground-level deck may be your only option. Do make sure that any wood that comes in contact directly with the soil is pressure-treated to resist rot. But avoid actually burying wood in the ground.

Contrary to popular belief, the issue with wood touching ground isn’t with the wood getting wet. It’s with the challenges that come from the wood not being able to dry well.

One of the benefits of a ground-level deck is that you can avoid having to use:

  • Guardrails
  • Stairs
  • Posts to raise the deck from the footings

You also want to make sure there is enough space between the deck and the ground to allow airflow. But having footings on the ground, and then joists, followed by your deck boards work just fine.

Do you need a permit to build a deck on the ground?

Most likely no is the answer here.

Of course, every city, county, or state in the US may have different building codes. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, they may have specific rules too.

So it’s always a good idea to check with them before embarking on any building project.

That being said, the International Residential Code, which most states in the US follow, your deck (above ground or not) will not need a building permit if it is

  • Less than 200 square feet
  • Under 30” off the ground
  • Does not serve a required exit door
  • Is not attached to the dwelling

When I built my deck, while it was not a ground-level deck, it wasn’t attached to the house, and chances are yours won’t be either.

What happens if you don’t get a permit for a deck?

In most cases, probably nothing.

That being said, you should always consult your local building inspector’s office and find out what may be required. But the likelihood of them finding out about your deck (which is most cases won’t be visible from the street) is fairly small.

After all, in many cities, you are technically supposed to get a permit even to replace a ceiling fan and I’m guessing thousands of people do that every month by themselves.

Now if you’re adding extensions to your home without a permit or turned your garage into another bedroom without a permit, when it comes time to sell your home, you could run into issues, since that additional square footage won’t be on any official record.

But in most cases, a deck would never be included in the square footage of tax records.

The biggest consequence of building a deck without a permit would be if a building inspector happened to drive by your house and saw construction or unloading of a large quantity of materials, or if perhaps a noisy neighbor bothered to check the building department for your permit and lodged a complaint when that was missing.

In those cases, you would be issued a fine, or in extreme cases, may be asked to dismantle it. Also know that if there was damage to the house, and your insurance company determined your un-permitted deck was somehow to blame, they could try and get out of paying your claim.

So building anything on your house, including a deck, without a permit, is definitely a risk. But I’ve done it twice now (I have moved since living in the home pictured here) and didn’t get a permit either time.

How far can deck joists span?

A deck joist is the cornerstone of the structural part of the deck.

They run longways to form the foundation of your deck with your deck boards often running in the opposite direction on top of the joists. The required joist size is based on how many footings you are using.

Also, know that the allowable span of deck joists is also based on the kind of wood you are using.

2″x12″ pine joists are fairly common for deck building and if you were spacing yours 16″ apart from one another, the total span you should not exceed would be 16’6″.

But other types of wood would not be quite that long, so a span of 15′ is safer for almost any kind of wood.

How long do deck joists last?

As I mentioned above in talking about pressure treated lumber, the average deck will last between 15-20 years, especially when using pressure-treated lumber that has been waterproofed with a sealer or stain.

One trick to make your deck joists last longer is to coat them with a moisture-resistant stain or sealer before you add the deck boards. The color doesn’t really matter since you won’t see much of the framing, but it will help make your joists last considerably longer.

The 2 things that damage wood decks the most are sun and moisture that isn’t able to evaporate quickly. So make sure the underside of your deck gets good ventilation, and you’re likely to see your deck, and the deck joists, last up to 20 years.

Do deck joists need to be treated?

Yes is the short answer.

You could, of course, buy non-treated lumber, which would be less expensive. But since you’ll be spending at least $500 even if you’re doing everything yourself, why not spend just a little more to get pressure-treated lumber?

So my recommendation would be to use pressure-treated lumber for everything on your deck. It will resist rot better, can support more weight, is less likely to warp or shift.

For most deck framing wood, you should look for “ground-contact use” (.40) pressure treated wood unless you are burying the wood partially. In that case, I would use “below-grade (.60) pressure-treated wood.

For things like deck railings, and deck boards, you’ll be fine with “above-grade use” (between .15-.25) pressure-treated lumber.

How much does it cost to build a deck DIY?

The key to making this less costly was to not pour concrete. You could trench holes, buy, mix, and pour concrete, but in my experience, these inexpensive concrete blocks work great and they have held up well.

No, we used these simple concrete deck blocks from Lowes.  They call that a “12 in. x 8 in. x 12 in. Concrete Patio Pier Block” and the company who makes them is called Headwaters.

They are $6.52 each (as of this writing).

how-to-build-a-deck-step-by-step-with-pictures-concrete-block-middle-class-dad

Full disclosure, we did have a few of these where one of the 4 corners broke off as we put the 4×4 posts in the center.

We just got some concrete adhesive (comes in a tube-like silicone) and we just put a little on there and stuck the corners back on and they worked just fine.

Annoying for sure, but still a whole lot easier than digging post holes and pouring concrete!

All told, we spent about $1,600 to build our deck. That included the money I paid Dave for his assistance. So if you are truly doing this on your own, depending on size, you could come in under $1,000!

Thus, building your own deck doesn’t have to break the bank!

But let’s get into how to build a deck step by step with pictures!

How many footings do I need for a deck?

STEP 1 -Placing the concrete blocks

This is the first step in how to build a deck step by step with pictures.

These blocks provide the main support for your deck, so it is crucial that you use enough of them and spread them out evenly to distribute the weight properly.

For the blocks, while they don’t have to be level with each other, you do want them level in general. So if your yard is uneven, be prepared to use a shovel to dig to make the ground flat where you plan to put them.

Again, don’t worry if one is a few inches higher than the other (we’ll get to why in a minute), just make sure they sit level.

At most you want one of these blocks every 5 feet, so we went with 5 feet across but every 3 feet deep from front to back.  Here’s what it looked like when we just put the blocks down (we have not yet leveled them).

concrete deck blocks not leveled how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

Next, we began to level those blocks as I mentioned. You can see one near the stairs where we had to use the concrete adhesive to fix a corner.

We simply dug a small amount of dirt away, placed the block down, used a level to check it and that was it.  Do note these things are a little heavy, so be prepared to carry one at a time. If you have a wheelbarrow handy (which we did not), that would help!

STEP 2 – Place the support posts in the blocks

The next step was to cut some 4×4 posts to stand in the center of each block and then run some 2″x6″ support boards from left to right.  The length of these boards totally depends on how big your deck is.

We used a lot of 16′ ones which we cut a little short, but if you aren’t having to work around an AC unit and some concrete stairs as we did, I wouldn’t cut them at all and would just center the deck to your space.

Don’t have a monster truck to haul 16-foot boards for your how to build a deck step by step project?

Do what I did and rent a flatbed truck (click to reserve it on the Home Depot website at a location near you) from Home Depot for $19 bucks!

Home Depot truck rental loaded with deck boards how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

Here is why it doesn’t matter if the blocks are at the same height; you simply cut the 4×4 posts to the height you want.

You can get all fancy with laser levels if you want. Or use that string that leaves a chalk mark.

However, all we did was stand the 4×4 posts up gently (since there is nothing keeping them in place yet). Then we stood one of our 2″x8″ support boards (joists) on the top of the end one while one of us held the other end.

Place your level on top of the support board and when it’s level, just use a pencil to mark where the top of the support board is on the other 4×4 posts.

Once your first support board is level then level across for your next support board, leveling across and deep.

Once you get the 4×4 posts set on each end of the support board, go back and put in the ones in between.

What size joists are used for decking?

Joists are the long support boards that run across your deck. The deck boards get attached to these.

Thus these are your primary means of support. In modern construction, these would typically be 16″ apart from one another (from the center of one to the next). In terms of how much weight they can support, you would typically multiply the height of the board (in inches) by 1.5 to determine how many feet it should run in length.

For example, if your joist is a 2″x8″ (as ours were) you would multiply the 8 by 1.5 to determine you should not have it run longer than 12 feet (8 x 1.5 equaling 12).

So before you buy your lumber make sure you know exactly how wide you plan to make your deck and buy the appropriate joists.

Of course, local codes may require something different in your area, so always check with your local code or planning office first.

If you have an HOA they may also require the approval of your plans first as well (which was the case for me).

STEP 3 – ATTACH THE SUPPORT BOARDS

We used these 2″x4″ brackets to attach the support boards to the 4×4 posts. Just use a few nails to hold them in place to the post and attach to the support boards.

While we used hammers if you want to build a deck even quicker, consider buying a nail gun from Amazon Prime!

This nail gun also called a brad nailer, doesn’t require a compressor. It features 4.5 stars on Amazon Prime with almost 300 reviews, so you know this is a great tool!

You can get everything you need quickly and easily by ordering on Amazon or pre-ordering with Lowes or Home Depot and having it ready for pickup.

If you don’t need your deck much off the ground, skip the 4×4 posts and just place the support boards right into the slots on the blocks; even easier!

No need to attach anything the blocks; once you nail the wood together it will be plenty stable and secure!

Talk about how to build a deck step by step with pictures! It doesn’t get much easier than that.

If you go the route of not using the posts, however, you will want to make sure the blocks are level with each other.

Simply rest a support board between 2 or more of the blocks and set your level on top.  You’ll see which side needs to go lower and then just dig a little until you are right on the money.

Speaking of money, here’s a money shot of Dave working with the support boards on top of the posts.

Once you have the 4×4 posts attached to the support boards, your foundation is done.

Now you’re more than halfway done in your how to build a deck step by step with pictures project!

STEP 4 – BRACE YOUR SUPPORT BOARDS

With the support boards attached to the posts, they still aren’t that stable.

They are connected to each other, but not across.  Now you simply need to cut some more support boards to run in between the long runs.

Simply measure the distance in between the long support boards, and cut additional support boards to that size and nail in place.

Now your deck should start to get pretty stable when you’re done.  About every 4 feet should work just fine.

Dave also ran some 2×4‘s from the front center down; that’s what those angled boards are.  That just added some extra stability.

Bear in mind most of this appears hidden once your deck boards go on, so it doesn’t have to be pretty!

You’ll notice that Dave added a short section to the front of the deck.

This is basically to have the deck extend a little beyond the first set of posts and blocks; basically to make it look nicer.

We just nailed those small cut boards to the last joist attached to the posts and blocks and then added one more joist on the outside.

But let’s get back to how to build a deck step by step with pictures.

deck frame and cross braces how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

STEP 5 – Attach the decking floorboards

Now all that remains is to put down the deck boards.

You can add stairs depending on the height off the ground and a railing too if needed. But the deck boards will complete the basic deck.

You could stagger the deck boards as you would on a wood floor in your house. I’ve also seen fancy decks where the deck boards were at a 45° angle.

But we simply laid them out even, starting where the deck comes close to the back wall of the house.

Note: we did not put the deck boards touching the house.  That allows for rain to flow off the inside edge of the deck. It also allows for the natural movement of the land and house.

Simply lay the deck boards out, side by side and nail them down.

Ideally, get boards that are the right length for your deck. However, if they are a tad long, once they are all nailed in place, mark how much you need to cut with a pencil. Then just come along with a circular saw and cut the ends off.

For a “prettier” look you could also take the time to measure and cut and put the cut side towards the back wall of the house.

How to build a deck around concrete stairs

In the case of our deck, we had some old concrete steps.  They came off the back door of the house down to the ground.

We built the deck around them as removing it seemed like a pain. Hopefully, you won’t have to mess with that. But I actually think the end result looks great.

If you do have stairs with a railing, as we did, simply take a grinder and cut the bolts holding the metal railings to the concrete.

Then we built the frame around the steps, which hid the lower steps but utilized the upper ones.

This shot shows you how we worked around the steps. It also shows the frame for the wooden steps we added.  The closer to the ground you build a deck, the less of a need you have for steps.

deck frame done without deck boards how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

Don’t feel like you have the skill to cut the notched boards for the steps (what they call stringers)?  You can buy those pre-cut an Amazon too.  Select 3 steps or 4 and it’s done!

Here is what the finished deck looks like!

And with some deck stain added!

finished deck how to build a deck step by step with pictures Middle Class Dad

For stain, we really wanted the natural wood to come through so we went with a semi-transparent stain.  The color was called Harvest Gold from Thompson’s Signature Series.

Deck staining can be a fun and cheap DIY job if you know how to paint and have done it before.

And that completes our how to build a deck step by step with pictures project!!

Sometime in the next 12 months, I hope to put some type of roof or covering over the deck. That way we can use it in the rain and in the scorching heat.  I’ll do a new post when that happens!

Is Costa Rica Kid Friendly? 19 Amazing Reasons We Love it!

My family and I LOVE Costa Rica and have been many times. But for the first time traveling family, I understand wondering is Costa Rica kid friendly?

Costa Rica is very kid friendly, featuring beaches to swim, jungles and rainforests to do easy hikes in, animal sanctuaries to tour, or zip lining across treetops. Costa Rica rates a 1 (the lowest level) on the US State Department’s travel advisory list as well.

But there’s so much more to know and explore about Costa Rica! And even though my family and I have been a number of times, there’s still a ton left for us to explore too.

So let’s review all the most common questions and concerns about taking kids to Costa Rica.

Make sure to check out my Costa Rica Travel Resource List with links to everything you need!

Is Costa Rica a good place for a family vacation?

Absolutely!  My family loves going to Costa Rica and we’ve been many times and will continue to go.

I also have friends there and friends with kids from the US who have moved there. As with any place in the world, that doesn’t mean its without crime or free of dangers. But generally speaking, Costa Rica is an awesome place for a family vacation.

My family includes my 3 daughters.

To be fair, we have only been back to Costa Rica once since the birth of our 3rd daughter in late 2017, but it’s definitely on the list.

Here are some of the things my family loves most about Costa Rica:

  • Beautiful year-round weather – Costa Rica averages a temperature all year between 70° to 81°, and great weather all year including the rainy season. Since it’s close to the equator, it doesn’t really go through seasonal changes but does get more rain between May and November
  • Wildlife everywhere – We’ve seen macaws, howler monkeys, sloths, tons of iguanas, and so much more, almost everywhere you go
  • Amazing beaches – It arguably doesn’t get any better than the beaches in Costa Rica. Pristine sand and warm clear blue water. Most of the time, we’re almost alone too; so not overcrowded.
  • Jungles and rainforests to explore – We’ve hiked through forests to bathe in volcanic hot springs, done rainforest nature hikes, and eaten at the base of a volcano, just to name a few
  • Ziplining – Honestly, I wasn’t expecting any of my daughters to want to do this, but when my oldest backed out, my middle daughter took her place and loved it so much she did it the next day too when she was 7
  • Friendly locals  – The people of Costa Rica (Ticos, as they are known), are friendly, warm, and inviting people.  They love their country, are proud of it, and welcome the chance to show it to you
  • Yummy food and lots of fresh fruit – Fruit and vegetable stands are everywhere in Costa Rica. You’ve never seen such an abundance of great stuff at such low prices
  • A peace-loving country – Unlike the turmoil that surrounds some Latin countries, Costa Rica is a peace-loving country that abolished its military in 1948. So you won’t see armed Federales toting machine guns anywhere
  • Tons of reserved national parks – 25% of Costa Rican land is dedicated to it’s 161 national parks and refuges. An amazing and preserved natural habitat is usually just a short drive away

But even all that only scratches the surface.

How often does your family take a vacation? Mine usually just does 1 big trip a year, but some families do 3 or more. I decided to research and compile exactly How Many Vacations Does the Average Family Take.

So if you’re interested to see how your family compares, take a moment and check out my article on that.

Is Costa Rica safe for families?

Yes, is the short answer. My family and I have ALWAYS felt safe on our trips.

However, like any country, there is going to be more crime in the larger cities. In Costa Rica, however, that’s really just the capital of San José and maybe the next 2 biggest cities, Liberia and Limón.

Since we go to Costa Rica to get away from it all, we tend to avoid big cities anyway (although we did once eat at an awesome Indian restaurant in San José).

We always rent a car but tend not to drive at night. But that’s honestly more to do with the roads being single lane, and not always fully paved, than due to the possibility of crime.

The US State Department issues travel warnings and advisories across the globe. They currently have Costa Rica at a Level 1 (the lowest out of 4 levels).

That being said, they do have the following specific travel advisories for certain parts of Costa Rica:

“Exercise increased caution in:

  • Central neighborhood in Limón due to crime
  • Liberia city due to crime
  • Desamparados neighborhood in San Rafael due to crime
  • Pavas and Hospital neighborhoods San José due to crime”

Aside from always flying in and out of Liberia, we have not spent any large amount of time in any of those places.

Limón is on the Caribbean side which I have always heard was slightly higher in crime than the Pacific side (where we always are).

San Rafel is just outside of San José, but we stayed in the town of Atenas outside of San José and had a fantastic time with no issues.

So just use normal caution like you would anywhere and you should be just fine.

I’ll do my best to keep this article updated as I do most of my articles, but anytime you travel internationally, it’s always a good idea to check travel advisories first.

Where do families go in Costa Rica?

Above is my middle daughter Jolie juicing a sugar cane pole in Costa Rica!

While my family has been up and down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, we tend to prefer the province of Guanacaste. But I have to say we’ve never been to the Caribbean side, nor have we been south of San José. So there’s a LOT of Costa Rica we’ve yet to explore.

As for where to go in Costa Rica with your family, it depends on your goals.

  • Do you want to lounge on the beach?
  • Want to Zip Line?
  • Explore volcanos and jungles?
  • Be at an all-inclusive resort?

I will also say you don’t have to choose just 1 thing as we’ve done all of those except the all-inclusive.

We like to rent a house on VRBO or Airbnb and rent a car and then use that as a home base to adventure from. Some of the most fun areas on the Pacific side for families include:

  • Tamarindo – Yes, it’s a surfing village and yes it’s touristy and a little crowded, but we still love it. Great beaches, beautiful ocean, a nearby wildlife refuge that’s fun for the kids, with plenty of beach-front restaurants
  • Manuel Antonio – About 3 hours south of San José, this is a National Park abundant with monkeys, sloths, and other animals. Amazing beaches, waterfalls, with activities like snorkeling, surfing, and kayaking
  • Arenal volcano – Located just east of Guanacaste in the Alajuela province, Arenal is one of 14 volcanos in Costa Rica and has been dormant since 2010. Amazing views, hikes, hot springs, fishing, or just floating a river. White-faced capuchin monkeys, jaguar, and deer are abundant in the area
  • Sámara – Located in Guanacaste but way down the Pacific coast lies the beautiful town of Sámara. Pristine pink sand beaches are also known for their sea turtle nests. Unlike the surfing villages, these ocean waves are minimal and perfect for smaller kids
  • Jacó – Jacó is the only place we’ve ever seen macaws in the wild. It’s also an outstanding surfing village known for it’s black/gray sand beaches. While it’s also popular for its nightlife, there’s still tons to do with kids, from seeing crocodiles at the nearby Carara National Park or hiking in rainforests to breathtaking waterfalls
  • Playa Conchal – Our personal favorite beach (of any we’ve been to in the world). The waves are almost non-existent, which keeps the surfers away but was perfect for our young daughters. The sand was white and the water was crystal clear. While there is a nearby Westin Resort, the beach was largely deserted where we were. Howler monkeys lined the trees nearby too. Those are my older 2 daughters at Playa Conchal in the picture at the very top.

Now some of those are admittedly pretty touristy and can be a bit more crowded than some other destinations in Costa Rica. But even tourist towns in Costa Rica are still pretty awesome.

I have a detailed Guide to Guanacaste Costa Rica on my website that goes into great detail about traveling throughout the region and Costa Rica in general, so I highly recommend you take a moment and check that out.

Traveling to Costa Rica with your family

I do think the Liberia airport is easier to get in and out of than San José.

Liberia is much smaller than San José which has more of a Manhattan big-city feel than anywhere else in Costa Rica.

While the first couple of times I went to Costa Rica, the Liberia airport was small with a roll-up staircase to meet the plane, these days, it’s as modern as any US airport.

Like any big expense, it pays to Plan Your Family Vacation early to avoid overpaying, places and flights being sold out, or going deep into debt.

My article details all the crucial planning steps you need for an amazing family vacation, so just click the link to read it on my site or bookmark it for later.

Is Costa Rica safe for babies?

Yes is the answer here too!

We took our oldest daughter Astrid to Costa Rica when she was 1 year old (pictured right above). She had just learned to walk and took some of her first steps on the beach in Tamarindo.

Unless you are traveling from a country known for being at high risk of yellow fever outbreaks, no vaccines are required to visit Costa Rica.

The CDC does have a list of recommended vaccines, of course. But if you aren’t up-to-date, don’t choose to do all the recommended vaccines, or don’t vaccinate at all, as the laws currently are, you’ll be just fine.

Also, unlike much of Mexico, the water in Costa Rica is generally safe to consume.

Do you need a car seat in Costa Rica?

While the laws probably do vary a little, car seats are legally required in Costa Rica just as they are in much of the world.

The good news is it’s easy to check your car seat on the plane. AND every US airline allows you to check your car seat(s) for free! Check it either at the baggage counter or at the gate.

But most rental car companies do offer car seats too (for a fee) if bringing it sounds like a hassle.

Do infants need a passport?

Yes, is the short answer here also. Every US citizen, including newborns, need a passport to travel to any foreign country.

Since babies, obviously can’t write or talk much, the parents (both of them) have to apply for the passport in person WITH the baby (no mail-in forms for babies for anyone under 16). Make sure and bring your child’s original birth certificate with you. Parents will need to bring a valid US driver’s license, passport, or other official ID.

If for some reason, both parents can’t be present, then the parent who can’t be there will have to sign a notarized Statement of Consent (click to download from the government).

Essentially this is simply to prevent 1 parent from taking a child away from another parent and fleeing to another country.

Unlike passports for people ages 16 and over, passports for infants, or anyone under 16, are only valid for 5 years.

Best places in Costa Rica for toddlers

When my wife and I took our then 1-year-old daughter Astrid to Costa Rica for the first time we stayed in the town of Ocotal in the northern part of the province of Guanacaste near Playas Del Coco. The north is where Costa Rica connects to Nicaragua, although we weren’t quite that far north.

There’s a Four Seasons in that general area just in case you’re wondering about safety; it’s a nice area.

We spent much of our time in the pool of the house we rented (with a nice ocean view) or at one of the many beaches we went to. But we also explored the Monkey Park Wildlife Rehabilitation & Release Center near Tamarindo which was a lot of fun.

As you know if you are parents of a toddler, they are on the go (until they are ready for you to carry them). So with that in mind, these are some of my top recommendations where you’ll have fun and so will they:

  • Diamante Eco-Adventure Park – See monkeys, sloths, and jungle cats in their natural habitats along with snakes, frogs, and huge crocodiles. But there’s also hummingbird gardens and a great butterfly observatory too. The park works to fight the illegal capture and trade of wild animals and releases the offspring of the animals they confiscate from smugglers back into protected areas of Costa Rica. So you’ll have a blast while supporting a great cause! Learn more on the Diamante website. Just a little north of one of our favorite towns in Guanacaste called Portrero and a very short drive from the Liberia airport.
  • Corso Lecharia Farm – A working farm your toddler will love! There’s a playground where cows and chickens hang out at, a tractor ride tour of the farm, and kids can even milk a cow if they wish. They also have strawberry greenhouses to see how strawberries are grown (and yes, they’ll get you some to eat). Located a little north of San José. They also have a restaurant and ice cream shop too. Learn more on their bilingual website.

Traveling Costa Rica with a 4-year-old

Four-year-olds up to age 6 obviously have a slightly longer attention span than toddlers but aren’t quite as adventurous, or at least as resilient as tweens and teens. So finding fun stuff to do with them is a little different.

Having said that, almost everything I’m mentioning in this article could be fun no matter what the age, so I encourage you to check it all out and see what makes the most sense for your family.

Here are some of my best recommendations for pre-k kids through early elementary age:

  • The Beach Chocolate Factory – Located in one of our favorite beach towns along the Pacific coast in Guanacaste, called Brasilito. They make amazing chocolate with just 2 ingredients; cacoa and sugar. For older kids, they also offer interactive workshops. Have your kids peel fresh-roasted cacao beans and turn it into their very own chocolate treat! Check out more on their website.
  • Manuel Antonio Park Nature Guided Tour – While this tour is 4 hours, the hiking route is stroller-friendly! So it could be great fun for the adults when centered around nap time. Manuel Antonio Park is one of the most diverse habitats on the planet. You’ll likely see monkeys, toucans, sloths, iguanas, hummingbirds, and much more. Learn more about Jade Tours on their website.
  • Volunteer at the Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rescue Center – While they do often have families stay with them for multiple days learning and helping with their animals, you can also just drop in for a daily tour. While kids of all ages are welcome, kids need to be 6 or above to volunteer without a parent being present. Nestled in La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano, you and your kids will get up close and personal with several kinds of monkeys, macaws, toucans, caimans, turtles, anteaters, and sloths, just to name a few. Check out the Protecto Asis website to learn more.

Traveling Costa Rica with tweens

Here is my oldest daughter Astrid and I snorkeling off the coast of Isla Tortuga!

Cruise to Isla Tortuga

One amazing thing we did as our 2 older girls were headed towards their teen years was to take a cruise to Isla Tortuga.

Isla Tortuga is an island off the coast of Costa Rica and while simple, it was also amazing! Believe it or not, but we did this on Christmas Eve. Remember the weather is pretty nice 365 days a year.

We used Calypso Cruises and LOVED our experience!

Hopefully, Charlie is on your boat as he made all the difference, but all their staff was great. We took a 2-hour cruise out of Puntarenas which is on the Gulf of Nicoya far south on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

The boat had food, drinks, 2 small swimming pools, and what was essentially 2 large nets you could sit on watching the ocean pass underneath you. On the island itself, we had a few hours to explore, but there was a large meal prepared for us too.

The island has some really friendly pigs that let us play with them, but there were also some locals who would bring up oysters from the ocean to order, cleaning them right in front of us, all for $1.00 each!

They also let us snorkel off the coast for a while too, which was awesome also. I can’t recommend Calypso Cruises more!

Paradise Hot Springs

You’ll LOVE the geothermal pools at Paradise Hot Springs located near Arenal Volcano National Park.

The resort has 6 mineral pools and 2 thermal Jacuzzis and day passes there are currently under 30 bucks! The thermal waters from Arenal Volcans have healing minerals combined with an amazing hydro-massage for back, neck, legs, and feet. Trust me; you haven’t really relaxed until you’ve soaked in a Costa Rican thermal pool.

As you soak, you’ll be surrounded by different amazing views (each pool has a different view):

  • Misty mountains
  • The majesty of Arenal Volcano
  • Thick rainforests
  • Tropical flower gardens

Just note they don’t allow kids under age 2.

Ziplines, Aerial Tram & Hanging Bridges

If your tweens are adventure lovers, then they’ll love soaring across treetops and through mountains on zip lines, getting a bird’s eye view of rainforests.

But that’s only the beginning of the fun at Sky Adventures!

Take an open-air gondola that goes up mountains, zip line across canyons, take a series of hanging bridges exploring Monteverde Cloud Forest with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano, Nicoya Gulf, and much more!

For kids age 5 and up, through adults.

Tour a sloth sanctuary

Lastly, consider a private tour of a sloth sanctuary!

A Private Tortuguero Tour with Sloth Sanctuary & National Park is surprisingly affordable and a blast!

You’ll visit a sloth sanctuary, check out a banana plantation, and enjoy amazing views of the pristine Caribbean coast. Starting in Limon, in the old quarter, you’ll learn about the history of the area and the awesome Afro-Caribbean culture.

It’s also worth noting that we saw an awesome firework display on the beach for the 4th of July in the town or Portrero about halfway between Liberia and Tamarindo. I guess they know there’s a lot of US citizens there.

So to quickly recap, here are my . . .

19 amazing reasons that Costa Rica is kid-friendly

1.  Generally low crime everywhere

2. Year-round temps in the 70’s and 80’s

3. Safe tap water

4. Many beaches with little to no large waves

5. Animals everywhere

6. Friendly people everywhere

7. 25% of the country is dedicated to parks

8. Easy to fly to (many locations are just a 3-hour direct flight, compared to the often grueling travel to places like Hawaii)

9. Easy to rent a car in Costa Rica (and your phone’s GPS/maps should work)

10. Many people and places speak English

11. Ocean water is warm and clear

12. Plenty to do, from beaches, jungles, rainforests, waterfalls, and dormant volcanos

13. Inexpensive

14. Yummy food that isn’t spicy

15. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetable stands everywhere

16. Lower speed limits on the roads (compared to the US)

17. Even during the rainy season, the rain is minimal (May to November)

18. Modern airports

19. Lots of stroller-friendly towns and nature trails

Of course, Costa Rica, while incredibly family friendly, isn’t always for kids. So if you and your spouse are looking for a romantic getaway, Costa Rica is great for that too.

So check out one of my most pinned articles on Pinterest about the Best Places to Stay in Costa Rica for Couples (click to read it on my site).

Final Thoughts

In this article, I took an in-depth look into Costa Rica, a place that holds a special place in the hearts of me and my family.

I explored lots of aspects of our favorite family vacation destination. We looked at activities for different age kids, how easy it is to travel there with kids, and some of the safety concerns about international travel there.

Ultimately though, my post was geared to answer the question is Costa Rica kid-friendly. The answer is most definitely yes!

How Many Vacations Does the Average Family Take?

My family and I love to go on vacation, but we really only take 1 big vacation a year. So I wondered how many vacations does the average family take?

40% of Americans, which is almost 100 million people, will take at least 1 vacation each year. Of those 100 million people, 28% will take 3 or more vacations per year. But Americans in the southern states are almost twice as likely to vacation as people in the northern states.

But there’s more to say about family vacations, how often people take them, and even what the average amount of paid time off from work is.

So let’s keep going!

Check out my best travel resources and recommendations (click to read) that will save you time and money on your next vacation!

What percent of families go on vacation?

In the United States, 40% of families plan at least 1 vacation per year. 45% of families who are traveling will have some sort of vacation or getaway during springtime. But 68% of those families who are traveling will be going on vacation during the summer.

That’s according to a recent AAA travel survey, and it’s an increase over prior years.

No matter when they go, 53% of families will be road-tripping versus flying. That could be to keep costs down, because the destinations aren’t far away, or a combination of both.

It’s also worth noting that gas prices affect 33% of travelers’ decisions to go on vacation by car.

Interestingly, families in the southern states are almost twice as likely to plan a family vacation than families in the northern states. I guess we southerners just like to have more fun!

But in all seriousness, 62% of southern families are going to vacation this year compared to only 35% of northern families. That’s a BIG difference.

In terms of how many vacations does the average family take, most families take 1 big vacation each year. But 28% of those who take a family vacation takes 3 or more trips each year.

That’s up 16% just since 2016.

How many weeks of vacation does the average American get?

10 days a year is the average amount of paid time off most Americans get each year. But whether the employee is full-time or part-time affects that as well as how long an employee has worked for the company.

Sadly though, not everyone gets paid time off for family vacations.

According to a recent study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, “the United States is the only advanced economy in the world that does not guarantee its workers paid vacations.”

Specifically, they found that:

  • 23% of Americans get no paid time off or paid holidays
  • Most Americans get 10 paid days off each year
  • In the EU, employees are guaranteed at least 20 paid days off each year, and some offer up to 30
  • For hourly workers, the bottom 25% only get 4 paid days off each year
  • By contrast, the top 25% of hourly workers get 14 paid days off each year

Of course, whether an employee is part-time or full-time will have a big impact on paid days off, as well as whether the employee is paid hourly or on salary.

I worked for Whole Foods Market for 20+ years. At the time when I left the company in 2013, I was being given (but not taking) upwards of 6 weeks of paid time off each year.

But even for new full-time employees, at the time they got about 2 weeks of paid time off each year and what you didn’t use rolled over or could be cashed out.

Want a family vacation, but think you can’t afford it?

Think again! A great family vacation doesn’t have to break the bank, drive you into debt, or rob you of your savings. It just takes a little planning and picking the right destinations. So if think you can’t afford to take a family vacation, you’ll definitely want to check out my list of Affordable Family Vacation Destinations (click to read).

How many vacation weeks do you get after 10 years?

On average, most employees who have been with a company in the US between 10-20 years, get 15-19 paid days off for family vacations. And 13% of those get 24 or more paid days off.

Of course, there are so many variables here, that it’s impossible to give one answer.

As I mentioned above, at least when I worked for Whole Foods Market, they paid way more than that in PTO. It’s also worth noting that in the United States, companies are not required to provide paid time off.

And while some employers provide PTO for any purpose, others break it down by type: sick days, vacation days, holidays, etc.

How many vacation days you might get after 10 years will be based on the following:

  • Are you part-time or full-time? (benefits are typically much better for full-time employees)
  • How long have you worked for your company? (many companies pay more PTO the longer you have worked for them)
  • Does your company provide paid time off? (they aren’t required t0)
  • What are the other benefits your company provides? (the total cost of employee benefits has limits, so if they pay a huge portion of your healthcare costs, they probably pay less in other areas)
  • How many employees does your company have? (usually more employees equals better benefits)

While US employers are not required to provide paid time off, a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that 76% of employers DO provide at least some paid time off.

Average paid time off based on years worked:

Employed between 1-5 years

  • 0-5 paid days off (7%)
  • 5-9 paid days off (38%)
  • 10-14 paid days off (35%)
  • 15-19 paid days off (12%)
  • 20-24 paid days off (7%)
  • 24+ paid days off (2%)

Employed between 5-10 years

  • 0-5 paid days off (2%)
  • 5-9 paid days off (9%)
  • 10-14 paid days off (36%)
  • 15-19 paid days off (34%)
  • 20-24 paid days off (12%)
  • 24+ paid days off (6%)

Employed between 10-20 years

  • 0-5 paid days off (2%)
  • 5-9 paid days off (7%)
  • 10-14 paid days off (16%)
  • 15-19 paid days off (41%)
  • 20-24 paid days off (22%)
  • 24+ paid days off (13%)

Employed 20 or more years

  • 0-5 paid days off (2%)
  • 5-9 paid days off (6%)
  • 10-14 paid days off (13%)
  • 15-19 paid days off (20%)
  • 20-24 paid days off (35%)
  • 24+ paid days off (25%)

What age groups travel the most?

Millennials, those born between 1980-1995, travel more than any other age group, taking, on average, 35 days off each year, compared to Baby Boomers who average 27 vacation days each year or Generation X who take 26 days per year for vacations.

(source)

With almost 100 million people taking family vacations each year.

Here are the exact comparisons between other age groups and travel days on average:

  • Generation Z (born between 1995-2005) – 29 travel days per year
  • Generation X (born between 1965-1980) – 26 travel days per year
  • Baby Boomers (born between 1946 to 1964) – 27 travel days per year

Now that covered how many vacation days does the average family take.

But in terms of how many people, we’ll look at that recent AAA survey I referenced at the top which showed that 44% of millennials are planning to take at least 1 family vacation this year.

That too beats out Generation X (39%) and Baby Boomers (32%).

AAA Senior Vice President Bill Sutherland goes on to state “No matter their age, families are going on not just one, but multiple vacations throughout the year to revisit favorite destinations and experience new places.”

Want to take a summer vacation this year with your family but think everything is booked or will be too crowded?

Think again! I’ve compiled a handy list of some amazing Family Vacation Destinations that many people overlook (click to read).

It’s not too late to plan a great vacation this year for your family, so check out some of those destinations and see if one of them isn’t perfect for your family!

How many US citizens travel abroad each year?

35 million people from the US, on average, take at least 1 family vacation each year to someplace outside the United States. Cancun, The Dominican Republic, and Jamaica top the list of most popular destinations outside of the US.

Going back to AAA again, they found that of the 100 million US family travelers that take at least 1 vacation each year, 35% of them will visit an international destination this year.

For 2019, the top international destinations for the average family vacation are:

  1. Cancun, Mexico
  2. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  3. Montego Bay, Jamaica
  4. Rome, Italy
  5. Dublin, Ireland

Personally, I don’t think I would do a family vacation to Cancun.

For Mexico, I much prefer Puerta Vallarta. For another, I didn’t care much for Cancun. It was like Vegas on the ocean and then the local area of town was far removed from the main party strip, but the local parts I saw didn’t have the quaint feel of old town Puerto Vallarta.

The best part of Cancun for me was renting a car and driving to Chichén Itzá to climb the pyramid (which I don’t think they let you do anymore).

Punta Cana boat tours are a great way to explore exotic Caribbean sea and the prices are affordable for the average American family. Loads of families with kids were having a blast, diving into all sorts of fun summer activities.

Rome, however, would make a great vacation destination for a family to take and I haven’t been to the others on that list.

My favorite family vacation destination, by far, is Costa Rica. I had been when I was single and childless, but once I was married and became a Dad, we took my oldest daughter Astrid there around her 1st birthday and we keep going back.

If Costa Rica has always sounded intriguing to you for a family vacation, check out my Ultimate Travel Guide to Guanacaste Costa Rica (click to read).

Guanacaste is our favorite province to visit (provinces are like states), but I don’t think you could go wrong traveling anywhere in Costa Rica.

How much does the average family spend on vacations per year?

On average, a family of 4 in the US will spend $4,580 total for one family vacation each year. That breaks down to $1,145 per person.

(source)

So we know how many vacations the average family takes, and which age groups travel more, but how much is that costing them?

At the top, I mentioned that 53% of family vacationers will be traveling by car instead of a plane, so that’s definitely one way to keep costs down.

Even with gas and if you rent an SUV, you’ll still likely pay far less than you would to fly; you just have to have the time off to be able to drive to your destination.

That being said, a different survey by Harris Poll & NerdWallet found that parents plan to spend only $2,523 on their family vacation.

They also looked at debt and sadly found that 80% of Americans plan to charge at least $1,467 towards their family vacation this year.

Here are some handy breakdowns by expense category so you know where your hard-earned dollars are going:

  • FOOD COSTS – $132/day (family of 4 eating out all meals)
  • HOTEL – $116/night (average in the US for a family of 4 according to hotels.com)
  • FLIGHTS – $224/each (domestic flights in the US, according to the Consumer Expenditure Survey )
  • TAXES & FEES – Vary, but for many family vacation destinations, this can be hundreds of dollars

Of course, where you go has a big impact on those numbers as Chicago, New York, and Minneapolis have the highest taxes and fees for vacation travelers.

Flying to Hawaii?

Aside from the brutal 10 hours, it will take to get there from many airports, you’re also looking at upwards of $1,000/flight (one of the many reasons I vastly prefer Costa Rica for a tropical vacation, which is a 3-hour flight and at least half the price).

Going to Disney World to check out Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge?

Final Thoughts

In this article, we took a detailed look at the world of family vacations.

We explored how often people take them, which age groups travel more, what percentage goes to international locations, and what the average amount of paid time off at work employees get to take those family vacations.

Specifically, though, we answered the question of how many vacations does the average family take, which is 1 big trip a year for most families, with 28% of those vacationers taking 3 or more.

31 Great Father’s Day Quotes for Your Best Father’s Day

Father and daughters dressed up as superheroes at sunset Father's Day quotes Middle Class Dad

For many of us, our father is the 1 man who truly made a difference in this world. Who made it special. Who was there for us in our times of need. And sometimes it’s hard to find the words to express that.

So I’ve compiled a list of great Father’s Day quotes to help us find the words to express to Dad this year, like this one which I love:

“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around — and why his parents will always wave back.” – William D. Tammeus

So here in this article, I’ve compiled a list of 31 of my favorite Father’s Day quotes.

If your dad or husband likes tools, make sure and check out my Recommended Tools Page. I take the mystery out of picking the very best tools for homeowners and DIY enthusiasts by checking out all the options and only recommending stuff that either I own, have used, or have top reviews on Amazon.

What are your plans for this Father’s Day?

Do you have something special in mind for your Dad or Husband?  If you have kids, are you getting them involved in the plans? Among the many ideas out there, finding great Father’s Day quotes can really make his day.

It’s sometimes hard work being a Good Father, so let us know you care! I did a recent post on Mother’s Day Quotes and it was VERY well received.

Thus I wanted to do the same thing for us Middle Class Dads!

You can post these Father’s Day quotes about him on social media. Or have the kids make handmade Father’s Day cards.

These beautifully written Father’s Day quotes can really convey just how special your Dad or Husband really is.

What qualities make a good father?

A good father is the best job I’ve ever had and I say that having done a lot of cool stuff (like having been on stage with the B-52’s, for instance).

But being a good father doesn’t just happen and it’s not always easy.

I have to show up for work as a dad every day, no matter how I feel, what the day’s priorities are, or even if my wife and I are having a rough spell.

The qualities of a good father include spending time actively involved with your kids, modeling the behavior you expect in them, taking ownership when you make mistakes, limiting their time on technology, treating their mother with dignity.

But that’s just scratching the surface of what it takes to be a good father.

So if you’re ready to dive in deeper, check out all 23 of my Qualities of a Good Father and see which ones resonate with you and where you might want to improve your game.

What should I write in my husband’s fathers day card?

With 3 young-ish kids, obviously, my wife has written me plenty of Father’s Day cards and planned most of what we have done on Father’s Day since I first became a Dad in 2007.

While we dads often have an idea of who we are as a father, no one really sees us quite like our spouse.

That’s because aside from ourselves, our spouse is the 1 other person on the planet who loves our kids as much as we do, and so they pay close attention to how we parent and interact with our kids.

So they’re in a great place to see the kind of parent we are; the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I know my love language, both with my wife and my kids is through action. I fix stuff that’s broken. Sometimes I don’t even know if anyone notices when I fix a toilet paper holder that’s loose or nails that are sticking up on the deck boards.

But I do it because I care and don’t want anyone to get hurt or be inconvenienced.

So wives, for your husband on Father’s Day, just appreciate him for who he is and what he does. All too often in this world, all of us get wrapped up in expectations of what we think other’s should be saying or doing.

Strive to cast aside expectations and realize that our expectations of someone else may not have anything to do with who they really are. It’s also out of our control to change someone else, only our own actions, words, and thoughts.

So just let him know you love, appreciate, and SEE everything he does for you and the kids. That alone is enough.

What’s the difference between a father and a dad?

ANYONE can father a child. It doesn’t really take that much.

But to be a Dad is so much more, AND so vitally important. Make no mistake, 1 loving parent is better than 2 who fight all the time, and 2 loving Moms raising a child is also better than 2 parents who fight all the time.

BUT, a good Dad has a vitally important role to play when possible.

Often times Mom rules the roost, takes care of the child’s needs and provides that nurturing that is so important, but it’s Dad who instills that sense of adventure, playfulness, and fun.

I’m stereotyping and generalizing, of course, and certainly don’t mean to imply anything to the contrary as there are obviously going to be exceptions.

Even with men who are present with their kids, there can still be a difference between a father and a dad.

Some of the things I do to show up for my kids every day are:

  • Play with them on their level
  • I protect them, but not to the degree where they don’t learn how to pick themselves up again
  • Apologize when I make a mistake
  • I listen to them and put myself in their shoes
  • If I promise to do something or show up for an event, THAT is the #1 priority
  • I put their needs ahead of my own, about 98% of the time
  • Encourage, don’t squash, playfulness, and imagination

But don’t take my word for it.

I recently had Jennifer Hayes O’Neill, LMSW, former Executive Director of the Early Childhood Counseling Center, write an article for me about the Benefits of Father Involvement, and it’s truly worth your time for a quick read.

What should I write for Father’s Day?

It’s sometimes hard to know what to say to your father or your children’s father.

A lot of Dads tend to be the strong, silent type where you don’t always know exactly what they’re feeling, and don’t always connect deeply on an emotional level.

So these great Father’s Day quotes are the perfect solution for your Father’s Day plans this year!

I literally scoured the web, looking at dozens of sites and hundreds of Father’s Day quotes.

If you just Google great Father’s Day quotes, a lot comes up.  Unfortunately, a lot of them are not great.  Too basic, too generic, too sarcastic, overused or about as emotional as a physics textbook.

Thus the list I’ve got here represents the best of the best.  I’ve culled the mediocre and boring to bring you only the . . .

Visit Guanacaste Costa Rica – Your Ultimate 2024 Travel Guide

visit Guanacaste Costa Rica Costa Rica volcano Middle Class Dad

My family and I love to travel all across Costa Rica. We especially love to visit Guanacaste Costa Rica.

Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica in a state on the Pacific side of the country in the northern half. The capital is Liberia, which is also the best airport to fly into. Guanacaste has pristine beaches, jungles, mountains, volcanos, and 7 of the country’s national parks. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north.

I think we can all agree there is nothing better than a vacation where everyone, from kids to parents, has an amazing time, every time. To connect with one another in such a beautiful setting is an amazing and transformative thing.

So in this ultimate travel guide, we’re diving deep into the northwestern province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica.

We’ll look at the best beaches, national parks, wildlife, activities and the best ways to travel through this amazing place.

Ultimately, you’ll fully understand why I think you should visit Guanacaste Costa Rica for the vacation of a lifetime.

Is Costa Rica a good place to visit?

Good is probably an understatement.

Personally, I have been there 4 times. My oldest daughter Astrid’s first beach and ocean experience were along the Pacific coast of Guanacaste Costa Rica.

We love the ease of traveling there. It’s amazingly easy (but not quick) to get around the country (driving in the Capital of San José being the main exception).  We love the people, the food, the wildlife, the beaches, and so much more.

To say it’s beautiful, peaceful, tranquil or amazing doesn’t really justify it.  After all, you could probably think of a lot of places you could describe that way.

No; to visit Guanacaste Costa Rica, or anywhere in Costa Rica, is just something altogether different.

What is Guanacaste Costa Rica known for?

Guanacaste is one of the most popular states (what they call provinces) in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste is known as a tropical paradise with breathtaking beaches, amazing mountains, and multiple volcanoes. Tourists seek out beautiful weather and abundant wildlife.

Guanacaste is in the northwest area of Costa Rica just under Nicaragua (which it was once a part of).

Costa Rica’s slogan is Pura Vida which translates into English as “pure life”. Nothing sums up what it means to visit Guanacaste Costa Rica (or any part of Costa Rica) more than that phrase.

Guanacaste’s unique culture stems, in part, from once being part of Nicaragua during the pre-Columbian era.

Certain Guanacaste has been part of Costa Rica for some time now,  but you can still see Nicaragua’s influence there in the people, food, and culture. But history aside, there are hundreds of reasons to visit Guanacaste Costa Rica.

Make sure to check out my Costa Rica Travel Resource List with links to everything you need!

What ocean is Guanacaste Costa Rica?

Guanacaste runs up and down a large part the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

So the Pacific ocean is what you will see and play in. The other side of Costa Rica is the Caribbean.

As you would expect, this amazing area features some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Tamarindo is one of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica.

It stays sunny all year, and the weather with temperatures varying between 73°-81° and low humidity. Lots of activities are available from this awesome touristy town from zip-lining, hiking, snorkeling, surfing, and more.

That being said, EVERYONE loves Tamarindo and thus it is a bustling tourist town.

Personally, my favorite beach in Costa Rica is Playa Conchal, north of Tamarindo near the town of Brasilito.

Those are our daughters (before the arrival of daughter #3) playing on the mostly deserted beach of Playa Conchal!

While there is a nearby Westin Resort with its own private beach access, there’s still plenty of amazing beach to explore (see my picture above). We have been to at least 10 beaches in Costa Rica, far from all, but this has been our favorite hands down.

We’ve never seen more than 20 or 30 people when we’ve been, and while that could be an anomaly, it definitely is one of the less crowded beaches.  Just drive down a dirt road past the howler monkey-lined trees and pull right up onto the sand, 30 feet from the water’s edge.

Playa Hermosa is another great beach for visitors looking to avoid popular tourist areas. It’s also very close to a number of amazing areas like Santa Rosa National Park and Rincon de la Vieja National Park, among others, and you will see amazing wildlife and scenery there.

Some beaches are rockier than others and some are more black sand than white sand.

So explore all of them while you visit Guanacaste Costa Rica! Some other ones to visit would include Playas del Coco (our original beach experience), Playa Ocotal, Playa Panama, Playa Flamingo, Playa Brasilito and many others.

What is the average temperature in Costa Rica?

The average highs fluctuate between 75 and 80 degrees.  The average lows fluctuate between 58 and 62 degrees.  Basically, it’s a paradise all year; not too hot, not too cold.

The summer and early fall are considered the rainy season in most parts of the country, but in my experience has been twice at different points during this time, you get a little (sometimes no) rain in the early afternoon; the perfect time to return home for a nap.  Travel during this time can be considerably cheaper and for us, there’s almost no difference.

Want heat? spend time on the coast.

Want cooler days and almost chilly nights? Head inland.

What is the rainy season in Guanacaste Costa Rica?

The rainy season is from May to mid-November except for the Caribbean coast.

I have been to Costa Rica in August, July, December, and January and always had a great time and great weather, even in the rainy season. In fact, I kind of prefer to go during the so-called rainy season, because it’s less touristy.

As I said, Costa Rica varies between 75 and 80 degrees for the highs (on average) and lows around 60.

The Caribbean coast is generally humid and rainy all year. It’s also a bit of a trek to get there, so I’ve never been. But for the rest of the country, we’re talking about 5 months out of the year.

BUT, when I have been there in the rainy season if it rained at all (which it didn’t every day), it rained for about an hour around 1 pm. So it was really perfect to go out and do stuff, grab some lunch, and then come back to the house for a nap, or just sit and listen to the rain.

Is Guanacaste safe?

Yes is the short answer, but always use the same precautions you would normally follow when visiting a new place.

I have ALWAYS felt safe in Guanacaste.

In fact, in terms of safety, that is the main reason I haven’t been back to Mexico in 14 years and never taken my kids there (aside from the crossing in Big Bend). By comparison, Costa Rica is amazingly safe, peaceful and tranquil.

For starters, unlike Mexico where Federales armed with assault rifles abound, Costa Rica abandoned its military in 1948. I’m sure crime exists there as it does anywhere; especially in San José which is the only real large city.

But when we visit Guanacaste Costa Rica, we don’t go there for the big city experience so we prefer the quiet countryside and beach settings.  Take the same precautions you would traveling anywhere, but we find visiting Costa Rica to be perfectly safe.

We’ve traveled all over the Pacific side as far south as Jaco (a popular surf town) to almost as far north as the border to Nicaragua.  We have also traveled inland to mountains, volcanos, and hot springs. In doing so, we’ve met some great people and befriended more than a few.

Crime is probably the highest in the capital of San José, which is to be expected as it’s a big, bustling city with a similar vibe to New York.

The U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory gives Costa Rica a Level 1 for crime and safety. 1 is the lowest rating on a scale of 1 to 4 and comes with the recommendation “exercise normal precautions”.

What vaccinations do I need for Costa Rica?

In short, unless you are traveling from a country known for being at high risk of yellow fever outbreaks, no vaccines are required to visit Costa Rica.

That being said, the CDC and WHO do recommend the following vaccinations if you are planning to visit:

  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow fever
  • Rabies
  • Meningitis
  • Polio
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
  • Chickenpox
  • Shingles
  • Pneumonia
  • Influenza

That’s a long and scary-sounding list, and no place on Earth is completely safe in terms of infectious diseases.

But I can tell you as a frequent traveler to Costa Rica and one who took his one-year-old daughter there, we have NEVER done anything out of the ordinary in terms of vaccines when preparing for a trip.

Costa Rica Culture

Locals refer to themselves as “Ticos” and we have found nothing but peaceful, friendly & warm folks who love the land, love their country and are happy to share it.

Unlike some other predominantly Spanish speaking countries, Costa Rica has a literacy rate of 96%; they value the education of their over 4 million citizens!

Also over 70% of the population falls into the middle class, making it distinctly different from some other countries too. Statistics courtesy of The Real Costa Rica and Tropical Daily.

Costa Rica values life.  The country also values its natural resources. I noted this a little bit in the passage above.

About 25% of the total land in Costa Rica is dedicated to national parks or other protected lands; 26 national parks in total; amazing for a country of Costa Rica’s size! Even in small remote villages, you see recycling stations; that speaks volumes about the country’s dedication to the land and preserving their natural beauty.

Costa Rica is also a melting pot with people both visiting and living there from all over the world. Upwards of 9% of the population moved to Costa Rica from other countries.

Nicaragua accounts for the largest number of immigrants, but Colombia, Spain and the USA are 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

So while the country’s native tongue is certainly Spanish, it’s not uncommon to find plenty of other languages there too and lots of folks speak English (but knowing a little bit of Spanish is definitely helpful!)

Costa Rica habitats

Costa Rica has the rainforests, it has the beaches (both Pacific and Caribbean) as well as volcanos and general tropical areas. It also has islands, such as Isla Tortuga which we have visited.

We’ve driven to the mountains, hiked through a forest to find natural hot springs.  We’ve driven up volcanos, we’ve lounged on beaches near troops of howler monkeys.

Natural beauty of all kinds abounds in Costa Rica.  Breathtaking views, amazing landscapes and a wide variety of scenery make up Costa Rica.

Aside from snow, there’s not much you can’t find here.

Are there sloths in Guanacaste?

For the most part, no. You are not likely to see sloths (in the wild) in Guanacaste. They tend to be a little more inland in forested areas with medium elevation.

There are two types of sloths in Costa Rica:

  • Brown-throated sloth – the smaller of the 2 sloths, more active, and more of them
  • Hoffman’s two-toed sloth – larger, fewer of them, and nocturnal

Hoffman’s two-toed sloth is primarily nocturnal. So most likely if you do see a sloth it will be the brown-throated sloth. But you may sometimes see a sleeping 2 toed sloth.

Brown-throated sloths are not found in high-elevation colder areas, but in general, you’re most likely to see either species in one of these areas:

  • Vara Blanca
  • Dominical
  • Manuel Antonio
  • Nuevo Arenal
  • Tortuguero
  • Limon
  • Bijagua
  • Osa Peninsula

Having said that, you will see an abundance of wildlife in Guanacaste.

On our trips, we have seen the following in the wild:

  • Macaws (a little south of Guanacaste)
  • Howler Monkeys
  • Iguanas
  • Magpie Jays (a really cool bird that apparently is viewed as a pigeon there, but looks like a blue jay with a parrot tail and a huge black plume sticking up on its head)

Of course, we’ve seen tons of other animals and lizards too; those are just the well-known ones. Depending on what part of the country you’re in, you may see all of those or none of those.

To me, that’s the beauty of nature; we’re at its mercy.  It’s not on display for our amusement, so we have to learn to live with it and appreciate it on its terms.

Costa Rica National Parks

Costa Rica features an amazing 27 National parks. 7 of those are in Guanacaste.

In fact, over 25% of Costa Rica is reserved for national parks (and other wildlife conservation areas). Thus, perhaps more than any other country in the world, Costa Rica is dedicated to protecting its amazing wildlife and preserving their environment.

Here are some of the best National Parks to see when you visit Guanacaste Costa Rica:

  • Santa Rosa National Park – One of the country’s 1st National Parks, Santa Rosa features heavily forested areas but also pristine white sand beaches. The famous Hacienda Santa Rosa monument (known as La Casona) stands to commemorate fallen heroes from old battles. Camp here to experience everything Costa Rica wildlife and nature have to offer.
  • Guanacaste National Park – Guanacaste National Park was founded in 1989.  It connects Santa Rosa National Park with the Caribbean rainforest of Northern Costa Rica, stretching across cloud forests and volcanos as it goes. Cross the continental divide and see rainforests that make up much of the Caribbean sideAs you hike, you’ll no doubt see javelina (similar to wild boar), howler monkeys, bats, and capuchin monkeys. Being in the northern part of Guanacaste, you’ll also see white-throated magpie jays which are some of our favorite birds (although many locals think of them as we do pigeons. Picture a blue jay with a parrot-like tail and a black feathery mohawk.
  • Rincon de la Vieja National Park – A true one-of-a-kind destination containing volcanos, breathtaking waterfalls, cloud forests and amazing wildlife such as sloths, jaguars, pumas, tapirs and more. There are 9 volcanic craters in the park and you can hike up on trails that up for a bird’s eye view. This park alone encompasses almost 35,000 acres!

Travel Tips When You Visit Guanacaste Costa Rica

Visiting Guanacaste, or any part of Costa Rica is going to be an amazing time.

But there are some good tips I’ve learned in my 5 visits, so I just want to review them now, so you can make the most of your next (or first) visit.

Renting a car in Guanacaste

I strongly recommend a rental car as it’s simply the best way to get around.

Driving in San José was not unlike driving in NYC, but aside from that, as long as you’re not in a hurry, driving is a piece of cake in all the areas I’ve been to.  I have rented from a number of companies and all the major car rental companies you are used to have offices there.

That being said, I like a local company called Vamos.

If you check out online reviews, you’ll see many with terrible reviews (many for good reason).  Vamos is just about the only one with consistently good reviews and in my experience, they earn it!

Don’t be surprised that most car rental companies want a deposit (on credit card) of between $700-$1,000.  That is standard here.  Most don’t actually charge that; they just put a hold for it.

Vamos doesn’t do it, but some companies actually want you to sign a blank credit card carbon-copy imprint form with no amount specified!  I also like that Vamos allows me to use a debit card (we don’t have any credit cards and some places insist on it).

I don’t get the extra insurance coverage when I rent in the US, as my insurance typically already covers that, but here most insurance companies don’t cover it. Thus between the potholes and occasional dirt and gravel roads, it’s not a bad idea to go ahead and get it.

Thus when you’re done; you just drop it off no questions asked and no inspection needed.

Will my cell phone GPS work in Costa Rica?

I have always had my smartphone work in Costa Rica and never had an issue getting around using my phone’s map apps. Thus an old-fashioned paper map probably isn’t necessary. Do check with your provider and verify if you will get service in Costa Rica but on the Tmobile network, I’ve never had a problem.

How do you get to Guanacaste Costa Rica?

If you’re wondering what airport do you fly into for Guanacaste Costa Rica,  the Liberia airport in Guanacaste is the one you want.

In fact, I have only ever flown into Liberia, the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport, which is far north of the Capital of San José. Liberia is a far easier city to drive in and it’s close to many of our favorite destinations.

They rebuilt the airport a few years back and now it’s just as modern as any mid-sized airport in the US.

Do be aware the food at the airport is more expensive than airport food in the US. So unless you want to pay $15 for a Quiznos sandwich, plan to bring snacks with you while waiting or eat before you get there.  The restaurants close to the airport are a little pricey too.

There are a million ways to book airfare, but I almost always use Travelocity and have for over a decade.

All the major airlines fly to Costa Rica including Southwest Airlines.

Can you fly direct to Costa Rica?

Yes, is the short answer. From many US cities, direct flights are about 3 hours.

You can have your 10 hour, multi-leg flights to Hawaii; I’ll be lounging in Costa Rica long before you get off the plane (no offense to Hawaiians; it’s just a trek for most of us to get there, and far costlier too!)

In fact, all of the times we have been to Costa Rica have been direct flights out of either Dallas or Houston. We live (now) in the Austin, TX area so if we were to fly out of the Austin airport, I don’t believe there is a direct flight.

But if you live close to a major metropolitan area, chances are you have a direct flight into the Liberia airport in Guanacaste.

Unlike getting to places like Hawaii, a direct flight to Costa Rica from the US is about 3 hours!

How far is Liberia from Guanacaste Costa Rica?

Liberia is IN Guanacaste. It’s actually the Capital of Guanacaste.

In fact, Liberia is just north of being in the center of the Guanacaste province.  Think of a province as a state in the US. Guanacaste is just under 4,000 square miles.

By comparison, Texas (where I live) is 268,581 square miles. So you could fit Guanacaste into Texas 67 times!

So Guanacaste, like all provinces in Costa Rica is not that big. It does, however, take longer to drive places due to mostly 2 lane roads, occasional dirt or gravel roads, and much slower speed limits (which are in kilometers, not miles).

What is the best city to stay in Costa Rica?

Best is a very subjective term.

Much of Guanacaste Costa Rica is similar. You have the beaches on the coast and the inland areas are both dry and rain forests, tropical jungles, and a few volcanos. The Capital of Costa Rica is San José, which is far south of Guanacaste.

San José is a bustling metropolitan city similar to New York.

While I love the energy of New York, when I go to Costa Rica, it’s to get away from that kind of energy. So we usually steer way clear of San José.

Here are some of the most popular cities in Costa Rica, both in, and outside of Guanacaste:

Tamarindo

It’s a touristy surf town in Guanacaste south of Liberia right on the beach.

It’s touristy, but I still love it, despite it being crowded, a little pricey, and hard to park in. Great restaurants, nice beaches, nightlife, good-sized waves are just a few of the reasons to go. Aside from surfing, it’s also a favorite for eco-travelers too.

Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio is located in the province of Puntarenas, south of Guanacaste.

It’s south of Quepos on the Pacific side and is one of the top tourist destinations. It features rain forests, pristine beaches, and amazing coral reefs.

Considered the most beautiful place in all of Costa Rica (which is saying something given how beautiful the country is as a whole), it also features Manuel Antonio National Park.

Jacó

Another surfing village similar to Tamarindo, also located in Puntarenas, south of Guanacaste.

This is the only place I’ve ever seen macaws in the wild and apparently they are pretty abundant here. Whether you’re into surfing, fishing, hiking, or lounging at top resorts, you’ll find what you want in Jacó.

Puerto Viejo

Located on the Caribbean side which can be hard to get to.

Only a few roads go across Costa Rica from Pacific to the Caribbean, so do be prepared to drive for a few hours, but Puerto Viejo and the nearby Cahuita National Park provide a rare opportunity to see amazing wildlife.

Compared to the rest of Costa Rica, the Caribbean side also sees a unique blend of Latin, Afro-Caribbean, and Bribri cultures. The Bribri are an indigenous people of Costa Rica.

Arenal & La Fortuna

Arenal volcano is Costa Rica’s most well-known volcano, although it has been dormant for 43 years.

The small village La Fortuna sits at the foot of the volcano. Breathtaking views, amazing waterfalls, natural volcanic hot springs set in the lush tropical surroundings.

Perfect for adventure-lovers, honeymooners, families, backpackers, or those who just want to lounge in a beautiful setting.

Monteverde

Monteverde is a small village in the Puntarenas province south of Guanacaste.  It is also considered a major tourist destination because of the abundance of both rain and cloud forests.

It was recently picked as one of Costa Rica’s Seven Wonders.

Potrero

But our favorite town to stay in and use as a jumping off point to the rest of Guanacaste is Potrero which isn’t likely to show up in the guide books.

Potrero is basically a small fishing village. But it has nice beaches, friendly people, inexpensive houses to rent, some great fruit and vegetable stands, and some nice restaurants and shops. But what it doesn’t have are mobs of tourists overwhelming it.

While Costa Rica does have your typical resorts like Westin or Four Seasons, you may prefer to do what we do and rent a house.

We have used a variety of travel sites to find the places we have stayed, most often AirBnB and FlipKey (similar site owned by Trip Advisor).

We prefer to stay in houses.  That way we can prepare meals rather than eat out every meal. The last place we stayed had 2 bedrooms, outdoor kitchen & living room adjacent to a pool and it was only $90/night!

What can you do in Costa Rica?

visit Guanacaste Costa Rica Middle Class Dad snorkling off Isla Tortuga on a Calypso Cruise

Here is my oldest daughter Astrid and I snorkeling off Isla Tortuga.

There is actually a ton of stuff to do in Costa Rica if lounging on world-class beaches, picking fresh tropical fruit from a tree in your front yard, or swimming in your private house’s swimming pool isn’t enough.

We have hiked in nature preserves, visited animal sanctuaries, trekked to natural volcanic hot springs in the middle of a forest, just to name a few things.

But 2 of our favorite things are:

ZIP LINING – To visit Costa Rica at some point, for many, means zip lining (often referred to as a canopy tour).

We’ve only done it once and there are hundreds of places offering it, but we loved Turu Ba Ri Nature & Adventure Park (also south of Guanacaste, but there’s plenty of zip lining in Guanacaste too).

Great zip lining, nature hikes, wildlife, and good food too!

ISLAND TOURS – We have only done this once as for us and our budget, it’s a little extravagant, but it was SO worth it! And of course, I have to say this is a little south of the state of Guanacaste in the state of Puntarenas.

We used the amazing Calypso Cruises to go from Puntarenas to Isla Tortuga (turtle island).

The boat was amazing (2 small swimming pools, fresh fruit, full bar), but the island was breathtaking and almost no one else was there.  We dined on the island, pet the wild pigs and went snorkeling too.

We couldn’t recommend them more highly.  If you go, I sure hope Charlie is on your boat!

While it’s always been a family destination for us, Costa Rica is also an amazing honeymoon destination or romantic getaway, so if you’re in need of one of those, check out my very popular post on the Best Places to Stay in Costa Rica for Couples.

What is Trekking All About: Beginner Tips, vs Hiking & Benefits

what is trekking all about? Middle Class Dad woman on the top of a tree lined mounatin looking out over a valley as the sun peaks through the clouds

Wondering what is trekking all about, how it differs from hiking, the best beginner’s tips for trekking, trekking benefits and where to go?

Here’s what I’ve discovered:

Trekking is an extended, multi-day backpacking hike often in remote, mountainous regions. While often done in groups, trekking locations are often only accessible by foot. Benefits include mental detox & stress management. Beginners should carry plenty of water, rest often, and bring an MP3 player for entertainment.

Walking across the countryside on narrow trails has always been a trend. Humans have always been true children of Mother Nature.

But slowly, the modern world began to overlook the importance of people being in nature. Then, people started to feel the absence and longed to find ways to reconnect to Mother Earth.

As National Parks, state parks, and other wilderness areas began to crop up in the last century, more and more people began to seek out the peace and serenity that comes from being in nature.

Hiking and trekking are two of the favorite ways people use to come close to nature in the modern era. These two are also very popular vacation activities and destinations.

So in this post, we’re diving deep into trekking.

We’ll cover what it is, how it differs from hiking, what you need to get started, beginner tips, and the types of trekking.

Ultimately, we’ll answer the question, “what is trekking all about?”

Thinking of planning a trek soon? Definitely take a moment and check out all our best travel resources for the absolute best prices on all your travel needs!

What is trekking?

Adventure is a word that comes into the mind of a person when he/she hears about trekking.

The activity is all about exploring difficult paths in secluded areas such as mountains and hilly terrains. In places where there are no means of transportation, trekking is common.

Along with getting thrilled with the beauty of nature, a trekkers’ major aim is to accept the challenge of adventurous paths to feel extreme inner stimulation.

One requires having a strong body and stamina in order to complete a trek successfully. Many treks take over a couple of weeks to complete depending on the distance of the trail. If you are a beginner in the field of trekking, it is good to opt for basic level treks.

Trekking is quite popular in South Asian countries as people from all corners of the world visit there for a magnificent experience.

What is Hiking?

Hiking simply means walking on a trail that was already established.

It might be a paved trail, gravel, or just dirt and rock, but someone has already gone through the trouble of clearing it and making it easy for others to walk on.

It is mainly a leisurely activity that people enjoy on weekends.

Hiking has its roots in an era, a very long time ago, when people used to reside in villages and countrysides. Thus to get anywhere, or even just a picnic with their family, they often had to rely on hiking trails to get where they wanted to go.

In many parts of the world, people still travel a long distance on foot to reach a certain place and spend a couple of hours there before returning home.

Hiking is usually a one-day affair, although multi-days hikes that are usually very long in distance are also popular. Typically when one is hiking for multiple days, the term backpacking becomes more common.

Anybody, who loves greenery and the beauty of nature, can go on hiking without much preparation and enjoy the natural environment.

What is the difference between trekking and hiking?

The first difference is that the paths of hiking trails are easier than trekking trails.

As we mentioned above, hiking trails are typically man-made, level, well cleared, and sometimes even paved. This makes it easy to take a leisurely hike without much preparation or thought.

Trekking, however, is a lot more challenging.

It often requires significant endurance, has greater risks involved, doesn’t necessarily involved a man-made path, and can really test one’s mental and emotional states as well.

While some hikes are multi-day, most people hike for a few hours, whereas treks are usually multi-day. One plus of trekking is that some trekking tours drive supplies to specified locations along the trek so trekkers can replenish their food and water.

In many ways, backpacking and trekking are very similar, but backpacking is done in a wide variety of places whereas trekking is often done in isolated mountainous regions around the globe.

What is the difference between trekking and mountaineering?

In short, while hiking, backpacking, trekking, and mountaineering are all similar, they all have significant differences too.

In fact, if we were going to say any 2 were basically the same it would probably be trekking and backpacking. But then you’ll get some pushback on that too from the outdoors community.

We’ve already defined hiking and trekking, so here we’re focusing on mountaineering.

Essentially, mountaineering is like trekking, but even more challenging, and, as the name implies, is focused solely on mountain destinations.

Like trekking, mountaineering is also a multi-day affair, but unlike hiking and trekking, mountaineering is not something to just do without significant training and preparation.

Mountaineers will often find themselves rock climbing, using pickaxes, and have to be trained to deal with a variety of challenges such as:

  • Avalanches
  • Large cracks in the ice
  • Blinding snowstorms
  • Glaciers
  • Altitude sickness

So if you’re ready to climb Mount Everest, then you’re ready for mountaineering. If not, start off with some basic trekking first and work your way up.

What are the benefits of trekking?

Anytime we are able to unplug, disconnect from work, bills, and day to day stresses, we come back more energized and more recharged than ever before.

When we do that by challenging ourselves physically and mentally while immersed in the beauty of nature, that’s even truer.

The top benefits of trekking include:

  • Helping manage stress
  • General fitness & strength building
  • Detoxing your mind and body
  • Connecting with other like-minded people
  • Seeing amazing places & wildlife you might never see otherwise
  • Improved understanding of other cultures

As you trek, typically in a group, you will leave the “real” world behind.

We also tend to leave behind our bad habits too (too much coffee and alcohol, snack foods, etc). We also tend to drink more water, and while you will be physically exerting yourself, your mind will be refreshed and renewed by being immersed in the beauty.

Because you’ll be WAY off the beaten path, you’re also likely to see places and animals you might otherwise never see.

What should I eat during trekking?

If you’re part of an organized trek with food stops along the way, it may not matter as much, but otherwise, you’ll want to think about:

  • Lightweight foods (since they’ll be in your backpack)
  • Foods with minimal packaging (since you’ll be taking the waste with you)
  • Things that can be eaten right out of the package
  • Or foods that take minimal prep (so you aren’t carrying a bunch of cooking supplies)

Of course, since you’ll be very physically active, it will be important to choose items with really good nutrition; high calorie, low sugar, minimally processed, with good proteins and carbs for energy.

What should I wear for trekking?

You’ll want to bring lightweight things since you’ll be carrying them on your back, but of course, you’ll also want to make sure you’re prepared for the weather and the elements.

Layering your clothes is a great strategy since you can shed or add layers quickly and easily depending on the weather.

Of course, functional clothing is a must, and breathable fabrics are crucial too.

While most of us normally gravitate to 100% cotton clothing, out in the wilderness, that’s not always the best choice since it’s slow drying, doesn’t keep excess moisture off skin and doesn’t insulate that well.

Wool, poly/nylon blends and even silks are all great choices.

You probably also want zipper pockets to ensure nothing falls out, and quick drying fabrics in case you get wet.

What should I buy for trekking?

For your first trek, you may want to consider a guided trek with a company that will let you know everything you need to bring.

But in general, aside from clothes, an expandable lightweight backpack, and food which we addressed above, you’ll want to consider the following items:

  • A sturdy water bottle (one that can clip on a belt or backpack)
  • Comfortable hiking or trekking shoes/boots (don’t skimp on this!)
  • A Swiss Army Knife
  • A flashlight (ideally a longlasting one with a spare bulb and waterproof is even better)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Natural sunscreen
  • A waterproof phone case (or at least carry it in a sealed ziplock)
  • A paper map of your trek (in case GPS doesn’t work)
  • Basic first aid kit (burn cream, antibacterial cream, bandages, etc)
  • Trekking/hiking pole (ideal for assisting in uneven terrain)
  • Fully charged phone powerbank (in case your phone dies)
  • Sunglasses (there’s nothing more blinding that bright sun on a snow-covered mountain)

Basic Hiking and Trekking tips for beginners:

As a beginner, you should start with moderate level treks.

10-20 mile trails (20-30 km) are good to start with. As a total beginner, consider starting on level terrains before starting to explore more challenging paths.

Triund and Nag Tibba in Uttrakhand, India are good examples of basic level treks.

Some of the more challenging treks are – Upper Dolpo Trek (Nepal), Chadar Trek (India), Devil’s Path (New York), The Long Range Traverse (Canada), etc.

Some suggestions for beginners:

  • During the journey, carry a water bottle and keep yourself hydrated
  • Take your time to reach the summit and do not push yourself much
  • Rest whenever you feel exhausted
  • Avoid unnecessary items in your backpack
  • Listen to music on an MP3 player to keep yourself entertained
  • Don’t trek alone

These are the things my mom taught me.” and “To describe my Mother would be to write about to write about a hurricane in its perfect power”.

Why a mother is important in our life

Mothers, like all people, are imperfect.

They struggle, they make mistakes, and no doubt, have let us down at some point. But they also have 1 role that absolutely no one else on the planet can fulfill.

They are responsible for giving birth to you; to literally breathing life into you.

Without your mother you would not exist. THAT is the 1st reason your mother is one of the, if not THE most important person in your life.

The Role of a Parent in a Child’s Life is ever-changing as we get older.

Our mother and father model the behavioral traits we eventually take on. Mom provides the loving, nurturing environment that allows our creativity to flourish and our cognitive development to grow.

But beyond birthing you, for most of us, our mother was also our first:

  • Protector
  • Teacher
  • Inspiration
  • Motivation

And our guiding light. For many of us, Mom was the one who was always there through thick and thin. Flawed, fallible, but irreplaceable.

What are the qualities of a good mother?

I identified above what our mother means to many of us, and some of the roles she has played for us over the years.

A good mother doesn’t have any illusions about being perfect, but she does strive to learn from her mistakes and to get a little bit better each and every day.

Similar to the Qualities of a Good Father, a good mother actively spends time and engages with her kids, often puts the needs of the child above her own, takes ownership when she slips up, and is always there to guide without being over-protective.

But a “good mother” isn’t just one thing.

There are many different kinds of great mothers and each mother (and father) is different from day to day.

That being said, there are some common Parenting Styles Child Psychologists Prefer.

Curious as to what those are? I highly recommend you take just a moment and review my highly shared post.

What do you say on Mother’s Day?

Most of us lack the words, descriptive imagination and depth of feeling to really convey on paper everything we feel.

So these Mother’s Day quotes are the perfect solution for your Mother’s Day plans this year!

I literally scoured the web, looking at dozens of sites and hundreds of Mother’s Day quotes.

If you just Google Mother’s Day inspirational quotes, a lot comes up.  Unfortunately, a lot of them are not great.  Too basic, too generic, too sarcastic, overused or about as emotional as a physics textbook.

Many are OK but by people you’ve never heard of.

So the list I’ve got here represents the best of the best.  I’ve culled the mediocre and boring to bring you only the best . . .

How to Paint Walls with Bullnose Corners

Bullnose corners are rounded corners and if you’re painting them different colors, it can be really tricky. I needed to do some painting and wondered how to paint walls with bullnose corners.

To paint a wall with bullnose or rounded corners, you can either have the primary color go all the way around the curve to where the next wall’s flat part starts and place your painter’s tape there, or, with a good eye, you can run your painter’s tape down the center of the curve and split the colors evenly.

But there’s a lot more that goes into painting rounded corners, so let’s dig in a little further.

What is a bullnose corner?

Bullnose corners are rounded corners on the edges of walls when going from one wall to another.

Originally they were primarily used in concrete and adobe structures where perfect 90° angled walls were hard to do. But these days, they have actually come into popularity with drywall in homes.

Bullnose or rounded corners, give a home a more polished look and have become quite popular.

How to add bullnose corners to a house

When the walls and sheetrock have just gone in on a house, it’s easy to add bullnose corners.

Typically where 2 pieces of sheetrock (drywall) meet at a corner, you would attach what’s called a bead. A bead is essentially a piece of metal, plastic, or vinyl that is a perfect 90° angle.

You add a coat of joint compound on the sheetrock and then place it at the corner where the 2 pieces of drywall meet. Nail or staple it into place. Then you simply add a topcoat of joint compound to get it ready to paint.

For bullnose corners, you simply buy a bullnose bead instead of a regular 90° angle bead, but the installation is exactly the same.

If, however, you want to add bullnose corners to an existing house, you’ll need to remove the existing bead and baseboards, sand the joint down and apply the bullnose bead as I outlined above.

Then you’ll need to replace the baseboards with new ones that can accommodate the bullnose.

How to paint a corner where two colors meet

how to paint walls with bullnose corners Middle Class Dad wall with half pink and half seafoam green with an old alarm clock right on the paint line

First things first. Since these colors will be seen at the same time, make sure they look good together.

Then decide which wall and color is the most important and least important (primary and secondary).

It might not seem like it would matter, but we’re not going to paint on the rounded part, we’re going all the way around the corner to the next wall for our line. Thus, it’s important to have 1 color and wall as the primary.

Once you know your primary and secondary walls, run a line of painter’s tape from top to bottom on the secondary wall around the corner from the primary wall.

You want the tape to be right where the rounded corner stops, so probably not much more than 1/2 inch onto the secondary wall. Line the edge of the tape up so you can paint the primary wall and have that color around the corner right to where it gets flat.

Paint as many coats as you need to and then allow to dry fully. Then run a new strip of paint on the newly painted wall right to the edge of the new color. Then paint your secondary wall.

How to paint walls with curved edges on the center of the curve

If the idea of having your primary color bleed into the room or section where the secondary color is driving you crazy and you insist on painting down the center of the bullnose, follow these tips.

Again use painter’s tape to run a line of tape from top to bottom, but this time down the exact center of your rounded corner.

From almost any amount of distance, this will fool the eye into making it look like a 90° angle.

The hard part here is getting the tape in exactly the right place all the way up and down. But once you have the tape in place, the painting process is simple and exactly the same as the above section.

How to paint a wall two different colors divided

Sometimes you just want 2 different colors in a room where there isn’t a rounded corner.

Let’s say, for instance, you want a faux beadboard look in a dining room. Sometimes called wainscoting, beadboard is simply paneling that goes up a wall from the baseboards, usually 3′ or maybe 4 feet up max.

It’s a classic look, hundreds of years old, and also an easy way to cover damaged walls.

But if you just want to simulate that with paint, it’s easy! Decide how far up the wall from the baseboards you want to go and mark with a pencil, using a tape measure, about 2 feet or so across the wall.

Then come back painter’s tape and run all the way across the wall to protect the top part of the wall.

Then simply paint the lower part of the wall being sure not to go all the way past your painter’s tape.

If you are painting both sections of the wall, do one first, allow to dry and then run more painter’s tape at the edge of the newly painted part and paint the other section.

The easiest way to paint a straight line

Most of us simply don’t possess a steady enough hand to paint a perfectly straight line. If you do, that’s awesome!

For the rest of us, painter’s tape is the best way to go in terms of getting a clean, crisp perfectly straight line.

As an added measure you can first mark in pencil using a tape measure and then come back with a level, straight edge or yardstick and draw a perfectly straight line to match your painter’s tape to.

Sometimes getting the painter’s tape down perfectly is a little tricky.

The good news is that painter’s tape is easy to work with and easy to peel off and reapply. Do make a point of getting GOOD painter’s tape. This is not the place to cut corners and just get whatever’s cheapest.

Cheap painter’s tape will bleed through, especially if your walls have a lot of texture on them.

How to paint a straight line on heavily textured walls

Textured walls look awesome!

But for DIY handymen and women, they can be a bit of a pain. For one they make using a stud finder a lot harder as all the bumps set off the little magnet. But they also make painting straight lines a lot harder too.

But let’s say, for instance, you want to paint your walls one color and your ceiling another but there’s a lot of texture (at least on the walls).

Paint the ceiling first and allow to dry.

Then put down painter’s tape on the ceiling where the wall meets the ceiling. Then paint a small amount of your ceiling paint on the walls lapping onto the painter’s tape a little.

I know we’ll be painting the walls a different color, but this trick allows your ceiling paint to seep under the edges of the tape that where the bumps of texture would normally allow your wall paint to go.

Because it’s the ceiling color, it blends into the ceiling, but when you allow to dry and then go back and cleanly paint the wall color up to the edge of the painter’s tape, it will create a much more precise and straight line.

Final Thoughts

In this post, I took a look at the world of painting walls. Specifically, we looked at painting 2 different walls 2 different colors when they have a rounded (bullnose) corner between them.

While it’s not hard to paint, it can be hard to get the color break between the walls to actually look good.

So I walked us through everything I’ve learned from doing a lot of painting in my current house and the last house we had, both of which had bullnose corners.

Now that you know how to paint walls with bullnose corners, time to get out the brushes!

Can Wood Stain be Used on Concrete?

Stained concrete floors are beautiful! But many DIY’ers, including myself, have wondered can wood stain be used on concrete?

Wood stain can be used to stain concrete. However, wood stain will be like painting the concrete where it just sticks to the surface (which over time can scrape off). Acid stain, by comparison, leeches into the concrete and becomes part of the concrete.

But there’s a lot more to know about concrete staining and how wood stain works on it.

Originally used mostly in stores, stained concrete floors came into fashion for homes in the late 1990s. We love the look of the swirled colors, the durability, and the ease of keeping them clean.

So in today’s post, we’ll be exploring some of the top questions about concrete staining. We’ll look at questions around sealers, stain rollers, and concrete curing. But specifically, we’ll answer the question “can wood stain be used on concrete?”

How do you use a stain roller on concrete?

Use a stain roller and a long extended pole to apply stain to concrete. Because stain is thinner than paint, don’t apply too much stain to the roller or it will drip excessively on the concrete.  Roll in one direction only, and make sure to avoid overlapping lines.

For solid color concrete stain (the finished result will look more like you painted it), a roller works just fine.

You’ll want to start with a clean, washed, and dry surface.

As we get into below, you also want to wait at least 30 days if the concrete is new and was just poured. But if your concrete is prepped, clean, and ready to go, simply roll the stain on using long strokes of equal pressure.

Also, make sure the air temp is not too cold or too hot; between 50-90 degrees. 2 coats may be required for the best look.

All that being said if you are using an acid-based stain and/or a transparent or semi-transparent, I would recommend using a backpack sprayer rather than a paint roller.

It will go on smoother and easier and be less likely to show any lines.

The Field King Professional Backpack Sprayer rates 4.5 stars on Amazon with well over 500 reviews. Just click the link to see the current Amazon price.

It comes with free shipping too and is an Amazon’s Choice product, so you know this is the best of the best. I wouldn’t apply concrete stain (and I have) with anything else!

Cleaning concrete floors is one of the best parts about having this type of floor.

Make sure and check out one of my top posts that shows you just how easy is it is to Clean Stained Concrete Floors with Vinegar. My post walks you through the simple and easy process. What really surprised me was how little vinegar you need for a great shine!

How long must concrete cure before staining?

Wait at least 1 month after the concrete was poured before applying stain. Concrete needs to cure completely before staining or sealing, and the curing process allows the excess water in the concrete to evaporate.

If you don’t allow it to evaporate, then any stains or sealers won’t soak into the concrete and may end up flaking off.

However, some brands recommend up to 60 days, so always read the instructions (admittedly hard for some of us guys).

With most acid stains, concrete paints or sealers,

That being said, temperature, humidity, and how stiff the concrete was mixed all factor in too.

So to really be completely safe, I would wait 45 days. After all, what are another 15 days to ensure you end up with really beautiful stained concrete floors?

Can you stain over sealed concrete?

You can stain over sealed concrete. But, you can’t just apply the stain on top of the sealed concrete. If you do, the stain will likely flake off. So first remove the sealer on the floor and stain, or apply a thin layer of acrylic polymer-modified concrete on top of the floors and then apply new stain 24 hours later.

After all, an acid stain is designed to soak into the concrete, not just lay on top of it like a coat of paint.

Thus, if you have sealed floors and don’t treat them, the stain will just sit on the surface and be vulnerable to foot traffic and furniture.

So to apply a stain on sealed concrete, you really have 2 options to ensure it looks good:

  • Remove the sealer and apply the stain
  • Apply a thin layer (1/8″ thick) of acrylic polymer-modified concrete on top of the concrete and apply the stain to that (after at least 24 hours)

Instructions for both methods are below.

Removing sealer from a sealed concrete floor

This is not a fun job, just FYI.

To remove sealer from a concrete floor you can either grind it off by renting a floor sander from Home Depot or you can use a solvent-based stripper to remove it.

Solvent-based strippers (typically Methylene-chloride based) work quickly but as you would imagine they can be hazardous to breathe and dangerous if it gets on your skin, eyes, etc.

Thus make sure you have good ventilation and consider using a respirator.

Once it’s been applied, you’ll be left with a goo mixture on your concrete which must be completely removed.

Use a long-handled floor scraper and scrape the mixture up and dispose into an appropriate container and always follow your state’s regulations on disposal.

Then use hot water and liquid soap to thoroughly clean the floor. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Adding a layer of concrete on top of your concrete floors

  1. Use a floor sander with 60 grit sanding screen over the entire floor. Grind for about 15 minutes using smooth constant slow movement for a room about 15’x15′.
  2. Rinse the floor with a gentle floor cleaner and allow to dry.
  3. Lay down a heavy coat of acrylic primer, using a long-handled paint roller.
  4. Wait at least 10 hours before proceeding with the next step.
  5. Add a 2nd, thinner coat of the primer.
  6. Allow it to dry to the touch.
  7. Apply the polymer-modified concrete overlay, such as Akona® Polymer-Modified Concrete Resurfacer, at 1/8″ thick. Apply using a trowel or long-handled squeegee.
  8. Wait at least 24 hours before proceeding with the next step.
  9. Apply the acid stain using a backpack sprayer. Follow the steps provided by the stain manufacturer, but typically you would allow it to dry for 3-4 hours before applying additional coats as desired.
  10. Once you have applied all the coats of stain you wish to apply, we need to neutralize the acid.
  11. We do this easily by simply mixing TSP and water and mopping it on and scrubbing it in.
  12. Then rinse with water only enough times to completely remove any residue. Use a wet/dry vac to suck up all the extra water.
  13. Allow your new stained concrete to dry for at least 24 hours. Then you can sealer using a water, acrylic or solvent-based sealer and wax if desired.

How much does it cost to stain concrete floors yourself?

The cost to stain a concrete floor yourself is going to start at about $500, including stain, sealer, backpack sprayer, and rental of a floor sander. The size of the room(s) and the condition of the current floor or subfloor can impact that amount significantly though.

If you’re seriously considering staining your concrete floors yourself, you will definitely want to check out my Step-by-Step Concrete Staining Guide of exactly how I did it (including all my mistakes you’ll want to avoid. Just click to read it on my site.

I show you every step of the process and cover all the questions and challenges you’ll likely have.

That being said, which you could easily spend between $2,000-$5,000 hiring a professional, I spent under $500 staining my own concrete floors (a dining room and kitchen).

What is the difference between wood stain and concrete stain?

Wood stain is essentially like thin paint and will coat a concrete floor, sticking to its surface. Acid-based concrete stain, by comparison, chemically reacts to the concrete, and soaks in, becoming a permanent part of the concrete. Non-acid-based concrete stains are also more like paint.

So we know wood stain can be used on concrete.

That being said, I would personally not use wood stain.

While it’s true that places like Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t typically carry acid-based concrete stain, unless you live in the backwoods, most likely there is at least 1 store in your town that deals in professional acid stain products.

Alternately you can also order acid stain on the internet.

The reason I say no to “can wood stain be used on concrete” is that it’s coating the concrete more than becoming part of it.

Concrete is porous and the wood stain may soak in to a degree, but acid stain actually has a chemical reaction with the concrete that helps ensure a smoother and deeper bond between the stain and the floor.

If you absolutely have to use wood stain, just be prepared for it to flake off easily and to reapply it regularly.

Final thoughts

Today we took a fairly quick look into some of the top questions around concrete staining.

We answered questions that many DIYers have on sealed concrete, new concrete and application techniques. But specifically, we answered the question “can wood stain be used on concrete?”

And yes, we technically you can stain concrete with wood stain, I would recommend against that.

17 Best Places to Stay in Costa Rica for Couples You Must See

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. But while it’s fun to go there with kids, sometimes it’s good for couples to just reconnect with only each other. So here, I’ve compiled a list of the best places to stay in Costa Rica for couples.

In our busy everyday lives, whether we’re parents or not, it’s hard to find the time and the right place to just reconnect with our spouse or partner.

Costa Rica, in particular, is an amazing place. It not only features pristine white sand beaches, but also jungles, rain-forest, volcanoes, abundant wildlife, and friendly inviting people.

While Costa Rica is certainly family-friendly, and I have been there with my kids on many occasions, it is an outstanding destination for couples.

So in this post, we’ll explore the beauty of Costa Rica and what makes it so special. We will answer all of the top travel-related questions and really get to the heart of why you need to visit.

Specifically, will look at the best places to stay in Costa Rica for couples. Places that will allow you to enjoy all of the beauty and amenities Costa Rica has to offer.

But places that will really let you connect with your spouse or partner and get back to the heart of what really matters.

Make sure to check out my Costa Rica Couples Travel Resource List with links to everything you need!

What is the best area in Costa Rica to stay?

Bear in mind anytime we use the word best, it’s subjective. ALL of Costa Rica is beautiful. Friendly people are everywhere and wildlife is abundant.

That being said, what’s most important to you?

  • Kid-friendly?
  • Travel time from the airport?
  • Beaches?
  • Mountains?
  • Wildlife?

For me, I prefer the state of Guanacaste which is northern and on the Pacific side. It’s easy to get to from the Liberia airport.

I also don’t have the stress of trying to drive in San Jose, the Capital (think driving in NYC).

The Pacific side is also easier to get to than the Caribbean side. Plus I still get amazing beaches, volcanoes, wildlife galore and so much more.

Ready to dive deeper into why I love this area? Check out ALL the amazing Reasons to Visit Guanacaste Costa Rica in one of my recent articles! Just click that link to read it on my site.

Does Costa Rica have all-inclusive resorts?

Being one of the world’s most beautiful travel destinations, Costa Rica, of course, has many of the top-name hotels and all-inclusive resorts.

Whether you’re looking for a top-notch hotel chain like the Westin, The Four Seasons or JW Marriott, you can find that in Costa Rica.

But the #1 ranked All-Inclusive resort in Costa Rica is Rio Perdido located in the jungle forests just a short drive from the Liberia airport.

  • Thermal rivers and hot springs
  • swimming pool
  • nearby zip-lining, mountain biking or hiking
  • wellness spa

Click the image to see more on why Rio Perdido is most certainly one of the best places to stay in Costa Rica for couples.

Where should I stay in Costa Rica to see wildlife?

Want to see macaws in the wild? In my 5 visits, I’ve only ever seen these magnificent creatures once, around the surfer beach called Jaco.

I’ve never seen a toucan there (in the wild).

Howler monkeys are abundant and I’ve seen them (and heard them) up and down the Pacific coast.  They travel in packs and live in the trees.  Bear in mind their howl is not unlike a lion’s roar and can travel up to 3 miles.

Let’s hear a howler monkey!

But if you’re observant, you can see all kinds of wildlife everywhere in Costa Rica. There are also some great places to do guided nature hikes and walks.

My daughter’s and I love hand-feeding the white-throated magpie jays that live in the northern-most part of the Guanacaste state.  Think blue jays with a black mohawk and a long parrot-like tail.

The locals think of them the way Americans think of pigeons, but we loved them anyway.

Not sure when to start planning your next vacation? Waiting too long can cost you more or cause you to rack up a lot on credit cards.

So I highly recommend you take a moment and review all the most crucial Summer Vacation Planning Steps. I lay them out in a simple timeline in one of my recent articles. Just click that link to read it on my site.

What is the best airport to fly to Costa Rica?

I love the Liberia airport. In fact, it’s the only airport I’ve ever flown into in my 5 visits to Costa Rica. While I have flown into the old one where they roll up some stairs to meet the plane, the current airport is modern.

It has everything a modern airport in the US has even down to a Quiznos.

The main reason I love it is that I can be at some of my favorite destinations within 1 hour (and many in close to 30 minutes). I also don’t have to hassle with driving in busy San Jose!

Plus, living in Texas, it’s only a 3-hour flight from Houston!

What part of Costa Rica has the best beaches?

Again, this will be highly subjective.

Also, bear in mind I haven’t been to the Caribbean side. That being said, for me, there’s no better beach than the Playa Conchal area on the Pacific coast in Guanacaste.

Don’t believe me? Here are 2 of my daughters playing in the sand there.

What is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

The beauty of Costa Rica is it is pretty much an average year-round temperature of about 79°, and great weather, even during the rainy season.

Of course, if you’re on the beach it may be a little hotter. In the rain-forest and you can expect much greater humidity. But generally speaking, it’s great weather all year.

The summer is considered the rainy season, so from about May to mid-November you can expect very brief afternoon showers.

But having said that, I’ve stayed there a week in July and seen almost no rain, so it’s hardly down-pouring the whole time. The so-called off-season can also get you much cheaper accommodations too!

Think you’re too broke to go on vacation?

Don’t say no until you check out my recent article on some proven ways to have a Great Vacation on a Budget! Just click that link to read it on my site.

So now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s review the . . .

17 Best Places to Stay in Costa Rica for Couples You Must See

To qualify for my list, hotels and resorts needed to have 5-star reviews with over 400 reviews. They also needed to have a pool, free WiFi and be focused more on couples and less on kids (that does not mean these are necessarily adults only though).

So this list is truly the best of the best places to stay in Costa Rica for couples.  These are also not in any particular order.

7 Crucial Steps to Plan a Vacation You Probably Didn’t Know

steps to plan a vacation Middle Class Dad Jeff Campbell reading the Systema Strikes book on the beach in Costa Rica

Looking for Steps to Plan a Vacation?

I think you’ll agree with me that our lives get complicated and busy.

We mean to save up for vacations and book them well in advance to get the best deals only to wait until the last minute anyway.

Where to go that isn’t already booked?  How to pay for everything??  Where can we go that won’t be super crowded??

But there’s a better way.

You don’t have to start a year in advance to have a great vacation, you just need a plan.

In this post, we’re diving deep into all the best tips and strategies for planning an amazing vacation.

Specifically, we’ll review the best steps to plan a vacation so you can truly relax, recharge and unwind.

steps to plan a vacation Middle Class Dad photoshopped guy multitasking and overwhelmed

Check out all my best travel resources and recommendations which can save you time and money on your next vacation!

The best time for summer vacation planning

Believe it or not, but to make your summer vacation the best ever, start your steps to plan a vacation at least 6 months ahead, if not more.

Not only are you more likely to ensure you get in where you want to go.  But you’ll also likely get better prices.

Airlines, hotels and rental car places love to charge the maximum rate when it’s last minute and they are close to capacity.

Booking early when they are unsure if they’ll sell out, is much more likely to get you the best deal out there.

Consumer expert Clark Howard recommends booking airfare about 120 days (4 months) in advance.  He has an excellent Travel & Planning guide, which is well worth checking out.

The busiest places for summer vacation to avoid

steps to plan a vacation Middle Class Dad extremely crowded summer beach

Some places may well be amazing, but when you go on vacation somewhere with 50,000 other people it can be anything but relaxing.

When you’re young, single and childless these places may be a lot of fun.  But for most of us middle class dads, we need something a bit more low key and family friendly.

Travel & Leisure has a list of America’s Most Crowded Beaches.  These should be at the top of the list to avoid if you’re looking for some nice downtime and RnR.

Places like:

  • Venice Beach, CA
  • Miami Beach, FL
  • Daytona Beach, FL
  • Waikiki Beach, HI

Moving beyond that list I would also add Cancún, Mexico, Nassau, Bahamas & Key West, FL.  Unless crowds, college kids drinking all night, noise and traffic are what you’re looking for; keep looking.

The best summer vacation spots no one goes to

TripAdvisor ranked what they call Destinations on the Rise.

Basically, these are somewhat unknown gems around the world that won’t be over-crowded during peak summer vacation times.

Take a look at some of these surprisingly affordable summer vacation destinations worthy of considering in your steps to plan a vacation!

In addition, I would also suggest some of the following spots which will be both more affordable and less crowded!

  1. New Orleans, LA
    • Yes it will be a bit steamy and on the warmer side
    • True, the crowds on Bourbon Street will be out to party
    • But there’s cemeteries, museums, ghost tours and food festivals galore!
  2. Vail, CO
    • Our RV broke down in Vail once and it became an unintended destination while we waited for repairs.  We ended up LOVING Vail.
    • Picture a quaint German-esque mountain town; delicious food, beautiful scenery and friendly people
    • Since it’s a ski destination in winter, summer is the off season (ie; inexpensive!)
    • Art, dance and jazz festivals happen during summer so there’s always something to do (and you’re less than 100 miles from Denver)
  3. Palm Springs, CA
    • Another favorite of ours from the years we attended the Coachella Music Festival
    • This will be a HOT time of year to visit (but it’s a dry swelter)
    • Swank mid-century modern stylings abound in this quaint and fun town
    • Think swimming, golf, good food and museums all for a killer price!

The worst days to travel on your summer vacation

One of the most crucial steps to plan a vacation is to know the right times to go!

Orbitz, the renown travel site, conducted a survey and they found the worst days to travel during the summer months.

  1. The last week of May
  2. The first week of June
  3. 4th of July weekend

In general they also found that, not surprisingly, the worst travel days of any week were Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Thus, if you can do it, try and leave and/or return on a Sunday or early in the week.

Crucial steps to plan a vacation for less!

Clark Howard says “My FIRST RULE OF TRAVEL: Find a great airfare deal or affordable destination — then figure out a reason to go there! Eventually you’ll see the world at a fraction of the normal price!”

Finding great deals is easy to do.  It just takes a little planning and patience.  Shopping around definitely pays off.

There are a million ways to book airfare, but I almost always use Travelocity and have for over a decade.

Vital steps to plan a vacation without debt!

If you’re like most people you have credit cards; probably a few of them.

You know what else most people have?  A lot of debt!  The average household in the US carries almost $10,000 in credit card debt according to creditcard.com.

I don’t know about you, but if I’m $10k in the hole and I just charged up another 4 grand for my family’s summer vacation, the last thing I’ll be able to do is relax.

Thus, at least in my household, the steps to plan a vacation definitely don’t include debt!

So is paying for a summer vacation impossible without credit cards?

steps to plan a vacation Middle Class Dad credit cards fanned out on a desk

Absolutely not!

As with anything else, it’s just a matter of doing the steps to plan a vacation correctly.  Summer is at the same place on the calendar every year.

You may already know where you want to go and how much that will cost.

And you probably also have a good idea of what your family usually spends on a nice vacation.  For my family, if we’re doing a really nice (for a middle class dad) vacation, that’s about $3,500 to $4,000.

So if you start saving in January and you have to have the money in full by July, that gives us 6 months to save up.  So we’re talking a little over $600/month to save between those 2 dates.

If that’s too much you have 2 options:

  1. Start saving earlier
  2. Downsize your summer vacation

Related: Paycheck to Paycheck – 7 ways to stop being broke!

One misnomer out there is that we somehow have to have a credit card to book hotels and rental cars.

My wife and I haven’t had a credit card in years (at least 5) and we’ve booked all kinds of stuff with just our debit card.

If one provider claims you have to have one, just move on to the next one; we’ve never had a problem.

How to connect as a family on a summer vacation

Let’s go back to my above comment about possibly downsizing your summer vacation for a moment.

What I mean is that while it’s great to go to Disneyland (really great for us!), a great summer vacation is about connection!

The best times my family has had weren’t necessarily tied to how much we were spending.

No; the best times we’ve had are when we truly connect.  When my wife and I connect as husband and wife.  Then when our daughters connect as sisters and us as parents.

You can connect ANYWHERE.  Connection doesn’t require being on the beach at the Caymans (although that doesn’t hurt either).  You just have to be present.  To listen; to focus.

A funny thing happens when we step away from our daily lives.

When we take a break from work and especially electronic devices and social media we begin to really connect with each other.

When we focus more on being with each other instead of tagging one another or just seeing them through an Instagram filter it becomes different.

My family’s favorite summer vacation spots

My family loves to travel.  We like the mountains.  But we also like the beach.  We love Disney theme parks!  So many places, so little time and money!

We’ve been to Disneyland (California) and Walt Disney World (Florida) twice each.  We spent this past Christmas in Santa Fe and the Christmas before that in Costa Rica.

I also love Yellowstone National Park

I first went there as a kid and vowed to return every 7 years.

For the most part, I’ve stuck to that although I am currently a little overdue.

I have been a total of 7 times.  I would love to go there in winter, but thus far all my trips have been in summer (although depending on where you are you could see snow in summer).

Yellowstone does get crowded, but it’s so large at almost 3,500 square miles, it’s easy to feel like you’re away from the crowds.

Plus most people just hang around Old Faithful despite the fact that the park has about 10,000 other thermal areas.

If we had to pick one place we could go, most likely it would be a tie between a Disney park and Costa Rica.

However, Costa Rica is where my wife and I would love to eventually move to.  I have been 5 times and with the exception of my youngest daughter, our family has been 4 times.

Costa Rica really has it all; mountains, beaches, jungles, abundant wildlife, friendly people, fresh food and clean water and air.

It is truly a tropical paradise and while it has certainly gained popularity in the past 15 or so years, it’s still surprisingly affordable.

If you are thinking, “I wonder if he’s posted about this before too”, you’d be correct.  So check out Why YOU Should Visit Costa Rica if that sounds appealing.

In truth, if you do your steps to plan a vacation right, you can go just about anywhere!

So what are my . . .

7 Crucial Steps to Plan a Vacation You Probably Didn’t Know?

1. PLAN EARLY

Ideally plan your summer vacation 6 months ahead of time (or more).  Figure out where to go and how much it will cost

2. BUDGET YOUR TRIP AND SAVE UP

Once you know where and when and how much, divide that by the number of months you have to pay and begin to save that amount each month.  Transfer to a savings account so it’s out of sight and out of reach!

3. AVOID USING CREDIT CARDS

You don’t need to add debt to have a great trip and when we charge it, it often doesn’t feel real.  But when you get the bill while lounging on the beach it becomes very real.  With a little planning, budgeting and maybe some household cutbacks, you can do it!

4. SHOP AROUND AND FIND THE BEST DEALS

Don’t just blindly go with the first site you visit or what a travel agent tells you.  Don’t get frozen by fear either, but check at least 3 sights for lodging, airfare and rental car before you buy.

5. AVOID TRAVELING ON THE BUSIEST DAYS

Traveling on the busiest days of the year adds time, frustration, increases the odds for missing connecting flights or getting bumped.  A summer vacation is supposed to be relaxing, right?  Skip the holiday weekends and fly Sunday to Sunday if you can.

6. STAY AWAY FROM THE DESTINATIONS EVERYONE ELSE IS GOING TO

If everyone and their dog is going to be in Playa del Carmen or Miami on the 4th of July, do yourself a favor and stay away.  If you’re young and childless maybe that sounds like a good time.  But for the rest of us looking to relax and connect with our family, those over-crowded destinations just make us feel less relaxed by the time we get home.

7. SEEK OUT SOME LESSER KNOWN GEMS

Along the same lines, seeking out places a little off the radar not only give you peace and quiet but also can save you money!  The best of both!  Plus you’ll get to explore destinations on your summer vacation that many others haven’t seen yet.

How to Replace Rotted Wood Around a Window – 11 Simple Steps

how-to-replace-rotted-wood-around-window-rotted-windows-with-shutters-middle-class-dad

I love old houses. But older homes with wooden windows often end up rotting. So I wondered how to replace rotted wood around a window.

To replace rotted wood around a window fill any small chips or gaps in the wood with epoxy wood filler. Sand and paint and you’re done. However, for bigger problems, you’ll need to remove the sashes and frames and cut out and replace any large rotted pieces of wood.

Luckily with just a little bit of time & skill, along with a rotted wood repair kit, you can have your wooden windows looking great again in no time!

So let’s learn how to replace rotted wood around a window.

For DIYers, check out my Recommended Tools page (click to see it now on my site). I know my page will save you both time and money, and I only list the best of the best either what I personally own or have used, or the top reviewed items on Amazon.

I also list the best, and oftentimes, that’s NOT the most expensive items too.

Co-authored with Alex Omelchenko, window repair expert over at Apex Window Werks.

But here are the . . .

11 Easy Steps on How to Replace Rotted Wood Around a Window

1. Discover the size of the problem

Before you can fix the problem, you need to know how big the problem is.

So before we get started learning how to replace rotted wood around a window, scrape away some paint to expose the wood. You can use a screwdriver or a small chisel to scrape away the rot.

If it’s only a small bit of rotted wood, your job is nearly done. Congratulations! You can move on to the next step. But if the damage is severe, you need to proceed to Step 3.

2. Fill the gaps using a rotted wood repair kit

Now that the rot has been cleared out, you can fill up the gaps.

An epoxy wood filler works magic for this purpose. Just mix it up according to the manufacturer’s instructions, jam it into the hole and smooth it out, and then let it dry until it’s cured.

Then you can sand it down and paint over it, and no one will ever know what lurks beneath the surface.

Want the highest-rated rotted wood repair kit available on Amazon Prime?

It’s the Abatron Wood Restoration Kit (click to see the current price on Amazon). It comes with everything you need; Liquid Wood, Wood Epoxy, an Applicator bottle, Putty knife, Measuring cup, and even a Mixing stick.

At 4.5 stars and well over 100 reviews, you know this will do the trick and make how to replace rotted wood around a window a breeze!

3. Prepare to do some carpentry

If you were lucky enough to get away with the easy fix above, your window repair job is nearly done.

On the other hand, if there is more rot than wood, your job is just starting.

Go to your garage or tool shed, and get out your woodworking tools. You’ll need a comfortable workbench, clamps, saws, drill press, wood glue, and plenty of carpentry and joining skill.

Easy enough, right? So, let’s get started.

4. Remove window sashes and frames

If your window sashes need to be repaired, you will have an easier time working on them if you remove them first and take them to your workbench.

Unlike the frame which goes around the outer edge of a window, the sash is the wood that holds the glass in place.

And if it’s the frame that’s the problem, you still need to remove the sashes to get them out of the way. You don’t want to break more things while you’re trying to fix other things, do you?

Then, remove the frame if that’s the thing that needs repairs.

It’s much easier to work at your workbench than to do the repairs in place.

If you need help check out how to remove an old window from the DIY Network.

5. Measure everything & Cut out the rotted sections

In this next how to replace rotted wood around a window step, you will hack everything to bits. That means that you need to measure everything before you start playing wood surgeon.

Spoiler alert: you will eventually need to reconstruct the dodgy sash or frame, so you need to know what dimensions you’re working with.

While you will be making the woodworking equivalent of Frankenstein’s monster, it still needs to fit. So just jot down all the dimensions on a piece of paper. If you find yourself removing lots of little pieces, taking pictures along the way won’t hurt either.

The only way to deal with sections that are beyond saving is to get rid of them. Cut your losses. Really. Just cut it out. Get out your favorite trusty saw, and get to work on that wood. But don’t go too crazy. You’re not the creep in a horror movie.

Keep the cuts neat and straight.

Your best saw for precise cuts in tight places?

A Reciprocating Saw, like the DEWALT DCS380B (click to check the current price on Amazon) is perfect!  And at almost 5 stars on Amazon Prime with almost 400 reviews, you know you’re getting a great saw!

6. Find suitable replacement wood

This may be the hardest step.

Ideally, you need wood that’s fairly similar to the original wood. That will be difficult if the original wood is really old because they don’t make it like they used to. Mother Nature, that is.

All the good, old trees that made the good wood are dead now. Just do your best, okay?

If you’ll be painting over it, it doesn’t matter that much, though.

7. Shape and join replacement wood

Now, with the good wood nicely trimmed, you can proceed to manufacture new sections to insert into the gaps.

If you are an experienced carpenter, you will obviously have the skill to join the old and new sections seamlessly. If not, and it’s a big job, you may need to find a good carpenter in your area to help.

After installing a new frame, make sure that the surrounding area is dry and clean since rotting is usually caused by mold which is growing on wood when the humidity level is too high.

To prevent this you might want to check the relative humidity in your house on a regular basis, also such devices as dehumidifiers might help you to keep mold and rot at bay

8. Prepare the surface for painting

Once the woodwork is done, you can step back and admire your handiwork. Beautiful, isn’t it?

Except that the inlaid sections are pretty obvious. No problem, though, since we’re going to hide it all under a new coat of paint.

So, get out your sandpaper, and sand away until everything is nice and smooth.

Also, another common problem with windows is moisture that gets trapped between double pane windows. If you need help, we also have a great post on How To Do Double Pane Window Fogging Repair (click to read on my site).

9. Paint the wood

Now we get to the fun part; painting.

Actually, all of it is fun if that’s your kind of thing. Here you have an opportunity to prevent future rotting by choosing an appropriate paint. Choose durable paint made for outdoor use.

This will ensure that it stands up to weather abuse for many years to come. For exterior avoid using oil-based paints that can lead to mildew and yellow over time.

10. Replace the sashes

Speaking of weather damage, without windows the weather will damage the inside of your house unless you keep it out.

So obviously you need to reinstall your windows.

This is also a good opportunity to do some maintenance on your sashes to keep them gliding smoothly, remove rattles, and make sure they stay up.

11. Remember the maintenance

At long last, your windows are beautiful again.

And since learning how to replace rotted wood around a window was such hard work, you probably don’t want to do it again too soon. Unless you want to turn your skills into an extra weekend job, of course.

If not, just remember to keep up the maintenance. Inspect your windows every season, and do paint touch-ups before it’s too late. That little bit of effort will prevent a whole lot of effort — and money — later.

If you’re a DIY fan, why not check out some of the other great home repair posts on this site such as How to Build a Deck Step by Step (click to read it on my site).

Final Thoughts

In this post, we took an in-depth look into the world of wooden windows.

We looked at the how, why, and when wooden windows need minor repair and full-on major repair. Sometimes windows just have to be replaced. But that’s a HUGE expense.

But for the average DIY person, there are some options beyond paying thousands to replace windows or hire a pro.

Thus, we explored how to repair a rotted window frame. Then we walked you through step by step on everything you need to know about how to replace rotted wood around a window.

That way, you can not only learn a new skill, but you’re adding value and beauty to your home, saving your pocketbook (and utilities and comfort) in the process.

Find the Best Rated Cross Country Moving Companies in 2024

best rated cross country moving companies little baby in a moving box Middle Class Dad

Confused about how to find the best rated cross country moving companies?

Do you hate moving?  Would you do anything to find a better way to ensure a quick, painless move? How do you find the best rated cross country moving companies? How much will it cost? What happens if they break my things?

I feel your pain.  There’s nothing I loathe more than the actual process of moving.

Perhaps it’s just the fact that I’ve lived in over 20 houses in 9 cities in 5 states over the course of my life.  At any rate, inevitably we all have to move.

Finding the BEST moving company is the one thing that can mean the difference between a smooth move and a crazy, marriage-crushing horrible move.

Trust me; I’ve done both (and everything in between)

So if you’re moving within the same city, that’s obviously a lot easier.  You can make multiple trips, move fragile things yourself in your car, etc.

But whether you’re moving a mile, 500 miles or 3000 miles, there’s still a right way and a wrong way to go about finding the best rated cross country moving companies.

So in this post, we’re taking an in-depth look at all the steps you must take to find the best rated cross country moving companies. That way you can sleep a little easier knowing that dream of your next home doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

best rated cross country moving companies funny picture in Thailand of a very overloaded pickup truck with people hanging onto the back Middle Class Dad

Choosing the wrong moving company can:

  • Cost you time (delays happen, trucks break down and if your mover is using your truck for multiple families all kinds of delays can happen)
  • Cost you money (even if you buy insurance it typically goes by weight so for a lightweight valuable item the insurance is pretty well worthless)
  • Cost you items (items break or can go missing)

How do we get started finding the best rated cross country moving companies?

After all, if you just Google best moving company, you’ll see hundreds, if not thousands of options.

You can use Yelp to perhaps narrow your options.

However, since they are by city, you’ll only be seeing companies in your area. This can be good and bad.

For instance, a small local company may be great.

But if you’re moving cross country they may not be ideal. After all, you’ll be paying them to get their folks and their truck back home again.

Whereas a nationwide mover can schedule them to pick up someone else’s stuff in your destination city.

Generally, the larger the mover the more efficient and (sometimes) more cost-effective they can be.

The most crucial steps you should take in finding the best rated cross country moving companies:

  1. Check out the “super list” on MovingScam.com‘s website (it’s a state by state list of movers; the good, the bad and the ugly – don’t, however, just blindly go with their endorsed movers as these are just paid affiliate links and have to be vetted using the steps below like everyone else)
  2. Find 8 movers that look like contenders
  3. Check those 8 on their local city’s Yelp page (and even Facebook & Google+ too) and eliminate anyone with under 4 stars
  4. Check the remaining ones on the Better Business Bureau’s page.  With the BBB, while I would definitely eliminate anyone under a B rating, I look more at the number of complaints and specifically the type and whether they were resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.  After all the BBB solicits these companies to become members (ie: paying the BBB) so it’s entirely possible to have a company with an A rating that has hundreds of complaints.  Don’t like what you see?  Cross ’em off the list!
  5. Take the remaining names and verify them with the Department of Transportation.  You can search for them by their name or their DOT number which they are required to display on paperwork, websites, etc.  You can check for safety ratings and make sure their registration is up-to-date and that the number they show is genuine.
  6. Hopefully, you should at least have 3-5 folks remaining.  If not, go back to step one and keep looking.
  7. Recommendations – It also doesn’t hurt to get names from friends and co-workers of who they used, but I would still follow the above steps on them too.

Eliminating the terrible movers from your list:

Now that you have your best rated cross country moving companies narrowed down, we contact them and dig in a little.

I want you to ask them the following:

  • Ask them to come to your house and do an in-home written estimate (if they won’t do that, scratch ’em off the list – there’s simply no way to get an accurate estimate simply by asking over the phone how many bedrooms you have)
  • Get them to give you a “do not exceed” amount.  That means no matter what happens, they can’t charge you more than this amount
  • In that written estimate get both their “Full (Replacement)Value Protection” amount (higher) and the amount if you waive that extra coverage (we’ll get into that more below)
  • Ask them if they use the same crew to load AND unload the truck (if at least one of the crew isn’t the same on both ends of the trip, I’d consider not using them; after all, its nice to have that rapport/contact with someone and they know you and your stuff and it will make the unloading go all that much faster and smoother).  Also get a cell phone number for whoever is in charge of the truck so you can get updates or find out where they are.
  • Insist that once your items are on a truck they stay there until unloaded at your new house (if they won’t agree – ditch them.  Every time your stuff is moved the risk of damage is increased and you’d be amazed how many times companies change trucks and move loads).
  • Ask if your items will be on a truck that is shared with other families.  If your truck is shared, the risk of item mix up increases significantly.  I would likely pass on any company that does this.  Even if no mix-ups happen, to try and avoid confusion, some movers tag every item with a color-coded sticker.  Guess what?  They don’t peel them off at your new place (and yes I know many items will be in boxes, but stuff like furniture and TVs will generally just be wrapped).
  • Get an exact date and slim time window (4 hours max) for when they will be there to load your truck and an exact date of when they will arrive to unload.  Nothing is more frustrating than waiting for hours for them to show up to load or waiting days while sleeping in an empty house waiting for them to show up at your new place.

Narrowing the best rated cross country moving companies down to the top 3

What’s next? At this point, I would simply make a decision based on:

  • Price – who is cheapest (going off their “do not exceed” amount)
  • Did they guarantee all of the above questions?
  • Can they do it on the dates you need it to be done (bigger companies with hundreds of employees and dozens of trucks sometimes have greater flexibility than the little guys)

All things being equal, just go with the lowest price.

The painful truth about damage during a move

It doesn’t hurt to know your government protected rights.

Make sure to have a copy on your mobile device (can’t look anything up on a packed away computer) of the Department of Transportation’s guide “Consumer Rights and Responsibilities“.

You also need to know that before a single box is moved that, as mentioned briefly above, moving companies have 2 different insurance options in the case of damage.

The first is called Full (Replacement) Value Protection and generally will provide about $6.00 per pound (for the total weight of everything moved or insured) of coverage.

This guarantees that they have to repair, replace or give you the cash to replace items that are damaged (up to the total amount using the $6.00 formula).

For example, if you have a 3 bedroom house you could conceivably have 5000 pounds of stuff (or more).

Getting this full coverage gives you $30,000 in coverage (minus whatever deductible you select).

Sounds great, right?  It does until you consider the cost it adds to your move.

The other option is to waive this coverage in which case they pay you 60¢ per pound for the item damaged. Basically next to nothing for lightweight items that have a high value.

Before you go thinking or assuming that your current renters or homeowners insurance policy might cover damage in moving, think again.

In most cases, it does not cover damage from work done “for hire”.

I recommend passing on the full coverage the best rated cross country moving companies offer and finding a reputable 3rd party company to ensure your move.

Your own insurance may offer better coverage

If you have renters or homeowners insurance currently and you like (or at least haven’t had any problems with them) I would start with those companies/agents and ask about buying this coverage.

In just Googling for it, I would check any company’s reviews on the BBB site just like you did with movers.

Expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $200-$1000 for full coverage on your items.

Also know too, that like most other insurance, there will be a deductible (meaning the amount the damage has to exceed before you get anything).

Generally the higher the deductible the lower the cost to you.

Lastly, especially for any vintage, rare, collectible or antique items find out how they go about determining the value.

You don’t want to find out after your Great Grandmother’s priceless Tiffany lamp is destroyed that they require receipts for the original purchase (which you likely don’t have).

Too broke to hire the best rated cross country moving companies?

I’ve done the following for 2 of my moves.

We didn’t have the cash to spend thousands on a professional moving company. Thus we rented a truck from U-Haul or Budget.

Through them, you can find local people on both ends to help.  You pay them by the hour to load and unload and you drive the truck yourself.

U-Haul refers to this helpers program as Moving Help and Budget calls it Moving Staffers.

Aside from the ease and convenience of booking it online, you also quickly and easily see customer reviews on all of the choices as well as what their rates are.

Depending on how far you’re going, this can end up being well under $1,000 between truck, gas, and helpers. A local move where you return the truck to the same rental place is cheaper still.

Want to save even more?  Since you’re paying the helpers by the hour, the more you help, the faster it goes!

So What Are My . . .

15 Vital Steps to Find the Best Rated Cross Country Moving Companies?

  1. Go to movingscam.com’s “superlist” and look for movers
  2. Find 8 companies that look like good prospects
  3. Dig deep on those remaining with the BBB, Yelp, Facebook & Google+ to eliminate the stinkers
  4. Have them come out to your house and give a written estimate
  5. Get a “do not exceed” quote so you know the absolute max it will cost you
  6. Make absolutely sure your items will stay on the truck once loaded until arriving at your new place
  7. Verify the minimum number of people on the loading AND unloading crews.  The smaller the number the longer everything will take.  3 or 4 would be ideal for a large house
  8. Ideally, ensure that at least one of the loading crew will supervise the unloading
  9. Make sure you get a cell phone number for the crew chief or supervisor on your move – you don’t want to only have an office phone number which isn’t answered evenings and weekends when they don’t show up when they were supposed to
  10. Ensure that your truck is just for your stuff and not mixed up with other families’ stuff – you don’t want to end up with their old 1973 UHF TV instead of your brand new 50″ flat-screen!
  11. Don’t buy their expensive insurance.  Instead, see if your existing insurance company can add-on inexpensive moving coverage
  12. Understand that even with insurance, between deductibles and coverage by the pound, you aren’t likely to be 100% covered – expect to be out of pocket a little on any damage
  13. Also understand that even with expert packing and moving, chances are there will be at least a little damage anytime you move
  14. Get a guaranteed delivery date so you aren’t waiting for days in an empty house
  15. Expect to pay a deposit to guarantee the movers will be there on your EXACT date, but don’t pay in full until everything is in your new place and you are happy

Lastly, even with the best moving company on the planet & amazing movers, there are so many moving pieces that it’s entirely possible something will go wrong.

Also, make your move go as smooth as possible with my Free Moving Checklist.

This is where it pays to be a little flexible & a little relaxed. Understand that sometimes (most of the time) life is not 100% in our control!

Did you get great service from your moving company?

It’s always great to tip them individually in cash AFTER everything is in your new place to your satisfaction.  I recommend tipping about $40 each for a 1-day move. Or maybe up to $100 each for a multi-day move. If they were outstanding you could even pay more!

How to Get Rid of Dog Odor in Carpet: 13 Tips that Work!

how to get rid of dog odor in carpet brown and white puppy laying on a beige carpet

how to get rid of dog odor in carpet brown and white puppy laying on a beige carpet

I grew up with dogs and cats both and both had pretty terrible effects on our carpet. So once I got my own place, I knew I had to figure out how to get rid of dog odor in carpet.

Here’s what I figured out:

To get rid of dog odor in carpet, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. Scrub in with a brush and allow to sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming. For really tough odors you can also mix essential oils with baking soda or borax, sprinkle on, allow to sit overnight, and then vacuum.

Most people consider the breed, looks, and the size of a dog when deciding to get one.  Many think that these are things that matter most. In the midst of the excitement though, we almost always forget about pet hair, dander and how to keep our house from smelling like a kennel.

Besides that stinky dog odor, there is also accidents during potty training that leave their carpets smelling bad. Many pet owners have considered ripping up the carpet to escape that ammonia smell.

What home remedy gets dog smell out of carpet?

There are a number of home remedies that can work great on getting rid of pet odor in carpet.

For starters, try sprinkling baking soda down on the carpet. Using a scrub brush you can scrub in the baking soda, which is a natural odor neutralizer.

For really tough pet odors, adding a little essential oil to baking soda or borax and sprinkling and scrubbing works great too. In the case of really bad odors, try leaving overnight before vacuuming too.

But one of the best home remedies for getting rid of pet odor in carpet is vinegar, so let’s dig into exactly how to do that.

How does vinegar get rid of pet odor in carpet?

Despite the obvious urine-like smell that vinegar has, it’s actually a great odor neutralizer.

Start by mixing equal parts water and white vinegar, ideally in a spray bottle. We want to get the affected parts of the carpet wet with the vinegar solution, but not soaking.

Once you have given the smelly area a good spraying, using cloth or paper towels gently try and remove the excess water & vinegar.

Use a portable fan to blow directly on the wet carpet to dry it as fast as possible.

Once dry, go ahead and sprinkle baking soda on the areas and allow to sit for about 30 minutes. Vacuum the baking soda and you’re done!

Will professional carpet cleaning remove pet odors?

The short answer is yes; professional carpet cleaning companies do usually have the right tools and products to get rid of dog odor in carpet along with cat odor and stains too.

Personally, though, I would try all of the home methods first both due to the higher cost of hiring a pro and the fact that all of the home remedies we list out below are non-toxic and all-natural and many carpet cleaning companies may very well use harsh cleaners.

Does replacing carpet remove pet odor?

In short, it depends on how bad the odor is and what kind of floor is under the carpet.

In most cases, the carpet would be on top of foam insulation. Usually, if we’re talking about dog or cat urine, most of the urine would be soaked into the carpet and the pad.

But under the pad, you have a sub-floor.

That sub-floor could be a wood floor (fairly porous but possibly sealed which would minimize how much urine could soak in.) But it could be a concrete slab. Concrete us sometimes sealed, but if not, concrete if also surprisingly porous and some of the urine could have been absorbed into the concrete.

Lastly, you could just have a wood sub-floor of sheets of plywood.  That would not likely be sealed and would probably be the most porous of the types of sub-floor we’ve talked about.

If you do replace the carpet, you’ll most certainly want to replace the pad and it may be worth doing a deep clean or professional clean of your sub-floor.

But certainly, most of the dog odor problem will go away with removing the carpet and pad.

So let’s review the . . .

1. Vacuum frequently

Some dogs shed less, some more, but the fact is all of them are bound to leave their hair and dander on your carpet.

Vacuuming your carpets every day will prevent the hairs embedding in it and making it smell like your dog. If daily vacuuming seems excessive, do it at least three times a week.

2. Sprinkle baking soda

Baking soda is a great odor remover solution for how to get rid of dog odor in carpet. It also works wonders on that distinctive urine smell.

Sprinkle baking soda over the stain or the entire carpet and use a soft brush to work it into the carpet. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and for persistent smells leave it all night before vacuuming.

3. Mix essential oils with water

Fill the spray bottle with water and add in it a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

Mix the contents together and then spray it on a freshly vacuumed carpet. You can use this solution as often as you like but you might need something stronger to remove the urine smell.

4. Mix borax with essential oils

Buy a box of borax if you don’t already have it in your home and mix two cups of it with 24 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly so that borax soaks the essential oil and then sprinkle it on the carpet. Let the powder sit for 10 minutes before thoroughly vacuuming it. Not only is it a great solution for how to get rid of dog odor in carpet, but it will leave your house smelling great!

5. Urine odor remover

To remove urine odor from your carpet mix 5 oz of hydrogen peroxide, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and ½ of a tablespoon of dishwasher soap in a spraying bottle.

Apply the mixture to the urine stain and let it completely dry before vacuuming it off.

6. Mix white vinegar and baking soda

Put one cup of white vinegar, one cup of water, and two full tablespoons of baking soda into a spraying bottle and shake it. Spray the mixture on a carpet and let it sit for 5-6 minutes before wiping it with a wet cloth in order to remove any doggy odors.

7. Vinegar water solution

To make this carpet odor remover you will have to mix equal parts of water and vinegar into a spraying bottle.

Spray generous amounts of mixture and scrub it to give it a chance to penetrate the deeper layers of the carpet before vacuuming it with a wet vacuum cleaner.

8. Combine baking soda with hydrogen peroxide

In order to neutralize the smell of urine in the carpet, cover the stain with baking soda and let it sit. In the meantime, mix 5 ml of dishwashing liquid with 250 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a spraying bottle.

Spray the solution over the baking soda, scrub it in the carper and wait for it to completely dry before vacuuming it off.

9. Use vinegar

Vinegar is a great solution for how to get rid of dog odor in carpet and it will at the same time leave the carpet looking brighter and cleaner.

You can place vinegar in a carpet cleaner or simply pour it into a spray bottle and cover the entire carpet. It may take a few days for the smell of vinegar to exit your home, but when it does it will leave your carpet free of doggy odors.

10. Clean your carpet with vodka

A less expensive bottle of vodka is a great solution if you need to remove odor from your carpet since it kills bacteria and removes stains.

Use a spray bottle to apply vodka on a stain or the entire carpet and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. When the time is up, use a paper towel or a cloth to wipe away excess moisture.

11. Mix baking soda and ground spices

To deodorize your carpet and get rid of doggy odors you will have to mix ½ a cup of baking soda and ½ a cup of borax with a 1 tablespoon of the ground spice of your choosing.

Sprinkle the mixed ingredients together and leave them on the carpet for 30 minutes at least before vacuuming it away.

12. Try enzyme cleansers

These types of products contain enzymes that break off urine molecules and bacteria and neutralize the odor.

They are easily found in stores and you will have to soak the affected area of the carpet and let it sit for a while before wiping it away. In cases of persistent urine odor, you may have to repeat the process a couple of times in order to remove the smell completely.
